I have no idea what he means by that. I've never heard the word used outside of a historical context.
...should I just get him an Office 365 sub? Is that fine for whatever a manuscript is?

I don't know what the fuck a manuscript is, but Microsoft has had a chokehold on most document processing in every field except academic publishing (science/math particularly), so I would be surprised if Word wasn't The De Facto Standard for whatever he's doing.

I installed Ubuntu from a minimal ISO then installed xorg, lightdm and a DE
It seems pretty good so far, but are there any essential packages or config files I should manually take care of?
I had to edit the config file in /etc/networkmanager because network-manager wouldn't display my interfaces.

People say Akira is good, but I haven't seen it. However, Ghost in the Shell is very good in my opinion.
If anime isn't your thing, you could try Johnny Mnemonic, Total Recall, or The Matrix. The Terminator and Robocop series have some Cyberpunk influences as well. Basically, try stuff, like Blade Runner, as it's one of the most influential.

A used ThinkPad T420 with Debian serves me well for $200 off of eBay. I like it a lot more than my old MBP, but that's just me.
If you're going the MBP route, retina is worth it.

So I'm great with computers, work in IT and all that but this electrical stuff is just not making sense to me. This is why I'm not an engineer.
So I need to get about 17.4 metres (57") of led strips setup and with a wireless controller. I've found these cheap Chinese ones which look like they'll be good enough, but I don't get what kind of power I need for them.
I guess I just need to multiply the wattage by 4? That would be 240w and so I just get a 240w power supply? And what kind of wiring do I need to do to get this kind of supply working?
Will connecting 4 of these together even work in the first place and all be controllable by the one remote? Is there any other parts I'm missing? I'm completely out of my element here.

I tried changing it manually on my modem/router, but it sperged out on me and decided it didn't want to internet on that IP address so I switched it back.
