Personal info status: Stolen
Today my PC went off another time and when I restarted it sparked from one spot and smoked / smelled burnt.
I opened it and started to clean everything. Last time this happened there was dust on the VRMs. Note that my PC is very clean and the last cleanup was only a few months ago.
When I turned it on again it sparked again, I looked at the part, a 1x1mm electrical part on the backside of the card. I cleaned it with a lot of Isopropanol and removed the burned remains. It could have been dust as well.
I tried another time and my GPU still works, I played 2 hourse of BF3 and Warframe in 4K as usual. Should I be worried? It's a 2013 780Ti. I want to switch for a 980Ti soon, but it should be still worth 200 € as long as it works.

Hi there, due to security reasons I am interested in using Linux (possibly Ubuntu but I am open to other flavors) to partially avoid information bridges and other related problems. I am not that great with computers, I use them enough to feel trapped in OSX but not enough to know the answer to what I am asking.
Should I have both operational systems (Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu)? or does it open a security risk in the system (outside of me not using Linux when managing sensible information)?
What other good secure OPs are there?
Info about myself: I use my computer for mostly studying, reading documents, browsing pretty tame sites and GIMP, so a system that is compatible with most of other's computers would be nice.

Try this:
https://www.bunsenlabs.org/
It's pre installed minimal Debian. Like, literally baby's first Debian. Never use Ubuntu. Too much adware and bloated.
Install Gentoo

That's the only /g/ meme I know. But this is going to make me visit this place many times
so, a few months ago i graduated from votech and had no idea what type of project i should do for my portfolio, and tried to make something a little too advanced, and it ended up not working.
after a bit of a hiatus i think i finally realized i was trying to make something too complicated and decided to tone it down.
I wanted to know if my list of projects i'm planning on making are good enough for a portfolio, and if there were any projects you would recommend adding or removing from my list.
Calculator(possibly a scientific calculator if the first one works out)
music player(possibly a video player as well)
clock/timer
so far thats all i can think of that may only require one language.
i was thinking of doing a notification program that links to your email but I'm not sure if that requires any knowledge of sql, or javascript.

What the fuck is wrong with you
Hi I used to build custom computers for my living and there are some I reccomend under 150$
1.Phanteks Enthoo Pro if you can get it under 85$ It is just king of budget cases.Dislike the cheap plastic and barely any customizability.
2.Fractal Design Define XL R2 120$ It is quite old case, dislike the plastic door and no space for 2bottom and 3top ventillators, space in front is crowded too forcing you to make ugly cable-managment.
3.NZXT H630 100$ Dislike the lack of airflow because front is almost shut,so there is not enought air to take in
Can you beat any of these?Honestly I did not have my hands on many new-cases so things I reccomend can be out-dated by 2-4years
but from what I ve seen decent new cases are mostly in 200-450 range.
That'd be better spend on things that matter.
Also sorry /v but all the cases do not have to look like nvidia-transformer.
I also have one old computer with said nzxt 630,Is there some plan online to 3-d print so i can solve the air-flow problem?
I dislike the idea of just cutting it with saw.
I have a nzxt h440 which is a mid tower, but it's is similar to a h630 design wise. I haven't had any problems with airflow or temperatures and as long your not overclocking or something intense I'm sure you'll be fine.

I'm about to use the R5 of that Fractal Design Define in my next build. Love the design. Looking for under $100.
>>55808675
get a define s instead if ur not using a million hdds
Okay gentlemen.
First day on this board and the last day to update to windows 10 from 7 for free.
I've been reading articles of why it is a terrible idea to do the free upgrade but I feel that I'm going to miss out on an opportunity to save $100 for a new OS in the future
Can you guys tell me why I should or shouldn't upgrade my OS to windows 10?
do whatever the fuck you want, no one can tell you how you use a computer you fucking tool
Upgrade to Gentoo, the final OS upgrade.

Hey /g/. I've recently just rooted my S5 and have come across a ton of apps asking me to unlock my bootloader. I honestly have no idea what im doing and was hoping I could find some people here who are willing to explain the steps or link me to a video. My phone is a sprint samsung galaxy S5 SM-G900P model.
>>55808260
>a ton of apps asking me to unlock my bootloader
Smells suspicious, OP.
How about remove all the useless shit you have on your phone, install a decent ROM w/o bloatware and ignore those requests?
i have this piece of shit computer,
acer desktop,
i3-2120
nvidia 9600gt
1 tb HDD
4 gb ram.
shitty monitor, stock keyboard and mouse, small logitech speakers.
I would love to sell this machine for whatever it is worth, not totally sure what i could get for it.
Looking at building a new pc.... but need some funds first.
What should i ask for this damned thing?
just want to play pc games in general.
>>55808253
$10
>>55808275
yep, it is a piece of shit, but still, i am serious about selling it
It would make a good family computer i reckon.

Alright /g/ I'm a macfag retard and now my parents need me to choose them a laptop for $800.
Best laptop hardware and os for $800?

Acer Aspire V Nitro
i7 4720HQ (2.60 GHz)
8 GB Memory
1 TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 2 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
Will handle anything they are likely to throw at it plus if you need to co opt it for some light/moderate gaming you can.
Last model chinkpad. I think there are some macs that cheap.
Power supply recommendations?
I recently purchased a GTX 970 and my "750 watt" power supply can't handle it for some reason. I am now running 2 different PSUs, one taking care of cpu and mobo, other doing gpu and drives with the 970 at 50% power limit.
I was looking at the RMi 650 or 750.
The other supply is there too
>>55807915
I have a CM750 from corsair. Not modular but gets the job done.
>>55807931
I've heard bad things about the CM series and the 970.
The GPU basically kills itself when you boot a demanding game or play CS for a while. Suddenly shuts down with no signal to the monitor while the rest of the computer is still operational.
Can cheap thermal grease be used as adhesive?
Will it hold?
If not, what are some cheap alternatives? Double sided tape? Superglue?
>Will it hold?
No. Get some JB weld or Krazy glue. What are you trying to glue anyway?
Adhesive for what? There's shit specifically called thermal adhesive by the way.
Also, cheap paste is really, really shit. You want materials with a high heat conductivity and the cheap shit doesn't have them.
