Is there a Linux I can use that's closed source? Im opposed to open source software, I find it amateurish and insecure
>>55860255
>redhat
>>55860255
Back under your bridge there, OP.
>>55860255
You can't, license of Linux is written in a way that it will not allow it. When you copy it regardless you are infringing the license. You can call it something else and steal their code though. If it grows popular you'll eventually get caught but in your homebrewing scale you won't.

What is the advantage of UNIX-like filesystem hierarchy standard? Why is it my fate to go through millions of config files (or things created after the installation that are not tracked by the package manager) in /etc?
I kinda understand why people chose this way, but I don't think the people came up with it estimated the growth in complexity of third party applications.
What I would really love is having a base system set up in this fashion and additional stuff contained within themselves, and symlinked for compatibility. So that when I use my package manager, I can just check the base directory for invalid symlinks and it would be just fine.
>>55860181
It exists and is called Gobo Linux. find, grep, and man basically make it not worth the time.
>>55860203
Oh, didn't know that. It looks cool.
My issue is not really finding them, it's more about not being able to completely and confidently removing programs. Bits and pieces left everywhere that are not tracked by package manager which may also be named weirdly so you may not be able to find them using logic.
But I thought I was the only one got fed up with this. Apparently there are others and now my thread seems a bit pointless.
>>55860273
Problem is with the package not having certain files being tracked. In any case, I've had the same problems in Windows, with uninstallers leaving shit around. Visual Studio's uninstaller is complete crap.
freetards can only dream of having a professional filesystem such as NTFS, which supports instant search without the need of frequently building up databases with all files on your disk.
>>55860092
>which supports instant search without the need of frequently building up databases with all files on your disk.
Except Windows 7 search has to do exactly that. Without indexing enabled, it's utterly useless for actually finding files.
>>55860169
I didn't say that Windows doesn't index files for some reason (maybe to index its contents too).
But you can install a third-party tool like UltraSearch or Everywhere and have REAL TIME RESULTS without a database/indexing. It just works.
ext4 and other Loonix file systems will never have that because of their archaic "journaling" system.
>>55860190
NTFS is a journaling file system too
Right lads
You know on Saturday, HP had an issue with their website and they listed loads of stuff for cheap?
Well my order was accepted for £1.58.
Better update us OP.
Also, that seems to be an old Haswell-era laptop. Pretty sure they'd want to get rid of old stock.
>>55860055
Either way, I don't care.
It's essentially a free laptop
>>55860055
Who cares, it's literally a $2 laptop

So I'm looking at this 4K monitor, I have old Asus VS239 and it feels time to upgrade.
Are 4K monitors worth it?
I only play high end emulators and PC RPGs so driving the 4K shouldn't be too hard.

I don't understand how you can look at that retarded stand and think buying it would be a good idea.
what to study/books/advice if away from computer for extended time (months) with very little/no access to 'puter but want to into programming?
>best knowledge base w/out keyboard
>want to hit the ground running when resuming desk monkey
>how far can i get
You probably want access to a computer to learn programming at first. If you know a bit already just grab a book on architecture and design.
just read godel escher bach. SICP and purely functional data structures if you are imagining you'll actually retain information from something like that without having a computer to play with the ideas on.
>>55859883
>very little/no access to 'puter but want to into programming?
anon it would be best if you tried to learn something else
why not try getting better at math or physics? or try learning a new language?
I am not saying you NEED a computer to learn but it will be very hard to get better without a computer
where are you gonna be btw?
Can you bring you PC to the movies?
>>55859821
You can bring guns so I dont see why you cant bring PC
I do it all the time

Never had a laptop in my life, believe it or not. Been a solely desktop guy since I started computing in 2002.
Thinking about getting one for college. Primary usage would be note-taking, paper-writing, Netflix in the library in between classes, and the occasional casual video game on Steam.
I've been looking at the Asus Vivobook e403sa. Has a lot of great features and a 1920x1080 display, which is apparently rare for a budget laptop. This one runs $375. Pretty affordable.
I just got paid, and my folks mailed me a surprise check for my birthday. I don't flippantly spend money, however - I'm not a super wealthy guy, and I'm making my way through college. But I think it's high time I get myself a laptop. Plus, on my desktop that I assembled/built/whatever, I'm still running Windows 7 (which I love) but I wanna try Windows 10, honestly. My mother has a Windows 10 computer, and I kind of like it, honestly. Willing to give it a shot.
So, is the Asus Vivobook e403sa a good choice? Here's the Pros and Cons that I've managed to assemble after some basic research:
PROS
>full-HD (1920 x 1080)
>14-hour battery life
>Price, obviously
>Apparently, a wide-variety of ports.
>Pretty good performance capability
CONS
>Runs a little warm, according to some reviewers
>Display isn't as bright as it could be
>Some slight trackpad problems
>Shitty webcam
>Several reports of Space Bar disfunction
What do the experts at /g/ think?
Note taking on a laptop is way overrated. Vast majority of people who want to take a laptop to class for this reason end up screwing around on facebook or whatever instead.
Whipping out a pen and paper in a lecture means you mean fucking business. You're not doing shit other than taking notes. Even people who doodle still take notes.
You can try going digital and getting a stylus though.
>>55859837
Get a Surface Pro 4, take it back if you don't like it. OneNote is incredible, you'll probably like taking notes with it.
>>55859911
I've never gotten used to writing on tablet surfaces. Even signing my name on a device versus on paper is awkward.

I like Linux but there are certain things i would have to loose such as blizzard games and curse chat. wat do /b/ ?

Nothing of value will be lost, I assure you.
WoW ran on linux last i checked, and their new game heartstone is a very simple one as far as i know, it would probably run on browser does it not?
I dont know hat curse chat is but there are plenty chat clients on linux
