Simple question here...has anyone tried to install linux on a laptop with an i5 Skylake in it and/or an Nvidia 940m? Every time I try I get this waterfall of super fast text telling me something failed. Doesn't matter the build, it always happens. IF I can live boot and try to install from there, it begins to install and then shits the bed at some spot. I am convinced it's a hardware problem. Friend of mine is convinced I'm a fucking mongoloid.
skylake has been horrible with loonix, almost everyone uses older laptops now
>>55915175
So what happens when old laptops become too old and you can only get Skylake?
>>55915133
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Got fed up with Windows in general, i'm jumping to Linux distros once for all. Is Debian a good choice?
Prepare to be fed up with Linux + Systemd.
>>55915066
>Is Debian a good choice?
NO
the debian stable packages are ancient, which is cool if you're running it on a server and want it to stay mostly unchanged for several years anyways. the unstable packages are not just unstable but also incomplete and broken.
A good entry level distro would be *buntu or Mint if you want something ubuntulike, or fedora if you don't. Ask >>>/g/fglt though, they're friendly towards beginners and will tell you why my suggestion might be shit or not.
polite sage because this doesn't need an own thread.
actually all *buntus are based on debian and mint is based on ubuntu, but the latest mint and ubuntu versions work fine and if you are new to linux then get ubuntu or mint, it's just easy to handle and you don't have to install as many drivers as on raw debian.
Hey people of the internet.
So I have DDR3 4GB 1337MHz ram on my pc and I want to add 8GB more. Problem is that I can only get 1600MHz ram (not a single store in town has 1337MHz ram).
Here are my current specs:
ASUS P8H61-MX R2.0
Intel Pentium G2030
DDR3 4GB 1337MHz ram
ATI Radeon HD5770 1GB
>>55915065
What's your question?
>>55915078
Will it work?
1337MHz with 1600Mhz combined
>>55915088
yeah, whatever one will work just fine

Classic Theme Restorer.
Stop being a pleb.
>>55914831
Honestly I see no real reason to complain.
Once upon a time, some pajeet complained on mozilla's jira that he once closed all tabs by accident because "close tab" was too close to "close other tabs" and after disabling a setting that's enabled by default because his curry-stained fingers slipped.
And guess what Mozilla did, they made the warning always pop up regardless of settings unless you turned it off in about:config. The setting on the settings screen was still there, but wasn't functional and neither was the "warn me every time" checkbox on the popup itself.
Now that was a valid reason to get pissed at Mozilla. Not this petty shit.
>>55914923
I hate the warn when closing multiple tabs thing. Though I hear some people keep tens and maybe even hundreds of tabs open. I could never do that. I don't even like having 10 tabs open at once. Bookmarks exist for a reason.
>Microsoft requiring you get Windows 10 to use newer CPUs and DX12

Should I just kill myself?
Use Win 10 only for games.
Use Gentoo for everything else.
There you go, I fixed all your problems for you.
Google OS soon

The requirement of a newer os is intels fault, not microsofts. You can't just change the whole core w7 just to make it compatible with a skylake cpu.

Will never happen. Not only is it unenforceable as no system on earth could easily determine content you paid for or content used under fair use, but no tech company will agree to such a scheme.

Anyone here have this one? Stupid simple question:
Does this also convert the button pressure for the PS2 controller? I'm trying to set up my old PC to play PS2 games, and my 2 fav games(MGS2 and Ace combat 5) use the pressure sensitive face buttons, so i'll need a adapter that has that feature.

I had bought this about a year or so ago. It worked great when it did, but it broke after a few months
