So let's speculate /g/

Throughout modern history, most authors and thinkers have considered a future where men is ruled by machines a dystopian one, but would this be really the case? Men has always been ruled by men and, though human society did progress considerably, it's quite clear we'll reach a limit in how optimal men's administration of society and resources can be, if we already hadn't.

A machine, however, it's a much more efficient tool than human mind at making optimal decisions; plus, it won't be biased by the multitude of external factors human minds will always take into consideration when making choices. Moreover, a machine will never act in its own benefit, unless you consider the possibility of a sentient computer, which is very unlikely.

If human society could completely automate its own administration, the entire notion of ‘politics’ would likely become obsolete. Consider how much time would be invested in other fields and how society could improve from this.

But then why do we still fear a future where we are ruled by machines?

Can any programmers familiar with DX11/12 and OpenGL offer an educated guess as to why some games ported over to linux are so shit? Is it poor code quality, or is the OpenGL simply inadequate at supplying methods to achieve the same types of graphics found in DX11 native games?

Similarly, why do some linux games (that are likely made to be native OpenGL and thus run on both OS's) absolutely absurdly demolish the windows version?

Is it the same issue? Surely it can't be the driver issue, because opengl is OS-blind. It can run the sane or similarly on both...right?

Marines were never proud and the few, they were nuckledraggers who couldn't get a proper job, so hand 'em a gun and off to shoot some foreigners.

Back to the topic, games are built with DX in mind, with OpenGL as an afterthought, the market for linux games is tiny compared the windows market. Basically, no one makes games for OpenGL apart from id.
>>
>>55917435
Well I understand that, but that doesn't completely answer my question.

So if a game is built with DX11 in mind...I'm not familiar with programming. How much code can be ported? I can understand that if a game is built with DirectX in mind, and it implements some tough-to-change or unchangeable features that are not the proper khronos-recommended ways of doing things, performance will be hurt. However, if you're rebuilding a games graphics, wouldn't you be rebuilding most of the graphics rendering from scratch?

I'm just curious as to what the ratio of "bad code:Difference in philosophy" is. It just doesn't make sense to me that if you hire competent developers to port a game, the best you can achieve is half the fps.

Like with a console -> pc port (Skyrim is a great example), the PC experience is hampered as fuck (see: Atrocious stock UI), but the game itself is still capable of performing like a beast, taking full advantage of the hardware provided.
>>
>>55917591
>>55917435

Another example would be Batman: Arkham Knight, or whatever the shitty warner bros one from a year ago was.

The game did well on console, ported to PC, and it performed horribly. However, as we can tell by looking at performance now, the issue was not a difference in philosophy. Warner Bros (and whoever they hired to do the port) didn't initially give two flying fucks about code quality until the community demanded a quality port. And now, it performs very well (which is to say, it offers a high end experience, on high end cards, and scales well down the lineup of cards).

So if they can do it, surely that means that the DX->OGL ports are just poor code quality....right?

So here is a legitimate question, and I know it irks everyone when GPU/PC build shit pops up but I just want to pick your brains with this conflict I'm dealing with.

I'm finally upgrading after years of 15-20 FPS purgatory on a shitty rig. I do a lot, image and video processing to intensive gaming (Heavily modded Arma 3 and hopefully soon meme VR). It can't be done on this current build.

I've allocated about 1.5 to 2k GBP for this new build as I spend a lot of my personal and business time at the desk.

Anyway I've got a deadline to order the parts by and it's before the end of August so I can get my VAT back.

I've been sitting on my hands waiting for the new Nvidia 10XX line to plod along to maturity, eventually until reaching similar Ti status.

I've looked at the selection of 1080s now and it's in the stage of 'going full retard' if purchased. They are already overpriced and that's before supply and demand also adds on top.

I'm also of the opinion that throwing that kind of money at what the 1080 is providing now is unacceptable. I've no intentions of ever SLI'ing again so more reason to wait for the final stages of the series to produce the result we expect it to, a Ti.

So having considered that I need something by the end of the month I don't have any time left to wait. That's where my current dilemma is.

Am I better of getting a 980 Ti, which is by now reasonably priced, or something from the infant stages of the 10XX series?

It seems the 1060 GTX handles less performance wise than the 980 Ti, I'm not concerned with power efficiency or temps, just how much I can get out of it application wise. As I said the 1080 GTX is something I can afford but on principle don't want to endorse, and when the new cards eventually come along it will sting me.

I don't believe in 'pay the most = the best' but as someone who is guilty of wanting the most out of games with everything on max at 1440p, I'm always going to want the new card. Tactful purchasing has always been the best solution for me, I don't trade cards up or down, I buy the best of the series and stick with it for a few years until the next 'breakthrough'.

I was of that opinion and about to get a 980 Ti but as I waited for prices to dip the 10XX series came out and fucked my shit up.

I apologise for the wall of text, hopefully you can see where I am coming from. If not

Help me, /g/.
About to pull the trigger on a Fury nitro and can't find a good monitor with le freesync that isn't 144Hz. I'm probably just going to get this Asus one instead and be done with it.

What would you suggest?

With a fury nitro yes you do. The fury is not strong enough to keep a steady 60 fps on a normal 60 Hz vsync in most games out today. The future is even more of a wildcard.

non-144hz freesync usually has a 40hz-60hz range. And that where the R9 fury sits in most modern AAA titles on 1440p (40 to 60 fps).

I mean, it's not obligatory, you'll probably get a smooth 60 if you dial some setting down.

As for the monitor, you'll struggle to find a 60hz Freesync 1440p. Better just buy a 4k 60hz Freesync. That way you can play older titles at smooth 4k resolution at 40 to 60 fps (or even newer games like overwatch)

Personally, I'm not a fan of monitors bigger than 24 inch, It's too fucking big for a monitor. Unless you'll use a controller and sit 3 feet away,
For a normal pc gaming at a desk, 27-32 inch monitors means you'll literally have to turn your head to take some of the action in. It's fucking annoying it feels like you're watching a recording. Completely ruins the immersion.

Find something like the ASUS MG24UQ- 4K, IPS, 40-60 Hz Freesync. That PPI reaches retina levels from normal distance (look up what retina means if you think it's just a stupid apple meme). It also means that even at 1440p you won't need anti aliasing.

But that would mean you won't be playing at a monitor's native res all teh time, which can be shit for some badly coded games/new titles that don't have proper driver support. It's a fair compromise. With any other type of monitor you're not getting what you paid for.

Anyway you look at it you're going to have buyer's remorse. At least go all out and enjoy it.

I'll be receiving a Asus VG248QE (1 ms/144 Hz/1920x1080) as a birthday gift in some days. I'm going to pair it with a i5-6500 + GTX 750Ti for playing some old fps games at hopefully more than 100 fps. Honestly I can't imagine how smooth games will look, but I'm excited.
