So /g/, which codec would you prefer for video files, in which usecases and for which reasons?
h/x264
h/x265
mpeg4
theora
vp8/9
Arguments like
open standards > corporate patent-encumbered cuckoldry
image quality
file size
encoding and decoding cpu/gpu requirements
degree of support in various software and devices
are welcome
I just tried out x265 and it does seem to deliver on h265's promise of the same image quality at half the file size compared to h264, but h* and mpeg are maximum corporate licensing/royalty bullshit. Theora, vp*, etc seem like more interesting choices but also much less supported in general. I use ogg, opus and flac for audio too though and it works fine for me on my devices and software, so I suppose the same will be true for video codecs.
.wmv
VP9 because it's free
>>55947621
*vorbis, opus and flac
ogg is the container... mkv ftw btw
>>55947625
fuck off. Shitty image quality at twice the filesize and badly supported in most software. Wmv is the worst thing ever
>>55947604
cool shit
no one cares
Waiting for gpu prices to settle.
what should i upgrade 1st?
What do you guys think about this trade?
Basically a guy wants to trade me this

Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.
*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***
Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].
If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I'd probably have to say Ubuntu. With some wrangling I can still get it to work the way I want. They might make some poor design decisions, especially in Unity, but at least they don't make big, important mistakes like serving their .iso over plain HTTP or getting hacked into serving malware.
How often does /g/ replace their phone? I currently have an LG G3 but am considering getting a Nexus 5x instead, although I would prefer to wait for the next Nexus. My G3 is acting up, getting a bit slow and it's of course always nice to have new things...
When I bought my G3 about two years ago it cost me €500 and I guess I could get maybe €100 for it meaning a net loss of €200/year which is rather much in my opinion for an everyday item such as a phone.
It made me think, why not get "last gen" every year instead of current gen every other year? If we take the Nexus 5x as an example it launched for around €500 and now, a year later, it costs €250. I guess it would make more sense getting this now for €250 and then get the "new Nexus" in about a year for the same price.
What are your thoughts on the subject? How often do you replace your phones? I always buy mine without subscription because I prefer to pay the full ammount at once instead of spreading it over like two years.

Explain why the fuck you still don't know how to use vim.

I'm trying OP.
I've done the vimtutor like 5 times, but it's hard to git gud..
>>55947200
Vimtutor means nothing if you don't actually use vim to edit things.
Why should I use it instead of notepad++?

I'm looking at this game and feel so sad I will probably never be able to make some great algorithm like this, all because I don't have a degree in CS.
Is it possible to learn important parts of CS by yourself and actually be able to create something innovative? I've realized average jobs in software and web development are pretty boring and now I'd like to learn more academic things and make some cool shit.
I'm in a barely related degree, I've only had basic first year CS courses and high school level math and physics so I don't want to count that, while coding classes were focused on web development. Just saying because I'm not completely clueless but I'm missing a lot of knowledge.
>>55946974
>actually be able to create something innovative?
You can't be thought to have creative ideas, you have to come up with them yourself.
>>55946974
>I'm not completely clueless
I disagree Anon.
There is nothing stopping you from learning.
Why are you on an anime imageboard writing blogs about "is it possible to learn stuff?".
Maybe someone will have a more positive post to share with you. I just think your post was incredibly pointless. If there is some topic you want to learn about, then learn it. If you want to have a degree in CS, then get a degree. If you want a pep talk, then there are probably better places for that than /g/ (or 4chan).
Good luck.
The info is out there, anon. This is the motherfucking internet. Why can't you learn this stuff on your own without having to shell out for a comp sci degree?
The only things you need are research, a plan and dedication.

Hi. I want to learn programming and I thought Python would be a good start. Is pic related any good or just a meme?
I know a thing or two about programming (really just the basics tho) but I've never developed anything with a GUI.
Are u fuckin kiddin us?
>want learn /pr/
>downloading shitty app from goygle market
Do u even try read books and learn frameworks?
btw
>MEMyton
>>55946827
Books are shit imho. I've read blog posts from top notch programmers about how to get into programming and they all said to start programming right away, don't waste time with books. Trial and error is much more efficient than reading 20 paragraphs of introduction to hello world.
>>55946803
>I want to learn programming and I thought Python would be a good start. Is pic related any good or just a meme?
Everyone learns differently. There is no best way to get started.
Asking a bunch of people (on an anime imageboard) who don't know you what is the best way to learn python is a waste of time in my opinion.
I think watching videos is stupid. But some folks prefer that method. I also think installing some app is really dumb. But it might be perfect you someone like you.
The best way to start learning IMO:
1) Find a book or tutorial you like
2) Open a simple text editor (gedit, notepad++, textwrangler)
3) Open a terminal
4) Start programming
When you have issues, read the error. If you don't understand the error then use your favorite Internet search engine to find the answer.
You don't need to spend money. You don't need a fancy IDE. You don't need an app. You don't need to ask for *anyone's* opinion.
You just need to start.
>I've read blog posts from top notch programmers
Who cares what they think? Some beginners are going to do well with books. Others will do great with online tutorials/materials. Some do well with classes.
What the fuck does "top notch programmer" even mean?
>2016
