Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.
*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***
Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].
If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Hey /g/,
My computer has been making this really annoying vibration jiggling sound. It sounds like an abrasive ticking sound, which I first assumed that was coming from the fans.
So I cleaned out all fans in computers. Cleaned out the cooler and its fan, cleaned out my video card and its fan, and even cleaned out all of the case fans. However, the noise still persisted after I cleaned everything out.
I have this issue for about two years now, with the noise subsiding every few months or so. I am beginning to suspect it might be my case. What do you guys think?
Pic related, it is the case I have.

It could be you hard drive. HDDs are mechanical so the mechanisms inside the drive could be at fault

If you don't have any SSDs, treat yourself and whilst you're not using your HDDs if the sound goes away that's the solution right there.
I fucking hate iPhones.
I just deleted 1GB worth of stuff on my phone because I kept getting the "not enough storage" notification. Guess what happened next. STILL NO FUCKING STORAGE. Seriously, what the fuck? What the fuck is this shit Apple?
If it weren't for groupchat messaging, I wouldn't have this garbage of a phone. I wish I still had an android.
I totally don't understand why people use iPhone. You literally cannot do anything on this phone except pay apple more money for stuff.
>>55968139
because android is trash
>>55966968
Don't ever buy anything from Apple, it's made to be fancy and uncomplicated but it's really restrictive. Their phones won't even last for a single year because some part breaks or it goes from 100% charge to off in a minute, it's literally engineered to break somehow so you have to spend a shitload of money on their next model. Other phones are cheaper, longer-lasting and have shit like SD slots.

Does anyone have an image of a dank looking linux setup that I can try out? I'm interested in hooking up my E6400 with the comfiest, most aesthetic looking OS possible. Tiling window managers, etc.
If not, what distribution and packages did you use to get your comfy setup?

No reporting your location info to third party servers is totally a-ok and can't be used in any way to compromise you.
Are you retarded?
Why are you even asking? You know the answer.

On a global scale
Alright /g/, FizzBuzz time!
"Write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 100. But for multiples of three print “Fizz” instead of the number and for the multiples of five print “Buzz”. For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print “FizzBuzz”."
Use your language of choice - extra points for obscure ones.
To start it off I give you Self.x: 0.
[x < 100] whileTrue: [
x: x + 1.
((x % 3) = 0) ifTrue: ['Fizz' print].
((x % 5) = 0) ifTrue: ['Buzz' print].
(((x % 3) != 0) && ((x % 5) != 0)) ifTrue: [x print].
'\n' print.
]
What is "fizzbuzz"?
>>55966867
In action. This assumes your object has a mutable slot named 'x' and prints into the terminal that runs Self VM.
>>55966922
The "Fizz-Buzz test" is an interview question designed to help filter out the 99.5% of programming job candidates who can't seem to program their way out of a wet paper bag. The question is included in OP.

>>55966906
It is like that out of the box, so it's a bug. Why should I have to fix their mundane mistakes with chmod myself? If I wanted to fix my OS, I'd use Arch.

I don't understand why people use these
Hello /g/uys, I'm wondering if gpu clock rate really matters?
I'm building a new rig, and all that's left to get for me is a gpu.. I'm going to be using a 900p (1600x900) monitor, and I heard that 2gb is good for that res, but I'm unsure if I should consider core / memory clock also? When ever people review gpu's, they tend to focus on everything but the clock rates...
>>55966746
i dont think they matter op. gpu clock rate isn't as important as, say cpu clock rate. but to be safe, i would go with something > 600mhz
>>55966746
When it comes to GPU performance, # of Shader cores is most important, followed by Memory Bandwidth (GB/s) and Buffer Size (VRAM).
This doesn't mean however that a AMD card with higher specs on paper will perform better than a Nvidia card at a similar price point.
You can only compare # of shader cores on a 1:1 ratio when you compare GPUs of the same architecture (GCN 1.0/1.1/1.2/1.3, Maxwell/Pascal, etc)
Maxwell 2 shader cores perform roughly 30-40% faster in DX11 operations than GCN shader cores on average, so you could use math to compare the two uArchs using that formula in GFLOPS for DX11 in theory.
It matters only for when comparing the same GPU
Did you ever work online? What at? Did you get paid as much as you would irl?
>>55966700
beta testing can be lucrative. Takes time to get estbalished and a solid rep for being a reliable tester. Most companies though, require in house for so long before telecomutting is an option.
>>55967634
hurr durrr telecommuting
Online "jobs" are much more stressful.
What are you rockin' right now? What are you buying?
Just got an used 280x to replace my 760, only to realize what I run heavily favors Nvidia's design. Literally the same performance between the two, when the 280x should be able to surpass even the 960. Not only that, but also this specifically sends the amd's power consumption through the roof.
Oh well, fuck up to learn I guess. Shame really, wanted to try amd this time after 2 nvidias, but what I need it to do really doesn't do it any favors.
Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X. Special version that was not factory clocked to get it here faster during the coin mining epidemic of 2014. It was slightly cheaper but it does not overclock well (1120/1600). I would like a MSI RX 480 to sidegrade to until Vega. I know it sounds silly but I just fancy a change of GPU and want to see if I can burn past 1400Mhz using the new Afterburner when it arrives.
>>55966604
Running a 280x, and I still do not see a proper reason to upgrade.
>>55966692
Depends on the games you play I guess plus what your systems specs are overall. Rise of the Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3 brings my R9 290 (as described above) to it's knee's when maxed out. I hate having to turn shit down a notch or two to get playable fps. Plus overclocked it sounds like a fucking vacuum cleaner.
Will this kill Windows? Or does Microsoft have their hand too far up the developers asses?
>>55966577
second one
Make all the APIs you want, developers still won't port their shit to Linux. In the off chance they do port to Linux the port will be shit.
As it is it's too much fucking work.
What is a good setup for a cheap ass dedicated linux machine that I just use for basic bitch functions plus as a media centre?
List the parts you would use (with cost ideally for pure autism).
