Why is it always bullshit?
8 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Everything in movies is always bullshit, not just code
>>
because only autists pause the screen to examine them
>>
Because movies are meant to be over dramatic or impossible representations of our reap lives. If movies reflected real life then they'd become boring as fuck and nobody would want to see them.

This applies to chinese cartoons as well btw.

'Architect/Full stack developer' in Bay Area... How much should I ask for salary?

>Location:
Around San Jose, California

>Title:
Architect/Full stack developer at a medium subsidiary (less than 500 employees) of a very very large company.

>What it entices:
Architect + lead tech (full stack) + principal hacker. I'll be doing design and the majority of the implementation. I will be leading a small team as well. Will have someone junior to me as well. Probably will have to mentor him (kind of exciting). A lot of the people who work here are researchers, scientists, and low level developers (C++, parallel computing with CUDA, etc). I'll be expected to dig down on that as well. But, I will be the guy everyone comes to when it needs to work within a web application/service (and be scaled).

>Other details:
They have a big deadline coming up in a few months and they need to scale. Basically a web app that will be serviced out to various vendors and consumers. This will be my first project. All my feedback has been very positive during the interviews.

>Research so far:
Glassdoor. Indeed. Average seems to be 150K-160K.

>About me:
Graduated 2 years ago (with various internships and past experiences). Worked at a defense contractor doing software engineering. Left and joined a small consultant company where I started and finished many projects both by myself and in a team environment (five people total; two engineers). I can talk with customers, get requirements, etc. I try to learn as much as I can and keep an open mind about both old and new tech.

>Question:
How much should I ask for this position? I would go off Glassdoor and Indeed, but aren't architect roles typically separated from lead dev/tech roles (and this one is full stack)? Since it's kind of combined with a bunch of other responsibilities, maybe I could ask for more (and what about benefits/bonus/stock)? Or am I pressing my luck?

Thanks!

So, just about everything now comes with DRM, that's obvious, Biggest pain in the ass for me is transporting things through different formats. Almost becomes easier to just order a CD off of Amazon at this point. I used to have a PC setup on windows XP just so i could remove it, but that one bit the dirt last month.

I've been using Audials recently and that seems to be working well... downside it isn't exactly free. So, I've gotta ask... anyone know what's left of the once large options for removing drm?

I buy music with iTunes which is DRM free.
>inb4 muh lossless
If Apple ever introduces a lossless format in the store (more than likely) they will probably have an "upgrade" option much like when they transitioned to iTunes plus years ago. If it's not on iTunes, I use rutracker.
Also download movies through iTunes and have a separate PC with iTunes 10.7 on it so I can strip the movies of their DRM with Requiem. Being able to have a library where I can redownload all of this shit on a whin with all metadata intact is great conpared to when I used to just pirate everything and host it on my home server.
I don't bother removing DRM from games because Steam is great. GOG if I want DRM free games. Origin if necessary.

You know how I afford this shit? I have a job and I budget. Most people have the first one but have no idea how the fuck to budget. You can easily buy all the shit you want if you properly budget and have some patience.
>>
Don't particularly care for Itunes, just a personal thing. Haven't checked out rutracker. It's not a matter of not having a job, it's a matter of not wanting to pay for the same shit again because it has DRM.
>>
>>56032801
GOG for games
torrents for the rest

Can someone explain to me what open source actually means. I know it means you can read all the code, it's free it's there.

For example, I want to find all the code that ssh uses, like everything, from C code, assembly I don't fucking care. I want all of it. I want to know what compilers it uses how it calls them, what program communicates with what other program etc in order to achieve it's functionality. If open source is what it says it is I should be able to see it. I don't want to search the internet, I have my Unix-like OS here. I want to know.

Why is it so un-(user friendly) if open source is an important thing about it?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>56032793
it is usually very user-friendly. it's just not up in your face since most users aren't interested in the source code.

what distro are you using?
a lot of distros offer ways to download the source code through a package manager
on ArchLinux: abs
on Debian: apt-get source
on Gentoo: portage (the default)
on FreeBSD: ports
>>
Source code and a compiled binary are 2 separate things.
>>
>>56032848

I have installed ssh before. ssh client on one side, ssh server on the other and made it operational following a quick tutorial online. My question still remains. I have only configured it to work. I have not seen its internal workings. I know its complicated, it's connected with the internal workings with the OS and kernel and bla bla bla, but I want to see it. apt-get, yum install some packages somewhere on my file system. I don't know what that enables or anything, why it requires those libraries, why doesn't it work without those libraries. I'm just a sheep following some online Linux course.

How do I fully privacy proof Windows 10? And fuck no I will not install Gentoo. I need Windows 10 installed as I am a music producer and need proprietary software to run that I know Linux doesn't support, like the drivers necessary for my Akai MPC Renaissance to function with it's DAW. Yet I hate the concept of being spied on as I love downloading various VST plugins and music off file sharing sites.
