Is Chrome OS a great solution for making old laptops usable for seniors?
Currently visiting family out in the country, and aside from having a paid vacation around the mountains I typically get asked to do routine computer maintenance.
Would popping in a cheap ass 60GB SSD and throwing Chrome OS be the best solution for helping seniors with laptops? They do nothing more than browse the web, view pictures, watch youtube. Skype is still foreign to them but I see it is possible with some tweaking. Just curious if there's any drawbacks to using it on an old laptop.
Hey fuck you my grandfather went to MIT and learned javascript
>>56052458
That's the reason Chrome OS exists, OP
Since they are so fucking cheap too + it just werks for seniors that refuse to learn how to use a computer as well.
It's like a less expensive and easier Apple OS
>>56052582
K, just making sure there's no real drawbacks before I take the time to do this. I was considering slapping on linux but even that makes me nervous they will destroy it and call me up a week later. Best part is being in 4 hour time zone difference, so I get calls after I get home from work in the late hours of the night.
I'll give the most competent adult out there with a regular windows laptop in case they still have to do anything moderately serious.
I accidentally dropped my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge to a hard ground and it left a crack on the screen. The phone is still operational though and despite the cracks, the screen is still acceptably visible.
As I understand, it's impossible to fix the screen on these devices at this point in time. Would I be able to use it for at least another year in this shape?
Get a replacement by telling Samsung customer service their a bunch of lying fucks and that you're going to call the Better Business Bureau and file a lawsuit for false advertising
>buying samsung
i dont even feel bad
>>56052647
He made the right choice, it's the best android phone you can currently but unlike that pos the 6p
>>56052331
>not buying a case because you want to show it off

tiff image format
>how can I help?
mail your camera manufacturer and ask your distro to use it as default image format. complain at internet companies for not having TIFF graphics on their site. inform your congeressman of lack of TIFF on goverment information.
We can do this gentlemen! Never give up the hope!
Okay I'm going to sleep, after bump limit someone take charge.

No I'm here too
Hi

Which one /g/?
Thinkpad wins both hands down.

hmm...
>>56052283
What does the Thinkpad do that the other one doesn't? Don't tell me you actually use that stupid pointer stick.
I don't understand why this program segfaults:#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
typedef struct dString_struct{
int size;
char* data;
}dString;
void dString_init(dString** _string, int initSize){
dString* string = *_string;
string = (dString*) malloc(sizeof(dString));
string -> size = initSize;
string -> data = (char*) malloc(sizeof(char)*initSize);
}
void dString_delete(dString** _string){
dString* string = *_string;
free(string -> data);
free(string);
}
int main(){
dString* string;
/*
string = (dString*) malloc(sizeof(dString));
string -> size = 2;
string -> data = (char*) malloc(sizeof(char)*2);
free(string -> data);
free(string);*/
dString_init(&string, 2);
dString_delete(&string);
return 0;
}
The commented-out code does not segfault, btw.
Either I'm an idiot, or there is something seriously wrong with how free() works on Linux.
>>56052274
bump
pls help
string is defined in string.h, and you're using it as a variable name in both dString_init and dString_delete. I don't think it's causing the problem, but even if it somehow compiles and runs, it's exceedingly bad practice to use 'string' for a variable name.
Works fine on cpp.sh. Want me to reboot into Linux and try it?
>tfw you use mac at work all day and come home to your normal computer and can't copy and paste

Is this the feeling of retardation or...?
>working
leave
>>56052248
I should. I don't fit in anymore after I graduated and started working as a full time developer.
What's the best laptop and linux distribution for a developer machine? I need to be able to take it remote and to meetings from time to time, but will keep it docked to a monitor/keyboard when at home.

Hello /g/, /sci/ here.
Friend lost cell phone Monday, in a different state. It still rings today when you call it, which he says (from anecdotal evidence) means it's still on. It has irreplaceable pictures of his recently deceased dog on it, so he wants it.
Can Verizon (the carrier) track it if it's still on? Since it's presumably still in contact with a tower... right?
Is there any other way to track it down if he doesn't have the FindMyIphone app (or whatever its called) registered?
It's highly unlikely the carrier will do anything, friend is prob shit outa luck m8
Can verizon track the phone? Yes.
Will verizon help you get it back? No.
>>56051942
Which operating system has his phone?
Verizon won't help him to find it.
I'll keep it brief. I'm building a computer (finally). Will I need internet access to set it up initially or can I opt to activate my OS later?
>>56051812
you can activate later
How come garbage like this is allowed but no time for love isnt?

Thank you
Hi, i need a 200 dollars smarphone that has good battery and high rom. Display full hd if possible. I saw the Oukitel k6000 pro or the Wiko Fever 4g but i want other choices if possible. Thanks.

I think, that the only real solution for good workstations/development systems, on Linux, is Intel's HD graphics. Why?
Because Intel makes the drivers themself. The i915 Intel driver gets tested and developed inside Intel.
Radeon is a hack from suggestions from AMD/ATI. Nouveau is an even bigger, reverse engineered mess. And i've found situations where Intel's graphics outperform AMD/Nvidia graphics in GNOME/KDE for example.
What is your experience with this?
>>56051790
lol
Abandoning the Intel driver is actually encouraged in the Arch Wiki:
>Some recommend not installing the Intel driver, and instead falling back on the modesetting driver.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics
https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/4cojj9/it_is_probably_time_to_ditch_xf86videointel/
>>56051790
Every machine I've ever used with Intel graphics, the Linux drivers were poor. For example, streaking and tearing while watching HD video. In every case I've had to insert a NVidia graphics card to get good video on Linux.
I've never had an issue with IGPUS on Linux. Running OpenSUSE on the Surface Pro 3 is pretty much flawless besides the lack of multitouch with the typecover.
Is there a registry entry or something I can delete to stop this spam from showing up in my start menu?
>>56051619
>>56051619
>registry entry
no
>operating system
yes
>>56051619
Yes, you can remove web searches, store suggestions, and folders from your results. You can set the search pane to only search for installed programs, if you want to.
My computer gets pretty darn hot sometimes (sometimes over 70°C) and I wanted to know how I can adjust the speed of my fan (which I notice is going at a very slow pace) via something like terminal?
Sudo speed fan up
>>56051544
How about you clean your fucking computer instead
>>56051544
Motherboard bios. Linux has no software.
Does using a two-prong power cord reduce a laptop's performance for games? I originally had a three-prong that broke before I bought Overwatch. Now I'm not sure if it would increase my fps.
>>56051497
Depends on which prong is missing. Pics fag.
>>56051497
5/10 almost fell for it.

Is there any way to set up multi-users for a single PC?
As in let's say I have a computer with high end specs. Is it possible for one person to use the computer for video games or whatever and at the same time another person uses the computer to do whatever?
>>56051410
You need a mainframe
>>56051410
Linux is a true multi-user system that you describe. Concurrent users can be logged on and using the system at the same time. Using it for gaming may vary, however.
>>56051452
Is any flavor of linux good for this?
