What a bait, 8/10, nice job OP
Hey /g/
I'm a comp sci student. It's kind of a meme, but at least it's easy to get exposed to tech. Idc about school though. I want to know that my comms are secure and that my freedoms are not infringed upon.
I don't use Windows/MSFT bullshit. I run Ubuntu. But I feel like I don't know even half of what the average /g/ shitposter knows. Encryption, web sec, low-level languages, I want to know it all.
I know about algorithms, programming principles (oop), mostly useless. What books do I read? I want to know about old tech, old exploits that changed the world, key figures, everything from the start that brought tech to where it is today.
As a final goal I'd like to know how to use pic related to some extent. To have enough knowledge about interwebs and security in computing to be able to confidently use tails with proficiency.
I'm ready to down it all. Books preferred. Websites, manuals, biographies, courses, videos, audio, old or new, I need it.
When I'm done this I will write my own book, summarizing all I have learned, making it easier for others to do the same. Help me, please!

That's why you're stupid and behind

Do you even google?
asshole wasting my time
What caused the demise of the 90's hacking "scene," when clever teenagers could make international news by exploiting security holes? Now, the big "hackers" are teams of 30-something guys with advanced degrees working for nation-states.
>>56167041
Companies and governments saw hackers as attackers instead of allies helping to secure infrastructure. They passes laws which could ruin anybody's life if they ever got the attention of the powers that be. No even established researcher are safe from those laws once the powers that be choose to prosecute.
If a single teen could cause millions in damage you would expect companies to try their best to make sure they don't do it again . The bottom line is money

There is a reason why vandalism is a minor misdemeanor with community service slapped on, but website defacement (which is just vandalising a website) is a federal crime. The powers that be are afraid of people who can do something they can't, in this case know how to use the sparkly picture box that delivers porn and allows them to buy useless shit.
Is Mac OS better for anything? I want to set up a hackintosh just because, but can't really think of much to do on it that I can't do or can't do as well on Windows or linux
I installed OSX as a virtual machine. I never found a reason to use it
The 'creative' meme is true. If you get heavy use out Adobe suites you'll find that macOS is incredible...
The most worthwhile points of macOS come from tight hardware integration, security, compatibility, and excellent customer service... all of which are tied to actually owning the hardware, something you won't get from a Hackintosh setup. It really does 'just work' and is perfect for software devs who don't want to waste time fiddling with an operating system. Again, you don't get that experience with a Hackintosh.
If you're building your own desktop and don't do a lot of graphic design, there's no advantage over Linux.

>I installed OSX as a virtual machine. I never found a reason to use it
Same for me with Windows.
As for Linux... Sheesh!

For fucks sake there's even a windows GUI tool to unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP. That means fastboot commands don't need to be issued from the command prompt anymore. There's no excuse.
>>56167453
>ROM
it's a Firmware you moron
Do you tape over the brand name on your laptop?
The acer-logo is so fucking horrible, but I'm not going to become a sheep and buy a Mac just for aesthetics. So maybe just tape over the brand name, and that way I have an incognito laptop...

No, thinkpad master race.

Amd starting with mid level and releasing flagship later really is worth it

w key in my Steelseries 6Gv2 suddenly died.
It was working completely fine and it just stopped, no spills or drops or anything.
warranty's already gone. Is there a way to fix it?
>>56166587
Actually had the same happen to mine, thankfully the oven trick worked and I was able to keep it going for another half a year or so
>>56166615
Oven trick? wasn't that a meme for dying gpus?
>>56166646
Not a meme, but you want like half the temperature for a keyboard obvs. The theory holds for all electronics really
What CAN'T an iPhone do that an Android can?
I've been using Android devices since the G1 and lately I've been thinking about switching to an iPhone. So what will I lose by doing so?

>"""universal""" serial bus
>>56166398
Your referring to the connector, and that's not even all of them.
Universal serial bus does use a universal communications protocol, so it is universal in that aspect.
>>56166446
this
>>56166446
yeah, a completely disfigured-abortion-tier ugly """universal""" communications protocol. You might as well shove a bunch of depreciated 1950's radio teletype protocols together and you'll still get something better than USB.

Although I don't quite like OpenBSD I came here to remind you of your place

Why is the OpenBSD FAQ so much smaller and so much more useless now? A lot of good information was cut out.
My new apartment supposedly has fiber optic internet, and when I try it on testmyspeed.net it said around 70mb/ps. But I'm downloading Titan Fall for some reason and its only getting 2.5. I'm confused.
>>56166358
70mbs is around 8 megabytes. Chances are a form of flow control is in effect at the apartment complex so everybody gets an even cut of the available bandwidth in times of high load.
Otherwise some jackass could be torrenting spider man 3 and eat up all the bandwidth.
is it your personal internet connection or are you sharing bandwidth with your neighbors?
Just because you can get up to a certain speed doesn't mean every server will provide content to you at that speed.
:^D
just moved into my dorm and found this
Why do normies do this shit
Maybe they use it for torrenting to bypass the firewall? I don't know.

Why do script kiddies use a GUI front end to nmap. Kill yourself faggot
>Zen gets hyped by AMD fags
>It will probably perform as well as an Ivy Bridge i5 CPU at best
AMD, if you don't deliver, like you haven't in the last 10+ years, it's over. You may as well cry to the court system and sue intel to try and salvage what's left of the CPU market.
I still won't buy Intel
>>56166281
i understand not everyone can afford heating in the slums of chicago
>>56166197
I'm hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst. I've never had an AMD CPU in any of the machines I've built (for the record, I've only been building them since I graduated from college back in 2010, so long after AMD's days of being the performance king) but I am rooting for Zen.
I'd love an 8-core CPU with similar performance to Intel's E-CPUs, and if they can sell that 8-core for the same price or less as Intel's 6-core E-CPU, there's a very good chance I'll be using it for my next desktop rebuild.
