I have to make little apps for my IT class using MIT's App Inventor. What are your thoughts on this kind of stuff /g/. I had to use Scratch as well in the class and from my experience it just doesn't feel like coding.

I did the exact same thing at UM-Flint. Had to go make some compass thing that used the accelerometer. (In Scratch we had to make a decimal->binary converter).

It's a weed class. It makes people who can't understand basic logic stop and say "Hey, maybe CS isn't the thing for me." Just power through it. Then you get to learn C++, and that's actually fun.

sup. Trying to write a script to organize files in a folder, haven't started but I want to see what I can come up with. Anyone know where I can get ahold of a ton a miscellaneous word docs? Or just random text files, anything? Links would be appreciated. This will be local only for me, so I'm doing it in PHP, which is my strong suit.

So Chrome crapped out on me. I've seen it happen to a lot of people and could never figure out the cause. I just restarted and now all pages and extensions immediately crash. Can't even get to settings. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted appdata folders, created new profiles, installed beta, installed canary. Same issue no matter what.

So I give up. What browser should I use? I use google services for everything (inb4 botnet) and it's really annoying setting up a new browser.

It seems like my only option at this point is reinstalling my OS (Windows 10) but I don't want to go through that hassle just for a web browser either. I've gotta play more overwatch before the summer games season ends!

Opera should be a good replacement because you can use Google Chrome addons there too

/g/, do you use any cloud services (bot-networks) and if so, what's your setup?

If I install Google Drive on my PC, does that mean I give up all privacy even for my local HD?

nope
>>
>>56184774
Just my Google account for shit like google keep and sharing files with drive
>>
Technically steam could be considered a botnet for some games as they periodically save your game progress in the cloud for use on other PCs.

Other than that, nope. I use Google services extensively as well as an Android phone. Still don't use Google drive. No reason, just never really needed too.

Clouds and service sharing over aren't terrible. Its just that people don't know how to separate their work and play. Before they know it, a company or service is now prevalent in every aspect of their lives. Whether that company be apple, Google, or MS.

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
