I'm trying to decide between getting a high-end 1440p 144hz g-sync monitor (pic related) and a GTX 1070,
or a non g-gync 1440p 144hz monitor and a GTX 1080. it would be for gaming. Is the g-sync worth it?
From what I've heard gsync isn't worth the money, but it's nice to have
>>56288987
so would it be more worth-while to get a GTX 1080 instead and get a lower end 1440p 144hz monitor that doesn't have gsync?
the monitor i'm considering that doesn't have g-sync does have freesync, but i wouldn't be able to make use of it. so it would act like a normal 1440p 144hz monitor instead
I fell for the Goy-sync meme and while it does look nice it's not something I'd pay 150$ extra again. One reason I got it was because there were no good Freesync alternatives in the 1440p 144Hz range. Even though both Asus and Acer do have the exact same monitors in both Goy- and Freesync I couldn't find a single one where I live for reasonable price.
Why is battery life on my laptop so much worse with Linux when compared to windows?
Is this the reason why iPhone gets same battery life as Android with a much smaller battery, since Android is based on Linux?

If technology frustrates you maybe you should go back to Africa, Jamal.
so i just graduated after 5 years with info systeming degree. some part IT/business degree that really works for consulting and project managing for tech shit, yada yada.
threw all my shit in storage, packed my backpack, did some scouting around in other countries, back at home hunting for a job, with about 2 weeks until i pick up a trade job so i have some income while i look for a job relevant to my degree.
i have shitty satellite right now, with nothing but a macbook air and a fuck ton of free time.
aside from lightweight programming (software isnt my thing. cant stand it), what are some IS projects i can pick up for the next few weeks to polish up what i learned and keep my edge? right now im losing my mind doing farm work and reading, and really just need to pick up some IS skills to make myself more marketable...
json, sql, .net, uml, all of this ive done before, but ive recently started to get into GIS, but idk what direction or respurces to use/go in to further myself in these. im basically strictly entry level at this point.
oh /g/, in all your wisdom, what do you suggest i do?
TL;DR
>>56288869
im trapped in a farmhouse with shitty internet and a lightweight computer with little processing pwoer. what are some IS projects i can pick up for the next few weeks to learn new skills and hone my current skills
that arent heavily programming related
and maybe relate to GIS

Thanks, any thoughts on the new ones that are supposed to come out soon?
Are driverless trains the future?
Will the manual trains be completely phased out on all railroads? Why? Why not?
And if so, when?
I personally don't think computers will be advanced enough to react and respond to dangerous situations or accidents for a long time.
>I personally don't think computers will be advanced enough to react and respond to dangerous situations or accidents for a long time.
They already are. It's just the cost of automatic systems and people's distrust in them that keeps fully automatic systems from being implemented.
>>56288743
>And if so, when?
As soon as we fucking destroy that fucking RMT. DLR is already driverless. There is literally no reason for trains to have drivers or people on stations saying okay take off now. Robots can do it all.
People prefer a human driver or at least a human oversee-er.
And it's completely reasonable.
Nobody want to die due to a stupid bag.
A few days ago, some anon did a thread about multi threading in vidya
>>56270190
Which in turn inspired me to do another thread on multi threading, except focusing on multi threaded Linux programs. The only ones I could find after some googling were some compression programs like xz and lbzip2.
So why is this such a badly developed area in Linux? Why don't all programs get some needed updating to come into the 21st multi core century? Its dumb that we have all these CPUs and they're just being wasted because of shit 90s code.
It's difficult to program for and one or 2 cpu threads is plenty for most things to run smoothly.
Don't forget that most people will only have 2 or 4 cpu threads, not everyone has an 8350 or i7
>>56288802
But the number of people who only have one thread is virtually nothing any more. I mean you would need a 2007 CPU to still have one thread. Not many people use their computer that long.
>>56288841
I just checked and its more like 2004 when the first dual cores were available

Can anyone please view the two builds I have here and give their opinions on which one is better. And yes, I realize that these are non-K CPUs but I won't be overclocking. The z170 is essentially for the higher RAM frequencies with very little price difference between the two. Sound card is in the first build because the mobo is shittier.
Thanks /g/.
