If oyu want a high end workstation, get a W520 or W530 although the **30 will go for a bit higher than your price range.
I'm trying to build a workstation that's primarily going to be used for video editing and I'm trying to keep within a budget of $2500 to $3000 max if at all possible. I've been debating the idea of getting a current generation hexa or octa core i7 or a similar xeon.
However, ebay is full of various v2 12 or 16 core xeons for under $300 or even a 22 core for $1k. How would those stack up performance wise to the current gen processors with half the cores? Would this be a viable option? Am I likely to have issues with buying used cpus?
>>56300168
The performance is very similar to modern parts of same core count. Also look out, those used processors might be engineering samples. Make sure you know what you're buying.
>>56300168
Use Passmark for score comparisons.
A lot of the Xeons are shit for the money, and a few are excellent. Keep in mind that the motherboards can be very expensive.
>>56300201
Most are engineering samples, although I've found a few that aren't. Should I definitely stay away from the ones marked ES?

Hi /g/ I've recently decided to get more serious about virtualization and am switching over to ESXi over VirtualBox. I have proper hardware, and have managed to get everything installed and all my machines created and cloned out successfully. I just have one hang up at the moment. When I was using VirtualBox I was using a combination of Bridged Adapters and Host Only Networking. Bridge to let me/ others RDP into them, and Host Only for applications on them to communicate with each other.
So far I have found how to recreate this same sort of setup in ESXi with one drawback. I do not know what is determining the IP/ Default Gateway/ Subnet of my machines in ESXi. I have created a virtual switch that these machines are attached to with no physical NIC. When I do this their host operating systems come up with IP addresses beginning with 169.254 and that seems to be causing other issues. My question is what populates these addresses and how can I specify an IP range to draw from? I'm thinking something like (pic related) where VirtualBox would just allow you to specify an IP range and assign out static addresses at the software level.
Is this even possible in ESXi? If not other recommendations are appreciated.

Wat...
I'm sure there may be a setting somwhere for the built in dhcp. But really?
So when you plop down a switch in the middle of the room, and plug a few computers in, you expect ip addresses?

Someone who I no longer have contact with for personal reasons gave me a 6s as a gift after it was no longer on their tmobile contract. My question is how can I unlock it to work with straight talk or another carrier seeing as I was not the owner of the plan it was on? Any way? And can I do it for free? If not, what is the cheapest option?
Give it back...

So I have never posted here but I use 4chan quite frequently, anyway.
I have a laptop and I busted my screen and can't use it, I have to use another screen plugged into it to actually use it.
My question is I want to install a version of Arch but was wondering first of all before I go any further will I be able to use another screen on linux natively or will i be shit out of luck and only be able to use my busted screen until I sort out some software?
pic semi-related.

Why do newer versions of Windows lack so much as an option to make it look and function like a previous version of Windows? Do they realise that they're missing out on hundreds of millions of customers by doing this?
And why does Microsft actively try to combat programs like Classic Shell, Aero Glass and the various UX Theme patchers in their updates? Don't they realise that's going to turn even more people away from Windows 10?
Jews
>>56299883
The codebase is very bloated and a lot of functionality is difficult for Rajesh to implement; he doesn't fully grasp the current operating system because so much legacy code is mixed in/ laid under the newer code, and no one bothers to remove redundancies or fix things properly, because it's Windows—people will use it regardless of anything.
>Do they realise that they're missing out on hundreds of millions of customers by doing this?
I'm sure you know that the only entities paying for Windows are businesses, and that if Microsoft hadn't given W10 away for an entire year that people would have just pirated it. They are making money off data selling now, presumably.
>And why does Microsft actively try to combat programs like Classic Shell, Aero Glass and the various UX Theme patchers in their updates?
Windows is fervently proprietary. The user should be allowed as little control as possible, is the policy, especially when it can interfere with money making. I doubt it's a pride thing.
>Don't they realise that's going to turn even more people away from Windows 10?
Upset people, yes. Turn them away, no. The normalfags browsing /g/ either use W10, W7, or have migrated to easy peasy GNU/Linux distros like Mint or Ubuntu. Most of them don't know better, the little rest have seen some sort of light. The general population, however, has no idea how operating systems work, what alternatives they have, or how to fend for themselves, so they are stuck with W10. They can't do shit about W10 except buy a Mac.

>And why does Microsft actively try to combat programs like Classic Shell, Aero Glass and the various UX Theme patchers in their updates?
I think the honest answer to this is to forcefully shove ads onto their consumers' screens in order to generate ad revenue.
I've decided to finally join the distro master race and install Gentoo. Right now I'm doing it in a VM so I can get the hang of things first, but I might replace Arch with it. What I want to know is what USE flags do you use and what does your make.conf look like?
How about you go spend some times with your sister/cousin you huge fucking nerd? Don't you think she misses you even a little bit?
