>"Hey anon I got this 2nd hand GTX960 a few days ago, it keeps overheating, can you help me out?"
>"Yeah, sure we can test it on my old PC if you'd like."
>"Thanks anon, really appreciate it"
>Installed latest drivers and shit.
>Placed the GPUand benchmarked, GPU goes from idle 59c to 86c on 50% load.
>A few seconds later the framerate goes to 1-4 FPS.
>"Dude, I think you got a defective card, where did you say you buy this again?"
>Well, was looking online and met up with this guy, I tested it in his place, seems okay before I left..."
>"Sorry to say man, but looks like you got fucked man, shit's broken, have you tried calling him, how much you paid?"
>"Got it for 200$, been days, not even a single reply... so there's no way to fix this then?"
>Nah, though it will be a good display on a case or something, I mean you still have the box and stuff right?
>"Can you buy it off my hand then?"
>"No man, I don't really have use for it."
>"Dude, just pay me 50$ and it's all yours"
>"Fine, at least it will look good as a display on the living room" hand him fifty
>"Thanks anon! I'll buy you a drink next time, at least i got something out of this."
>2 weeks later
>remember the GPU on my display case
>take off hsf and tear it apart because why not
>apparently the guy who sold it used some kind of shitty knockoff black grimy thermal paste that hardened pretty bad
>Clean it off and place my own paste
>Ran benchmarks at 47c easy
Having "gaymer" friends is pretty handy
You just jewed your friend out of 150 dollars because you told him it was defective. Wtf is wrong with you.
>>56305835
Hey fuck you Mark! You could have told me you fixed it you greedy son of a bitch. And you can forget about coming to the party on friday.
>>56305971
I actually thought it was defective, but then I remembered my GPU from the early GTX days and replaced the paste. Not my fault he spends too much time trying to be a gaymer.
Can someone explain the Windows 10 meme? Is it like some kind of nega reversed "install gentoo" meme, cuz it seems like objectively a piece of shit and to have no advantages over Windows 7 at all (unless you work for Microsoft or have the 12 games that work with DX12)
Aside from the fact that this board thinks Apple computers are good now and you have to question everything as a result of that what exactly is this meme about?
>>56305827
Using Windiws 10 is like voting for Obama, supporting ObamaCare, or believing in Global Warming. You did it. You realized you fucked up, badly. Now you can't admit you were wrong so now you invent convoluted rationalizations to justify yourself.

Programming and writing code are very different things.
Programming , rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty - a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.
It is a purely intellectual pursuit.
Writing code on th eother hand is what shitstained pajeets and you have in common. An activity on the intellectual level of a monkey which is to programming what brick laying is to civil engineering.
>>56305748
> tfw you ahve depressiona nd it makes programming more difficult, than it has any right to be
pic related, that's how I go about everything in my life.
If my friend didn't metaphorically drag me to therapy, I wouldn't even bother.

fucking gay faggot go back to /lgbt/
Ok so one of the benefits of FOSS is that it's not possible for devs to build in backdoors without the community noticing, right?
The thing is though that I don't download source code but packages already compiled by my distro's devs. So theoretically they could've altered the source code before compiling it.
Is the only way to be sure there are no backdoors in your OS/software built in by compiling everything yourself?

Yes
>Is the only way to be sure there are no backdoors in your OS/software built in by compiling everything yourself?
You can also check the signature. Open source projects generally sign their binaries with some hash, you could check that the binaries in the package you download match those hashes.
It's not 100% guaranteed, but you also don't have any guarantees that your compiler doesn't insert malicious code into what you compile. There's always a possibility to become more tinfoil than you already are.
>>56305684
what do they have to gain from putting backdoors in stuff?
the instant people found out, which would be easy, the devs would get fucked over
Your hardware isn't free.
Software runs on top of hardware.
Ergo free software alone does not make you free.
I want to turn blank areas a different color. Pic related, I'm not sure what it's called in English. Maybe it could be white instead, or something, I don't know. But this dull gray is pretty gross.
How would I go about changing that? I'm pretty new to Linux, but I'm willing to figure it out if you point me in the right direction.
www.google.com
>>56305676
Copy the gtk theme to ~/.themes/, rename it and start changing the colors in its gtkrc or gtk.css file. You'll soon find out what does what. Preinstalled themes are usually located in /usr /share/themes/ btw

What are your strategies to secure your password databases /g/?
I'm looking to finally start using a password manager, but securely backing up my db slightly worries me. Is keeping one backup on a secure external drive and one on a flash drive that I will carry on me at all times a sufficient strategy?
I don't have the luxury of something like a fireproof safe or something as my absolute backup strategy.
Also what about using my logins on my phone? Just regularly sync a copy of my db and use a kpx android port or something for that?
Also is a diceware password really alright for the master password? I know the wiki recommends it but I just want to ask if there any significant downsides before I commit.
>>56305361
Are you aware that lastpass solves all of those problems for you and is way more convenient?
Whatever extra risks you might come up with about storing encrypted copies on external servers, backing up only locally by yourself is way more risky. Because of fires, burglaries and whatnot, just like you yourself pointed out.
And yes, diceware is great. Have your master pw be at least over 25 chars long, and you may also spice up the diceword results by throwing in random characters and misspelling words.
>>56305361
>keepassx
>Copy/paste passwords

>>56305414
Doesn't Lastpass require a premium subscription for syncing? I know its $1 a month but the idea of leaving a long term paper trail isn't appealing to me.
>>56305450
So what then? Keepass? Or Lastpass like the other anon suggested?

ITT we list the drawbacks of IPv6:
- privacy suffers that everyone will get an unique IPv6 address
>>56305046
Privacy != anonymity
>IPv4
>You get an IP address for your router. It NATs the rest of the devices.
>IPv6
>You get a /64 for your router. It assigns unique globally routable IP within the /64 to the rest of the devices.
It's the same damn thing without the need to port forward or hole punch. And NAT is not, nor ever has been, a suitable replacement for a firewall, so if losing it hurts your security then you're already doing something horribly wrong.
Larger addresses does mean proportionally larger routing tables for some algorithms. You shouldn't ever notice the difference, but your ISP might.
>>56305046
higher ping due to more numbers in protocol
How the fuck are people still buying 16gb phones? How can you be able to afford an iPhone, yet still be poor enough to not be able to get a 64gb one at least?
Because most of us are not gay and buy Android phones. We mostly buy 16GB variants because they have something called a Micro SD slot which accept up to 2TB cards. Currently though, the biggest size is 256GB.

Hey /g/. I've got a bit of a puzzle that I'm hoping someone could help me with. If this thread doesn't belong here, feel free to ignore or redirect me.
See, I have T-mobile with a 10GB data plan and noticed something peculiar about how it works once I go above the data threshold. I went over the limit just a few days ago, but have noticed that some sites aren't limited by the throttle at all. In general, I have the expected 128kb/s download rate across the board, but here on 4chan of all places, I have standard unthrottled speeds. I'm not well-read on the technology behind how cellular data works, but I'm curious about why something like 4chan would slip through the cracks on a data throttle. I haven't found too many sites where the same thing happens, so it's hard to pinpoint a pattern. Any theories?
>>56304980
maybe bored sysadmin is fucking with people
Try it on a vpn perhaps and see
>>56304980
Are you sure it's not just that 4chan is one of the least bloated sites on the internet? On any device 4chan should be faster because there's way less to actually load comoared to bloated pieces of garbage like tumblr, facebook, and any news site on the internet
