/g/ I'm going to university for >compsci in a week and I'm not sure if I should get a new laptop.
I've had my HP Pavilion g6 for about five years, and when I got it at the time is was fairly expensive, however right now it's a piece of shit.
>Loud as fuck fan all the time
>Slow
>Battery doesn't charge so it's like a desktop
>Shuts off from overheating all the time
>20 minutes to start back up if it is turned off or accidentally unplugged
I'm not sure how a computer can have this happen after only five years. My old ass t42 even works better.
So should I buy a new laptop or is there a way to fix this? The worst part is I checked bestbuy.ca and there is a sale for a 500$ hp laptop but the specs are not even better than my current laptop which is pic related
Thanks /g/
Also I would be grateful for any laptop suggestions if I should buy a new one

This one seems good but I don't know a lot about computers like you guys

What's your budget, and (besides your compsci programming homework) what will you mostly be doing on it?
Also try /r/suggestalaptop.

>5 years
Honestly kind of makes sense, but you probably didn't give it a whole lot of maintenance over time.
1) Go onto Ebay and search for "HP Pavilion g6 battery"
2) Open it up and clear out all the dust and trash that's built up over 5 years
3) Replace HDD with SSD
If you're doing the whole "gayming on a laptop" thing, 5 years was pretty fucking good considering the abuse it went through. Hate recommending plebbit to people but the board mentioned here >>56409947 is good for your needs since they'll walk you through part of it, not so much here.
My auto insurance asked me if I'm interested in a thing where they use my cellphone (GPS and accelerometer I guess) to record my driving habits, so I can save on insurance. No, I didn't mean to post this on /o/.
Now, I wouldn't save any, considering I usually drive 10 to 20 kph above the speed, accelerate/brake harder than average, and rip through roundabouts/interchanges at my limit of grip. But I was thinking: if I disabled my phones GPS (so they can't get readings off of it), and altered the motion sensor (or whatever it's called) to read, say, 20% low than normal, maybe I could save a ton of money by doing that?
Would this be possible /g/entoomen?
>>56409808
Yes.
>>56409808
Yes.
Of course it is. You'll just need an Android phone with hardware level access. And a program that can change the calibration of the sensors. I assume they will use the gyro, and accelerometer. Gps spoofing is pretty easy there are a few apps for that. Sensor spoofing is hard though. And you'd probably have to make your own custom app since not every phone uses the same sensors.
Looking for a decent laptop that I can use for college with taking notes, programming, video editing and can handle modern games at 1920x1080 at medium or higher (although that isn't a dealbreaker). So far I've narrowed it down to these two laptops, thinking I'm leaning towards the 1 TB one because of space, but I'm open to suggestions as my budget is $800 or less and I want to use it for a couple of years.

You are not going to do any of the three former activities if you seriously considered something for "gayming". Fuck off.

There's a reason I'm not looking at laptops that have the word "gaming" in them. It's not a a huge priority but it's nice to have since I'm using it for school and for fun.
Thanks for the input

How can I get a new IP? I have a Xfinity combo router and modem.
>>56409562
You have to leave your internet off (modem unplugged) for a while and hope someone gets assigned your IP
it isn't easy unless you pay for the ability to switch IPs
>>56409593
How much does that cost?
Also I have tried unplugging it for 2 minutes or so and it didn't reset.
>>56409649
>2 minutes
Try 24 hours bub
What's stopping you from cracking open your laptop battery and replacing the Li-ion cells directly instead of buying an overpriced battery replacement (or cheap Chinese replacement that will die within a year)?
Your shoddy worksmanship exploding your balls off within a week
Lack of knowledge and skill
Lithium ion batteries are dangerous, they can actually explode and catch on fire if you fuck up. It's not as simple as connected a positive and negative wire onto it.

hey /g/ how important was your degree, if you have one, to obtaining your job?
Not important at all. I studied biochemistry but I worked at my university's helpdesk for 3 of the 4 years of my degree, doing basic IT shit. Graduated, landed jr sysadmin job, 65k/year.
I would not even be considered for the job otherwise.
For any kind of half-decent job you need to have a degree to even be a candidate.
I'm not talking about some amazing job, I'm talking about a basic job at an office.
Don't even think about it kiddo, get a degree.

I'm thinking about switching to physics and studying programming, and I already know a fuckton of it +2y in uni but can't be bothered to finish it
Also I'm getting this 2y programming course done this year so I will have a "degree". Not USA btw.
Thanks for the heads up tho
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for vidya games?
>>56409245
Yes, but you can always download more RAM if you need some.
>>56409257
Are you makign fun of me?
You need at least 64GB of RAM to run video games, and an extra 64GB per player for multiplayer games.
It's okay, because you can download extra RAM cheap these days and if you're careful you can even torrent extra RAM (they monitor people trying to download RAM, so be careful).

>>56409073
Depends on how much time you put into it.
