So, I just got 9 random PCs from the 90s-early 2000s
What should I do with them?

Bump thread. I just picked up my home server from my parents house. Been moved out for a while. Literally has not been touched for over a year. Dusted it out today. Will be fun to see how pacman takes it.
>>56413531
Here's the copypasta I used for the /hsg/'s I OP's.
/hsg/
What would you use a home server for? /g/ answer - Fuck you, you turbo autist! Simple answer - For whatever you want. From media to development to virtualization, options abound.
Power - Any server DDR2 based is going to be power hungry. Most multi-socket Intel DDR2 systems are FBDIMM based. Anything else is ECC. With DDR3 based units coming off 2nd lease, anything DDR2 should be avoided.
Plex - 1080p transcoding at 10MBPS requires a CPUMark score of ~2000 per stream. This is especially true with first generation i3/5/7 / DDR3 Xeons. The more recent the CPU, the more slack there is in this. For some reason, Plex doesn't seem to like low power options (Xeon 1220L, for example).
Virtualization - ESXi, KVM, Hyper-V, etc. ESXi is generally used by Linux heavy shops that aren't cloud centered. KVM is usually used in OpenStack. Hyper-V is for mostly Microsoft centric shops. These are all free, so use what you like.
Storage - Both ZFS and Storage Spaces pool. If you're going to use these options, do NOT configure the drive with a hardware RAID controller. Many options are available in general, such as FreeNAS, Nas4Free, OpenMediaVault, Windows Storage Server, Linux / Unix / BSD, etc. Some are free, some are not.
What should I get? A good starting point, if you don't want to build your own system, is an HP Proliant Micro G8, 8GB DDR3 ECC (Not Registered or RDIMM), 4 3.5" drives, and a 16GB micro SD card. Install OpenMediaVault on the SD card, and enjoy ZFS, Plex, and whatever else you want to try.
Where can I get things? Ebay is a good place to start. Used / refurbished gear is fine, provided that the seller is selling a large quantity of them. With drives especially, this is the case. The only real drive to avoid is the Seagate ES.2 1TB. These have faulty firmware and fail prematurely (Ask EMC).
My Unifi UAP-AC-Pro arrived earlier this week, it's been great fun playing with it and finally getting decent wireless coverage.
Just got my SG-2440 in today, and got rid of the piece of absolute trash that is the Asus RT-AC68U.

Hey guys, not entirely sure where to put this thread but fuck it lets try here...
Okay so basically I'm looking for a new laptop, nothing extremely fancy but I'm a bit of a retard when it comes to computer systems, particularly hard drives and shit.
Anyway
1. Yes, it has to be a laptop for college I'm bringing it to my classes
2. No I don't want a MacBook or anything Apple
3. My budget is capped at $1,500 USD
As for the details of the system, I'm not insanely picky but I want something with a good core processor, and definitely a nice graphics card. Despite needing this for school, I obviously game and need something better than my shitty old Intel that can't even run mine craft lmao.
I don't play huge storage-hoarding games, however I do want something that can efficiently multi-task and run steam and Java programs / games.
Tl;Dr: Budget of $1,500, need a laptop for school / gaming. Decent storage size, good processor, good graphics card.
Any thoughts please guys? Thank you :)
Bump again :(
You should use your shitty old laptop for schoolwork until the laptops with the Nvidia 10xx series come out. They're apparently supposed to be on-par with the desktop line and are your best bet for a gaming laptop.

ashamed that she's from my hometown
Wasn't Intel working on an x86 graphics card a few years ago?
Seeing APUs and their compute cores got me thinking.
What if Intel made a processor with no dedicated gpu or cpu, but instead had 12 x86 compute cores that could dynamically switch between a CPU or GPU.
Or at least manually be switched from some control panel in drivers?
>>56413384
do you have any idea how any of this works?
>>>/trash/
A Xeon Phi is not a graphics card.
This thread is dumb. You're dumb.
The actual fuck is this thread?
What is the best way you've found to circumvent Fortiguard in college wifi? Mostly I'm asking how the easiest way is to torrent through it, but I am also wondering how to do this for my browser. Can anyone give me the rundown on how to use Ultrasurf? Is it worth using or are there better alternatives? And I can't figure out how to configure UTorrent to use proxy without an Authentication. What are some good sites for free proxy servers in Socks 5 and HTTP?
I feel like I am being unclear but I hope someone understands, thanks /g/.
Not quite sure if this is what you want but a simple solution would be a VPN. Get PIA for $3/month and the firewall and cache won't know what's going through it because it encrypts traffic. This is affective for all your computer traffic. PIA is also logless so you won't get cease and desist letters.
>>56413235
Just pay for a VPN. Or use your parents network and an old laptop
>>56413515
Nah, but is there nothing free? I don't even care if it's slow as shit, I just want it to work.
Yes, we know everything already is from China but in here we discuss the no/low-name cheap shit you see on Gearbest, AliExpress, eBay and similar sites.

I wanna build a pc for my sister
She doesn't game but needs to render/edit videos and might do some light music production
Does she need a goyforce gpu or would a skylake/kabylake i7 gpu be enough?
>>56413176
Sounds like an APU wouldn't be a bad choice if she wants to save some money
Budget?
Get an I7 6850k and overclock it to about 5.7Ghz using the Corsair Corsair H100i liquid cooler and a few case radiators and then get dual GTX 1080s OR a single Titan X (pascal) and about 32gb minimum of DDR4 ram at atleast 4266mhz though 64gb is preferable. your motherboard should be something like an ROG Maximus VIII Hero Alpha to avoid VRM-chocking. Do all that and you should be good with some minor dips here and there when editing videos. should be able to handle some light-mid gaming too.
What does /g/ think of what I've done to your leader?
it would be better bait with Jobs face instead

One of my friends accidentally said "Richard Stalin". Thats how I got the idea.

You should email it to Stallman and see what he thinks of it.

ElementaryOS ISIS (formerly known as Loki) is going to be released in 5 days.
Are you excited, /g/? It's essentially Ubuntu LTS but cleaner (no Unity crap), and more beautiful (for example, look a this modern cursor theme: http://blog.elementary.io/post/110605449236/little-big-things).
>>56413071
They're unironically naming it ISIS?
>>56413084
Yes, the eOS team gives pretty much no fucks.
Well...fuck them then I guess.
Also Fuck Isis and that religion in general
How do I make this garbage box (Acer Aspire XC-704g) into something better? There's not a lot of room for upgrades, since it's so damn small. I'll gladly take any advice you /g/uys can give me other than something like "buy a better computer", don't have the funds atm.
>>56413068
Fuck at least post the full specs + how big is the case..
Looks like a Celeron Dual-Core (N3050)
Sorry Anon, you gonna just have to throw that paper weight away. That processor is the slowest Intel has to offer, and its embedded on the motherboard.
>>56413068
You know what? I googled that shit.
There is no point in trying to update that pc
Celeron Processor, Max 8GB of ram DDR3, Barely space for 1 or 2 HDDs, and the power supply is 65W ?! I dont even know how thats possible.
If you need an upgrade you have to buy a full new computer, i would say 500$ for entry range, 800-1000$ at least for medium/high end stuff.
Save and use PC part picker.
Coding Challenge, make an easy to use Tier List for sports, video games, etc.!
Go!
Do your own homework
>>56413030
I don't have any homework, I just wanted to see what people could come up with.
my_teams(string a, string b, string c){
cout << "Pizza Supreme Tier:" << endl << a << endl << b << endl << c;
}
your_favorite_team(string a){
cout << "Shit Tier:" << endl << a;
}
int main(){
string yourteam;
cin >> yourteam;
my_teams("The Saints", "Orioles", "Yankees");
your_favorite_team(yourteam);
return 0;
}
There you go.
Try to pick a laptop that does better in every category.
Pro tip: You can't.
(Note: I think the only good products Razer makes is their laptops, most of the other stuff is questionable at best.)
Considering the price and specs it's pretty good.
Only cons are the battery life is a bit worse than it's competitors.
I think the display bezels are a little big and it looks tacky, but that's subjective.
Still looks like gaming shit
Also gets hot and loud
>>56413042
Apparently the big bezels are are a result of the cooling... whatever that means.
But I agree, the only physical aspects I dislike about the system are very nit picky expect for the bezels.
