Are smart watches actually useful if you can pay for one, or are they just a meme?
>>56429194
It's like saying "hack me and my bridge between my phone and watch pls"
>>56429194
I think they're pretty useful.
First the obvious:
> I can glance at my wrist to view notifications without pulling out my phone.
> Tells the time and has a stopwatch.
And the following you can do by just raising and talking to your wrist
- set location aware reminders
("remind me to buy cheez-it's when I get to target")
- run search queries
("how much is a Tesla Model 3?")
- search for pictures
("show me pictures of dank memes")
- start a phone call
- start navigation and have turn by turn on your wrist
- check the forecast
- check stocks
- get calendar reminders
- see and respond to messages
- translate between languages
- acts as a flashlight (pretty handy at night)
- can try to emulate watch faces if you're into that sort of thing
- read emails
- other apps
Hopefully you get the idea. There's lots you can do. After having using them, it's just a lot of nice conveniences that can improve your day to day experiences.

What model do you use?
Newish to /g/, I'm fairly good with computers but not networking. I live in a Victorian house, brick walls about 9 inches thick so WiFi signal is not particularly good. I am looking to extend my wireless range throughout the flat but I want a SINGLE wireless network SSID that I can connect to throughout the entire flat.
If I went and got a second router, and I can connect it to my current one via an ethernet cable, how would I go about doing this?
I am basically looking for the kind of thing they have in large open areas like airports or offices where they have one network, but with loads of access points acting as repeaters.
Pic is basically my current setup.
>>56429131
Use the same encryption/SSID/password. Put them in the same subnet if you want it to be the same network(so 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 as router ips and above that use for DHCP)
It's easy.
>>56429131
>If I went and got a second router, and I can connect it to my current one via an ethernet cable, how would I go about doing this?
you dont even need to do this, though you will get better quality internet using wired connection.
You can just set the router up as a repeater, that will just rebroadcast your SSID and shit with the same signal.
>>56429131
I get my full 150Mbps when the signal is good on 5GHz but it drops quickly to maybe 50Mbps or even 10 if I am far enough away.
I use a Netgear D6400 and am willing to change should I need to.
Pic is the setup I want

i know some basic python from a cs101 course at my uni, and my class this semester on algos requires java.
the oracle documentation my profs told us to read isn't making much sense to me -- i think because it's too theoretical and ends up being dry as fuck. i'd rather be programming things and learning from my mistakes to discover all the tricks and shit that java has to offer.
Introduction to Java programming by Daniel Liang
What exactly do you and don't you understand?
If you know python, then learning Java if statements, loops, functions, whatever should be easy. The biggest difference to you would be that Java is always object oriented. Even the main function is an object.

more like object disoriented

I have a Crimson Trace LG-431 laser. I'd like to install a small forward facing white-light LED in addition to the laser. It seems that this is possible using the same pressure switch, battery and driver used for the laser/photodiode.
Right now, it seems plausible that I could install the LED in series or parallel with the laser diode, if the operating voltages are similar enough to get reliable operation.
However, I have poor intuition about such matters, and I understand that even minor and transiently exceeding the voltage and current limitations of diodes can damage them (to the point where a multi-meter could fry the device).
I've got the housing opened (pic related), and I'm ready to begin interrogating the circuit to figure out how much voltage I have to work with reaching the laser diode, and whether swapping out different cells will alter the voltage reaching the diode (starting by lowering available voltage from the battery compartment).
Does anyone with a better understanding of these topics have a better idea?
More technical specifications to follow.
Crimson Trace LG-431:
Battery:
Manufacturer Recommended:
1x 1/3N Lithium (3V, 11.6x10.8mm)
Or 2x 357 (SR44) Silver Oxide Battery (3V total, 11.6x5.4mm)
Possible alternatives to alter available voltage:
SR54: 11.6x3.1, 1.55V (4.65V Max)
SR55: 11.6x2.1, 1.55V (7.75V Max)
365/366,S16,608: 11.6x1.65, 1.55v (9.3V Max)
The sky is the limit for available voltage, but the device components have voltage and current limits.
Laser:
Output: ~5mW
Wavelength: ~650nM
Operating Voltage: Unknown, need to check.
Constant Voltage Driver: Unknown, need to check.
Switch:
Pressure Operated, connected to Laser housing via PCB ribbon. Not amenable to modification outside of housing.

When a computer starts to really run slow, what is the first part I should replace? CPU or SSD?
>>56428577
So you can't fix your computer without asking your personnel tech support forum, but you can tripfag just fine eh? Have a free sage.
>>56428577
Maybe try cleaning temp files first. Maybe reload the OS to take things further. If after doing all of that, maybe look at an SSD. If your processor is older than 4 years, then maybe look at upgrading. Also, having 8gb+ of RAM helps.
Try Ccleaner for starters.
I'm contemplating buying an Nvidia Shield Android TV, as that seems to be the premiere out-of-the-box media player right now, and for the considerable future, especially as it comes with a controller.
Any of you have any experiences with it? I'll primarily use it as a media center with Kodi, and playing PSX games emulated.
How well does RetroArch work?
Also, how well can you torrent with it? I'd like to be able to pop on RARBG, click a magnet link, then have it download to a memory stick, ready to be watched.
No one has any opinions on this piece of tech?
>>56428532
overpriced
you can do the exact same thing with a used thinkpad
I got one primarily because it's the only Android TV box with proper bitstreaming, 24p and horsepower for hi10p decoding.
Use SPMC, it's a Kodi fork better suited for Andoird.
Game Streaming works well enough for casual gaming. I was able to play the Shantae games without lag significantly impacting how I played.
I've had no problem with Retroarch.
I have a home server, so haven't torrented on it or used the Plex server functionality. I imagine it'd work fine?
They go on sale pretty much every other week. I was able to get a Shield TV + Extra controller for $120. The controller is kinda uncomfortable.
What is the best brand of television?
Foreign.

you'll never get a straight answer. read reviews, learn to spot the shills, maybe go to a few showrooms and ask for demos. samsung and sony seem to be popular, i personally have a sony

My motherboard died on my old computer
Looking for a middle of the road build, and got this from Logical Increments
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 BOM ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case
It all comes out to around $494.24 on newegg. How's it look?
I should be able to reuse my Corsair HX650w series as the power supply for this build right? PCparts builder says that this build should come to around 384w and 650w should be plenty.
Also, I forgot to get a wireless adapter on my previous build so I had to use a UBS wifi adapter. It seems to work pretty fine. Should I just stick with that or should I look into getting a more complex wifi adapter?
Is HIS a good brand?
Hey nigs, need a hand. I'm taking apart my brothers old PC to try and figure out what I can use for my new one. Most of the parts arrive on Tuesday.
I got the GPU out no problem, but the PSU, HDD and CD Drive are being pains in the ass. They each have a single screw that's fucking me over. It's as tight as a nuns arse.
I just sprayed them with WD40 and waited ten minutes, but not much is budging. Help?
