Why not? Hundreds of thousands of software engineerings have written and contributed to open source software projects over the years; most importantly, GNU/Linux.

What have the hardware engineers been doing?

We need open source hardware. Stop allowing us to get fucked over by the likes of Intel, Nvidia and HP (printers). The community can then crowd fund fab time.

Just do what you get paid for, but for free.

It's easy to install but not too easy to fix. Ubuntu is famous for adding their own "special touch" to things. I guess they sort of have to, to justify their existence as a commercial entity.

Sorry to bother /g/, but I'm a complete retard when it comes to stuff like this.

Can someone make a autohotkey script that attenuates all systems volume when I keep pressing a certain key?
For example, whenever I press a key to talk in team speak, I want all of my volume to be attenuated (including team speak volume) but back to normal when I stop pressing the push to talk key.

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experienceâ„¢

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Thinkpad X serious, stick loonuks on it. If you're really destitute the X200 is ~$60. Plus it doesn't have a trackpad, just nub, so you look like a l33t hacker.
It looks old as fuck, but it's circa 2008 and pretty damned powerful.

Debian's apt is famous for being one of the slowest package managers on Linux, and even it never takes hours and several reboots to take a system from a fresh install to fully updated.

Be quiet has been making new stuff and are trying to innovate.
Noctua has been doing the same thing over for ages.
Both are good but it's like trying to compare a bleeding edge distro to a stable one.
>>
I miss the old days when all the big heatsink companies just sold you a bare heatsink and you chose a fan for it yourself, based on your noise tolerance and performance needs.
>>
>>56684805
Gotta say I did feel incredibly dumb buying 3 noctua s12a fans for 50 bucks
>50 fucking bucks for FANS
That being said: they feel and look so damn high quality that I kinda rationalized it already. Also they're so quiet that my pc is literally silent at daytime and barely audible, except for the faint sound of air being pushed in and out at night
Tl;dr: Noctua is the real deal. It's like apple for cooling, ridiculously expensive, but not too expensive that you wouldn't be able to buy them. Good products afaikt.
