Welcome to /flt/ - Friendly Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with linux.

so what resources can I use to help me go from a beginner programmer to an intermediate one, in C#?

I did some books and I know all about control flow, class + object, method and function, etc. But I can't use this to code anything other than stupid string manipulation shit. Any help to actually get to code something useful?

Why aren't you building a Windows 98 machine based on a P4?

Apparently they are popular for that purpose as you can get 98 drivers for early P4 motherboards.

And you don't have to pay a premium for vintage hardware.

Just switched from Ubuntu 16.04 with KDE to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

The Good
Installation went well, UEFI secure boot and all.
Am enjoying the well working GUI applications (yay it being 2016) for everything.

The Bad
Global shortcuts + numpad still (since 2009) broken, workaround breaks normal numpad functionality.

Steam is broken with a workaround.

packet-radio-101.jpg

So I've got a packet radio question. Actually, I've got two: what the hell is it, and is my idea bat crap insane?

I've been reading up on packet radio systems, but I'm now more confused than when I started.

I started with the idea of "oh, cool, I can buy a few Raspberry Pi's, TNC-Pi's, and some BF9500's and make a packet radio network throughout town with the help of my friends so we can talk via text if there's no cell service".

Problem is, once I started diving into how packet radio works, I realized that the more I knew only made me realize how little I knew. It seems fairly niche in the amateur radio world. All I know at this point is, "computer sends info to magic box, magic box sends info to radio, radio sends packets to receiver over radio waves". Am I missing something?"

So: does anyone have a link to a "Packet Radio for Dummies" or something? A good 101 course or video? I just want to see how packet radio truly functions, what software is available for a TNC, and how I can harness it for a BBS or other live chat function using some of the inexpensive TNC modems available like the TNC-X, and its brother the TNC-Pi.

If I'm way over my head, please tell me, so I can figure out how to NOT be over my head.
