IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

A big thanks to the dude who answered my question on the eGPU (exp gdc) last thread. I did in fact have the expresscard setting to gen I so I guess that was not the concern Reason I had asked about the presence of dGPU was because the t420s BIOS has no way of addressing video changes bar a boot video selector (which seems wholesomely impertinent). Did you make any other changes in the BIOS other than the disabling of the network boot? Do you power on the exp gdc after POST?
>>
>>57008185
>Did you make any other changes in the BIOS other than the disabling of the network boot?
Nothing related to the eGPU as far as i remember.

>Do you power on the exp gdc after POST?
No i don't even touch the EXP GDC since it's inside a custom case i made for it. The EXP GDC along with the GPU and the PSU should turn on by itself when powering up the laptop.

KDE always looks great. It's a shame they never bother to go back and make all the pretty shit actually work 90% of the time. It's got more abandonware than google's special projects team.
>>
I am using KDE neon 5.8 (the upgrade from 5.7 broke the bootloader) I like it, but there are still a few bugs and it is a little to battery heavy for my laptop. I will never go back go gnome ever.
>>
I did use KDE.
Then I went to Windows because I realized that, while it's the only Linux DE I really like, it just breaks far too often.

http://gizmodo.com/mans-replacement-galaxy-note-7-catches-fire-samsung-ac-1787588341

>A third replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has caught fire in Kentucky earlier this week. Not only did the incident send the device’s owner to the hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. Someone at Samsung sent him a text that was apparently meant for a colleague: “I can try and slow him down if we think it will matter.”

>Michael Klering of Nicholasville, Kentucky told WKYT, the local CBS affiliate, that he woke up at 4am on Tuesday, and his room was filled with smoke. It was a recently replaced Galaxy Note 7, and it was burning. “The whole room just covered in smoke, smells awful. I look over and my phone is on fire,” Klering said. “It wasn’t plugged in. It wasn’t anything—it was just sitting there.”

>Later that day Klering began feeling extremely ill and went to the emergency room, WKYT reports. This is where the story gets grisly.

>“I was vomiting black so it was very scary,” Klerig said. “It was a lot of black stuff, and it didn’t look right.” Hospital records provided to WKYT showed that Klering was diagnosed with acute bronchitis.

The Note 7 is now a serious health risk. If you have this phone, replacement or not, return it.

Is there any chart which SSD's are the best and which to avoid like plague? Or rule of thumb is to go with Samsung EVO's and forget about everything else?
140 posts and 20 images submitted.
>>
Yea basically spend a few bucks more but get Samsung.
>>
dont want to hijack this thread but basically i am choosing SSD as well and have quite few choices. I am trying to get best bang for the buck. My choices:

Crucial MX300 275GB - 65€
SAMSUNG 850 EVO 250GB - 88€
ADATA SP550 240GB - 50€
ADATA SX900 128GB - 40€, used
Kingston Hyperx Fury 120GB - 30€

Space doesn't matter that much, could go for 240 or 120. Which of these SSD's would be the best for price/performance ratio?
>>
Been looking to get an SSD for a small 2011 netbook I've been restoring.
Is there that much of a noise reduction with them? Currently the netbook is pretty fucking loud with wirring and I'm fairly sure it's the HDD.

im not sure what headphones AREN'T made out of some cheap ass plastic shit, but my sennheisers plastic finally started cracking and breaking, and it made me very sad. now mind you this was after like 4 years of having them, they still work, i just had to tape and glue the cheapass plastic shit holding them together.

make sure to get ones with higher quality build quality if you want long lasting, if 4 years doesnt matter to you because you can buy new ones every year or whatever then thats cool, but i like my electronics to last. i still use a iphone 5 and a ipod with the click wheel thing lol.

It took ages to get a jailbreak on iOS 9 - And we still ended up with only a semi-jailbreak.

If you want freedom, go with Android.
>>
>>56986043
Always check /r/jailbreak and search on Twitter for jailbreak news. No, there is currently no public jailbreak available/announced by Pangu, TaiG, or other jailbreak teams. There are jailbreaks though made by security consultants such as qwertyoruiop and ih8sn0w on beta versions, but they do not release their jailbreaks.
