Looking for a new monitor on a budget.
Where can OP find the cheapest monitors on the net?
Budget rules out possibility of getting a gaming monitor with fast refresh rates + response time
I think IPS is a must over TN
24 inches seems like enough. Is 27 inches of screen overkill for a workstation?
Pic is OP's re-purposed 15.6" laptop screen on an adjustable height steel stand, cheap keyboard, razer mouse

me too. it must be frustrating for you as well. i know i felt overwhelmed with the lack of consumer choice as well as the bad positioning in big-box stores. it was a major hurdle in me giving a fuck.

Considering going midrange with Asus VG245H: 24" 1080p 75Hz 1ms TN-display
It comes with a wicked stand, nice matte finish
How much better is IPS display?
Hey guys, my brother (12) is going to High School next year and needs a laptop for studying, but he also wants it for daily use, mostly YouTube and probably some light gaming (Minecraft, steam games etc). My parents are looking at spending around $600 AUD, anything y'all can recommend?

well, updates can fuck you up. in some instances, really badly. this incident taught me a lesson though.
I had no fuckign idea torrent clients were advertising both the ipv4 and ipv6 IPs! my VPN was configured for ipv4 only and they don't even support ipv6. but torrent clients still find a way.
I just got a standard warning from the ISP telling me about copyright and shit. never got one of those before. was afraid that they were gonna sue me or something but after reading about it on forums, it seems they don't do shit to you.
still, this was fucking scary because I'm extremely careful what I torrent and how.
now I can finally get some sleep... for 2 nights I slept like shit worrying.

I got an MHL to HDMI adapter for my phone the other day so I could use my phone as an emulator to play PSX games on my TV. I got it and it works great, the issue is after a few minutes of playing, the HDMI plug that's hooked into the TV gets super fucking hot. The adapter I got is a cheap one from China I assume (This is the only one I could find that supports my phone's model number)
Anyone have any experience with this stuff and know if it's normal for the plug to heat up so much?
Pic related. It's the cord I bought

>>57109343
I have the same one, OP.
are you connecting the USB end of the MHL adapter into the USB port on the back of the TV, or a separate power adapter? of you have, then you might need to use water cooling, or install gentoo.
Ausfag here.
I have a question I'm hoping someone learned may be able to answer for me.
Basically I want to get a CPU cooler, and am tossing up between
-a cheap air cooled one ($24)
-an expensive air cooled one ($60-70ish)
-a base model pre-filled water cooler ($60-$70ish)
My computer:
-i7 6700 3.4ghz (4ghz "turbo boost")
-stock cooler
-ASUS H170-Pro (mobo)
-Strix GTX 980 ti (gpu)
-16gig ddr4 ram
-250gig SSD
-1gig HD
-a small wifi card
-700watt good quality power supply
Case is mid size, BARELY (and I mean barely) fits the video card.
Power supply fan at top-back and a smallish exhaust fan on case for exhaust,
Large side fan and side vents for intake. Case is probably the worst aspect of the cooling system desu,
I never plan to overclock, I just want to give the CPU the chance to use its automatic "turbo boost" whenever possible.
It will get to fairly high temps when playing games, and the fans become fairly audible, so I dont actually know what difference an aftermarket cooler would make, or which would be best, I dont really care about sound too much.
From a little research I get the impression the cheap water filled units are worse than an equivalent priced air cooled set up, and seeing as I'm not overclocking I wonder if even the cheapest air cooler would be fine?
OR
considering my small case, maybe a water cooled radiator drawing fresh ambient air would be really effective....
What do you peeps think?

>>57109338
>>57109322
are they a lot better than other air coolers? I can pick one up today for $49 AUD.
But is the extra 20 bucks a big difference over a very cheap one?
My Nexus 4 is becoming unusable.
The iPhone SE is probably too small, and the screen res isn't even 720p. Would feel like a downgrade in the display department.
Larger iPhones are too expensive. The 7's lack of a 3.5mm port feels genuinely user hostile.
But no Android hardware can compete with the A9 right now, never mind the A10. They also need gigantic batteries in order to last as long as tiny iThings can, so they take ages to charge and after the Note 7 fiasco I'm wary of carrying such huge high density chunks of lithium in my pocket.
Android itself is shit, and I say that as someone who's stuck with it since 2010. It's horribly inefficient. You need 3GiB RAM to compete with 1GiB iOS devices. The app ecosystem has given up entirely now. You only get guaranteed updates if you get a Google-blessed device, but this year they've gone full retard and decided to go up against Apple.
Fuuuuuck me. Every phone is either shit, obscenely expensive, or both. Part of me wants to give up and carry a dumb phone, but I've gotten too used to having a browser and maps in my pocket.
I don't even have a question.
At least you posted Maki. That's a positive
Do you just hate everything that isnt absolutely perfect? Whats even the point?
Cute maki OP! Phones are dumb and bad, I agree. I'd suggest going for the iPhone SE, and carrying a small laptop which it can act as a hot-spot for. Basically the only thing i use my iPhone for is maps, ebay notifications, and actual telephony. It works out very well~!
so I always keep the windows volume at 100% and manage it from my audio system.
but after coming back from 4 days vacation. I noticed that my audio is broken as fuck, it sounds awfully loud, to the point even if I set it from windows to 10% and my system to 0 (which is normally mute) it still sound like it was in 5%.
what the fuck can I do to fix this shit?
It can't be faulty audio system, shit is practically new. and I have not installed anything weird recently nor updated any software/hardware.
also the audio goes 100% from left and 1% right.
any ideas?
>>57109129
>audio goes 100% from left and 1% right.
It kinda sounds like your 3.5mm jack just isn't plugged all the way in, like one output channel is getting both input channels and the other is getting static.
>>57109807
I removed and plugged again all the connections.
gonna try again.
>>57109979
It's possible the connector is damaged or that you have a DOA audio system. Try connecting your earphones directly into the back and check the difference.

Is "double your ram" still the rule of thumb for swap partition sizes?

Because I'm not poor.
Who /DSP/ here? Made any plugins? I'm really liking JUCE for the build schemes to build AU/3, VST/3, etc all in one project.
The programming of DSP applications is different from your typical stuff. In DSP-land you are writing code that continuously samples an input stream, processes it, and returns it all in under 10ms. No threading, no locking, nothing. It all has to be done by hand, or you will get audio dropouts - meaning your application is useless.

What I mean is you are discretely sampling a continuous input stream
I've been wanting to get into DSP processors for embedded stuff but most of them seem to be assembly-focused.
