So when I was growing up the kit down the street with way too fucking much money had a switch on his television that allowed him to switch between all his consoles (and this fucker had em all let me tell you).
I want something like this for the modern day. My television has two HDMI inputs but that's not enough for all my devices. Obviously I can switch the cables out, I do it all the time, there is no reason I need my Blu Ray player, HTPC, and Xbox 360 and whatever else hooked up at the same time, but I had back surgery not to long ago and aside from that its a huge pain in the dick.
So I don't know whats its called, and I don't know what to search for.
Like if you have 4HDMI devices to choose from but using one HDMI input and you can switch between them.
What the fuck is this called and do you have any of them you'd recommend.
My professor let me and my friend install GNU/Linux distro on PC. He chose Ubuntu (he's new to GNU/Linux). I'd normally go with Arch but our network speed is ~120KBps so I wouldn't be able to perform installation under 45 mins.
Which distro would you recommend? Not depending on network at school is top priority. Pacman would be preferred.
does this 1463849131543 show when the file was uploaded to or saved from 4chan?

ok, so i'm trying to learn to program.
i see a python/C api.
why shouldn't i learn both python and C at the same time? one scripting language and one hardware language?
i've REALIZED that there's NO learning source for programming. not really. there are books that help a little. but really you just have to put two and two together, look up documentation, figure things out through experimentation, and studying code that does cool stuff and learning how it does it, modifying it, and stuff like that.
so how do you guys feel about learning C and python at the same time - trying to do the same thing in both of them, seeing the difference between them, shit like that. i hear a lot of people appreciate the combination of python and C?
It should work, why not. Hell, you'll even get a perspective of OOP.
However there are many things that will be real hard to make in C that will be a breeze in python. So don't be too strict about it. However python is so rigid that the difference should be mostly related to using bigums and dynamic allocation.
Anyway you're pretty much right about learning how to program.
>>57219001
>but really you just have to put two and two together, look up documentation, figure things out...
Yup.
>so how do you guys feel about learning C and python at the same time
I would do it with C++ instead, but otherwise it's a great idea. And for anyone looking to complain, No, I'm not advocating this because C++ has OOP features, I'm advocating this because ISO C is miserable to use due to it's:
- irritating struct syntax.
- irritating initializer list syntax.
- irritating heap interaction "syntax".
- lack of exceptions.
- lack of bool types outside of a header (why...).
- lack of function overloading.
- and my personal favorite, lack of namespaces in a language without classes to use in their place.
Even if you're going to write ISO C style code and never touch OOP with a ten foot barge pole, C++ is still the language to do it in (outside of systems where you don't have the juggernaut that is the C++ compiler available to you of course).
>>57219421
well, i've thought about that and heard a lot of the things people say about C. but one of the main things i'm interested is programming hardware controllers, and i've heard C is still kind of the standard for programming microcontrollers in devices and stuff?
that and C feels like the 'heart' of programming to me, if you will, seems like most later languages borrow the sense from it.
i'll probably switch to C++ after the differences and disadvantages of C become more visceral and obvious to me.
Success in anything requires obsession. I can't say it enough, you must be OBSESSED. To obtain success, must be OBSESSED with that, there's no other way around it. You have to find something within, and that's got to push you, and that's got to elevate you, and that's got to drive you, and that's got to move you, and when you find out what your why is, and that why has to be deeper than you, when you find your WHY, you find a way to make it happen. If you die today, what dreams, what ideas, what talents, what books, what leadership, what voice will die with you?
What is your motivation, what moves you, what drives you?
>>57218943
>what voice will die with you?
>What is your motivation, what moves you, what drives you?
Nothing.
>>57218943
The only thing I've ever been that obsessed with was World of Warcraft.
Not everybody is meant to be successful or change the world.

Yes. get off your lazy ass and push a vacuum for 10 minutes. christ.
Will the 1080Ti be available to buy in January or just officially announced?
I need an entire new PC and wondering if I should hold off or just bite the bullet now.

Daily reminder that if you have alot of experience in Linux and you're not using Gentoo, you are wasting time and you should kill yourself
But what if I don't have a lot of experience?
It's a preference thing. I prefer Fedora and I've been using GNU*/Linux for 4 years.

Is there a minimum resolution needed for facial recognition to actually work? Thinking of getting a really lose res (640x480, maybe 320x240 if I can find it) webcam and perhaps putting a little vaseline on the lens, just enough to make it slightly blurry.
hey dude have you ever been out in public or have a drivers license?

Facial recognition software is going to be going the way of the dodo now that any high res picture you steal off facebook or 3d printer can make something that can fool it.

Should I really fucking care for the death rate meme or just go for the it just fucking works?
I really need to start hoarding now that every fucking tracker is diying

I have 10 seagate hdds. Four 9 years old 160gb drives in raid running 24/7, two 5 years old 1.5tb drives running basically 24/7 and four 2 years old 1tb drives in raid. 0 problems
I had two 1tb caviar greens both of them died just weeks after warrantee expired, had an 500gb black drive died after 3 years, also had an 500gb blue drive in my laptop, died after 2 years...
Had two Toshiba 320gb drives, one of them died, the another one is full of bad sectors.
So that is my personal experience...
>sick of my WD black because its slow and noisy as fuck for 4 years
>buy a shitgate to get some more storage because cheap as fuck
>almost 200% faster than the black and silent as fuck
Just go for the cheap crap and keep a backup
Wait for SSD storage
What's your monitor setup look like /g/?
What's your dream setup?
Id like an 8x3 array of 1440p monitors
Right now, two 1920x1080 in landscape orientation. Because all I do is shitpost, most of the time I'm only looking at one monitor. However it's nice having the extra space so I can put fb2k on the second monitor, or if I need to move files or something it's nice having two monitors, again, for more space.
I'm okay with 1920x1080 for each monitor, mainly because I also game and like high framerates but am "poor". If I had a system that could run 2560x1440 at a consistent >=120 FPS, I'd get two displays of that resolution, obviously that could output >= 120Hz. I'd like to also try a second monitor in portrait orientation for muh fizzbuzzes.
>>57218232
pic related is my desktop. My right monitor is the vertical one and it's at about 45 degree angle.
I wouldn't call it my dream setup but I have no idea what my dream setup would be, currently this works very well and I have no reason to get another monitor.

Bad time for this meme when Nvidia had to rush out a hotfix driver literally yesterday because they botched the previous one so badly.

Is it worth it learning assembly? If so, x86 or ARM?
It's worth being able to read it and understand how it corresponds to C code, but don't bother learning to write it well unless you have a reason to.
>>57217902
Learn whatever platform you have available, which is probably x86. Unless you're programming for some crazy esoteric architecture, all the skills transfer pretty well between architectures.
x86 has the benefit that you can play around with SIMD on it, while most ARM chips don't have SIMD instructions.

What you're referring to as Windows 386 is actually Windows/386, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Windows + 386.
