Hello /g/

I've been using second hand thinkpads for four years now, and been a full-time linux user for one and a half. I'm now in the market for a premium linux laptop.

I'm currently thinking of the fully specced version of the Dell XPS 13 (pictured):
- Comes with (and, by extension, manufacturer supports) Ubuntu
- i7 7500U Kaby Lake
- QHD screen (although the touch is unnecessary)
- Good battery life, with the option of a portable charger
- Good manufacturer warranty
- Small and portable
- USB-C support

Prove me wrong - Why shouldn't I get this as a premium laptop?

A 1080p version supposedly gets way better battery life. And IMO 1080p is enough for 13" screen.
Also new hp spectre is pretty good but don't know how is Linux support.
>>
>>57260844
1080p isn't enough to scale properly into a useful resolution.

I've heard some bad things about Dell's support and quality checks, not sure if true though? Perhaps someone can prove me wrong?

I'm also looking for a new laptop with good Loonix support, currently eyeing Lenovo Thinkpad t560 but will probably wait till t570 is out.

Pic very related, I mean look at that full keyboard on a laptop, it's pure sexxx!

>Musk was ousted in October 2000 from his role as CEO due to disagreements with other company leadership, notably over his desire to move PayPal's Unix-based infrastructure to Microsoft Windows. In October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for US$1.5 billion in stock, of which Musk received US$165 million.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk#X.com_and_PayPal

>Musk became CEO of the combined company and decided it was time for a technological overhaul. Specifically, he wanted to toss out Unix and put everything on a Microsoft platform.

>That may sound innocent enough to laypeople but not to Unix zealots like Levchin and his team. A holy war ensued. Musk lost. The board fired him and brought back Thiel while Musk was on a flight to Australia for his first vacation in years. “That’s the problem with vacations,” Musk deadpans.

If it's a question about adopting Windows or firing him, then the latter is very obviously more reasonable.
>>
>>57260684
like no question about it
its the stupidest thing Ive ever read

his whole existing team of unix developers would be useless and needed to be let go

and they would need to pay millions to microsoft for licensing and be at mercy of their support time lines

and so much work would needed to be redone, probably thousands of men hours in development cost...

strange that the board did not have balls to call him and fire him, but do it when he leaves for vacation... seems like they feared he might do something "unpredictable"
>>
even microsoft doesn't use windows for their big servers (bing etc) and has azure linux meme

fucking sad how dumb musk is

When it comes to full disk encryption does /g/ use a triple cascade? AES --- > Twofish ---> Serpent seems to be the most common triple encryption method (supported in veracrypt, for example) but are there actually any non-neckbearded, real-world contexts in which this kind of overkill setup is even appropriate?

Which i7 is this shit? On Microsoft webpage just says i5 or i7.

If this computer has a 6500U will be just a beautiful trash.

Panos said it's a quad core i7, so it can't be 6500U, most probably a 6700HQ or 4720HQ.
>>
i7 and i5 is a meaningless description in regards to mobile CPUs.

I used to believe it was like this in regards to mobile Intel CPUs.

i3: Dual core
i5: Dual core with hyperthreading
i7: Quad core

Until I learned how wrong I was.

It should brake.
But, if it had to happen, run the humans over. Better chance for them to survive than the dogs from what I'd assume.
>>
>>57259918
obviously kill the dogs.

how is this dilemma different from being at the wheel deciding this shit? the real hard questions are so much less retarded, too. like if you have self driving cars, do they let a drunk person get a ride home? should it lock him out from the override functions? what if he sobers up and tries to prevent the car from crashing into a truck or something? what about kids? should a car drive 5 kids to school without an adult in the car? same truck-accident issue as before; what if one of them tries to stop the car? how should it differentiate a drunk man from a rambunctious child from a man who's now sober and trying to prevent his own death or a child who's trying to do the same?

these all involve the AI making a decision that wouldn't have to be made otherwise, that require us to tell the AI to do something that will lead to some people dying either way.
>>
The people have the right of way, why the fuck would you run them over?

Please tell me the dogs are the right answer.
I don't need any more rage-inducing shit tonight.

Let's be real /g/, if we want Linux to succeed as a desktop OS, if we want the year of the Linux desktop to actually happen, we need to unify behind a distro to stop confusing and scaring newfriends.

Since a DE isn't as important because it can be changed any time after installation I'm thinking we disregard that completely and just focus on sorting out the best beginner distro first. Which DE a person may like is subjective and it's wrong to judge a distro based on the DE which can be changed extremely easily.

Hopefully thanks to this, next time we get a newfriend asking about which Distro is the best for beginners we'll have much less confusion and spam.

Part of the reason why Linux is struggling to gain popularity as a desktop OS is that it's too fragmented and there's simply too much choice, and for someone who doesn't know any better, for someone who will come here for advice, we shouldn't frighten them away by bickering amongst ourselves.

Post your distro below, explain why you think it's best, and other anons may debate with you over why it's a good choice or not.
