Why does academia push functional programming so hard when it has no real-world use, /g/?
it helps open your eyes to different abstractions when you're forced to use only functional programming.
This may be useful later when working with multi-paradigm languages.
>>57275341
>academia push functional programming
They don't.
>>57275368
Well businesses certainly aren't, anon.

does Ruby on Rails have any significant advantage over Laravel at all?
you'll be programming in a language that won't drive you to shoot up a primary school
>>57275149
Ruby used to be faster than PHP, I don't know if that's still the case.
Also with Rails you have the gems repository, which is great.
>>57275149
Both are shit.
Hey guys I got touchid on my new macbook what do you think?
>leaving your password on every object you touch
why do companies keep pushing this?
>>57275138
Not secure at all, stupid even. All someone has to do is drug you (or kill you) and they can hold your finger to the laptop to access it.
>>57275185
because it's easier than typing things in and for the proportion of people that will use "password" as their password, the fingerprint is more secure.
the amount of effort that would need to go into spoofing a biometric sensor or the like generally precludes normies from needing to worry about that shit. and in this context, neckbeards are normies.
I'm trying to build a moving sculpture, pic related. I want the eye (red LED) to move in a lifelike, oscillating motion. A pre-built, battery powered set up is preferred, but at this point I'll take anything, because oscillating leds/ led sockets seem to not exist. Nothing too bright, like a police signal, either.
Anybody know where I could find this? Sorry if wrong forum, but it seems like some people here would know if anywhere.
>>57275096
how are you gonna be building this? it sounds really cool
im not sure i get what you want? why not just wire a red bulb on a battery and hang it with a rope?

Hey /g/uys, I was recommended to use Ubuntu Trusty instead of Xenial in order to avoid systemd, but I'm not sure if the 2 and a half years of long-term support remaining will be enough for a decent major distro alternative to come up.
Isn't there some unofficial flavour of Ubuntu still running upstart out there?
Alternatively: how do I uninstall systemd from Jessie?

Is KFC the US embassy or something?
ye, stupid jew chinks rushed it though.
if i had to choose between iphone 7, google pixel and samsung note 7, id shoot myself
if i cant shoot myself id get samsung so it can explode near my head and kill me hopefully
I don't understand. The chances of one of these exploding are incredibly small. Like .02% over its lifetime.
/g/entoomen,
I need some advice. I didn't major in computer science in college, but I am thinking of a career switch because I hate my job and coding as always interested me. I have a BA in economics from a decent school (UC Santa Barbara) and a few years work experience in finance/accounting related industry.
What is my best route to become employable? Another bachelors degree? Masters program? Some sort of credential I can earn online? Teach myself? Some ideal combination of the above?
I know some Python (college course) and C (self taught) but I'm very rusty so I'd basically be starting fresh. Any help/harsh truths/shitposting is appreciated!
You can learn yourself and go to some code camps then start a few projects to use as a portfolio, host them on your own web server or on a git and use those as a way into a junior position
>>57274790
Why do you hate your job
Grass is always greener you millenial fuck
>>57274819
I do retirement plan admin (literally the most boring, nitpicky, mind-numbing job you could imagine), I work out of my boss's house, & I (ironically) don't have any benefits. I turn 26 soon, so I need to get a big boy job with healthcare. Also any sort of finance or accounting related job is filled with assertive republicans who only talk about football and golf and big titties. I don't fit in at all and it would hold me back big time in my career because I absolutely loathe that culture.
My job does not require any critical thought and is all about digging through yuge books like pic related researching the most obnoxiously arcane tax issues to help small business owners swindle their already underpaid employees out of a few bucks. It's honestly fucking depressing.
Coding seems all about problem solving and critical thinking which sounds way more engaging and fun. (Also I have dabbled and I like it.)
>>57274803
This confirms what I've read elsewhere. How common is it to get a position without any sort of academic certificate? Will the fact that I don't have a degree automatically close a lot of doors? I can afford to go back to school.
>code camps
