How do I make pure Arch out of it? Editing pacman.conf seems too thin.

can't do that. i tried installing it using archanywhere and ended up with a blank screen twice for some reason.

Download Architect ISO, it has a GUI similar to Ubuntu minimal CD.

I must warn you that it has bugs and issues and rarely installs Arch properly without fucking up somewhere.

I don't see why people would choose anything other than Ubuntu if they are serious about using the OS outside of a VM.

Give me a round up on Mageia - Why haven't I heard about it before? Is it just another "look at us we're special!" distro on debian base or?
I'd honestly google but I'm busy atm

Linux users:
>Here's why I like Linux:
>It's Unix-like and therefore structured in a much better way than Windows
>Having a package manager is extremely convenient
>I have a very useful and powerful shell
>I can make my desktop look and behave however *I* want it to
>I have full control over my entire system
>I can have a bleeding-edge system with the latest software or a very stable system
>I can also have a very lightweight system
>I will always recieve free updates and no shady company can control my system in any way
>The community makes decisions, not some shady company
>I know how my system works and how it is structured
>I have the freedom to do anything I want with it
>The list goes on and on.

The problem is that GNU/Linux users blame their ineptitude with anything other than GNU/Linux on the OS rather than laying blame where it really belongs on themselves.

It's kind of funny seeing so many of these supposedly really "technically adept" types go all apeshit over people using Windows or OSX. My experience is that it's usually just their ego telling them that "No, you can't be bad at something relating to computers, so it has to be something other than you" to avoid having to admit that they only know how to use GNU/Linux.

Personally I dumped GNU/Linux for Windows around 2007 after a lot of torture and mental gymnastics tinkering with UNIX stuff in GNU/Linux, all my desktops have since then have run Windows.

At this point GNU/Linux has to me become "That OS the clueless, kids who want to play pretend sysadmin and those who think uploading their dotfiles to github makes them a 1337 programmer" use. Pretty much all the software I run into, even the obscure stuff like AVR Studio, Matlab, Quartus II, etc., run on Windows and many that are "Linux-only" can be used with cygwin/msys, VM or even built for Windows natively with a cross compiler.
>>
>>57297022
I don't think you even read my post since you posted your pasta that quickly. I have listed many reasons why I think it is a good OS, it's not like I'm saying Linux is better because "I'm such a hacker".

A lot of Windows users post stuff like this:
>Linux stuff sucks! Proprietary software is much better!
But then contradict themselves with this:
>But you can install hacks like Cygwin to emulate a Linux environment to make Windows usable!
So which one is it?
>>
>>57297022
Depends on the task you're trying to accomplish and the complexity of it. If the task is "here's some software, the OS needs to run it", and all the complexity is contained in that software and not the OS, Windows is generally simpler. (Exception: if the distro packages the software for you) If, on the other hand, you're trying to make a component of the OS do something other than what it does by default (Example: mucking with firewall rules) then you quickly reach a point with Windows where it starts getting in your way, and the main thing you want is what Linux gives you: A way to tell the OS "Shut up and do what I tell you".

install antergos, never had a problem with it and doesn't introduce new bugs with stupid shit like Manjaro.
if you have the time just install arch and set it up, it isn't that hard either.
But avoid Manjaro unless you love the be face fucked by big mandingos.

Their peripherals are good but are overpriced.
People say their power supplies are shit but I've had a corsair 600w for 2+ years now and haven't had any issues.

Hey, I havent build a PC since the late 00s, due to the fact that I was barely at home in the last five years so I just used my laptop + a rented server for more demanding tasks. Now I would like to own a real computer again, have decided on this so far: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/2Mnrcc
any suggestions? I don't game, use linux-distros and want to compile some private projects on my machine.

I'm sorry dude but you should really read up before attempting to build something, rather than be spoon fed.

But I won't be a full on prick and tell you this. Your CPU can't overclock but you picked a motherboard for overclocking (decide if you do want to over clock, if yes get a CPU with a K at the end. If not, get a H110 motherboard.)

Don't get 4x4GB ram. If something get 2x8GB to use dual channel mode for a little bit of extra speed.

CPU cooler is not that great, just go with the good old 212 EVO.
>>
>>57296772
Correction, H170 not H110. It will allow you to get a RAID in future if you want one
>>
If you're building a GNU/Linux machine you have to seriously consider your choice of dedicated GPU.

The best (as in hassle-free) solution is going for integrated GPU in your intel CPU. Look for a processor with IrisPro (or whatever it was called), it offers a decent performance for what it is.
It will work out of the box since intel provides source for their graphical drivers and they're included in the kernel as regular driver blobs. Won't cause any trouble.

The remaining contenders are different pairs of shoes.

If going for AMD gpu absolutely forget about proprietary drivers. They're utter garbage, they introduce glitches, they're extremely picky about kernel and xorg versions, you might update only to have your screen never come up again. And of course AMD has a tradition of abandoning their hardware few kernel versions down the line.

Opensource drivers are a lot better, performance difference is there (around 5-10% less), but they work out of the box. On a desktop computer the energy saving bit should not concern you that much.

Nvidia cards are an exact opposite. The opensource noveau drivers are garbage that won't boot up half the time, the proprietary ones are decent (as in it's possible to work with them).

Pick your poison, but do it right.
If you don't need GPU performance i would recommend getting investing in a better intel cpu with iris graphics.

It is the compositor. Unity has Compiz and only thing close to it Compton but it has glitches in Xubuntu which are annoying.

You should install Compiz or switch over to Unity.
