/g/ents, I have a laptop lying around and I want to use it as a simple word processor to let me write without distractions, which distro would be most comfy for that purpose?
I've only used ubuntu.
>>57308948
Dos
>>57308948
Debian.
>>57308971
While you do have a point, I'd very much like to be able to easily save and transfer my work online. Also fuck George RR Martin and his pretentious dos word processor
Rank the mainstream Windows versions from best to worst. 3.1 and older don't count because they were little more than DOS shells.
1) 7
2) XP
3) 2000
4) Vista
5) NT4
6) 98
7) 95
8) ME
9) 8/8.1
10) 10
95 is "dos shell" my friend
>>57308944
why is 10 the worst?
>>57309070
I know it is. Let me rephrase: Only count the mainstream versions (not server) and only the ones with a taskbar.
>>57309075
Because biggest botnet, ugly user interface, and advertising everywhere.
My gran wants a tablet, she just wants it for the usual web browsing, email, youtube viewing, also viewing sheet music pdf files.
She doesn't play video games so that's not necessarily a selling point,.
I have looked at various ones but find it hard to make a choice between them all, so many different makes and varieties?
I quite like the apple ipad mini4 or the samsung s2, apple do sell refurbished, but they seem expensive for what are essentially secondhand goods?
And if someone is used to windows is it hard for them to learn ios or android?
looking to spend around £150-300 ($180-370)

tl;dr- packages (meaning both unprivileged apps and system services) are downloaded over an insecure, easily MITM-able connection. Digital signatures are available and are downloaded, and the fact that they are downloaded is presented to the user. The user therefore believes that their updates are being verified.
However these signatures are NOT actually being verified by Gentoo.
Possible solutions:
* Only use a secure connection to downloads the updates
* Always verify the digital signatures of the updates
* Preferably, both
This is unlikely to have a wide impact, because nobody in their right mind uses Gentoo in production (ChromeOS is based on it, but has its own security mechanisms) and nobody is interested in MITMing neckbeards' chinkpads.

Intel, AMD and ARM all have R&D in Israel. Intel is the biggest foreign employer in Israel.

I'm looking for a mid range (£500-£700) laptop that has specs good enough to do some gaming on (specifically grand strategy games) and maybe some others. What's going to get me the best bang for my buck?
15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and Touch ID

get some second hand 960m laptops from msi or asus. The 10 series laptops are olling out now, so you can definitely get something for very cheap on eBay.
I've got a laptop you might be interested in, but will send you an ebay link if you want.

I've been looking at the ASUS Zenbook UX310UA. It goes towards £700 but it has a skylake i5 and 1800p screen.
Made a map converter that converts Quake 3 Engine maps to Source Engine maps. Had to convert every model and texture from a source game so i could use them in Quake 3's editor, GTKRadiant.
Pic related is the map i made for testing.
What have you been working on lately?
Will this work for Source 2?
>>57307977
Fuck source. This makes me want to play Quake 3 again.
>>57308048
i've never tried source 2's hammer since it only works on dota 2. and i fucking hate dota 2. but since source 2's hammer editor is backwards comptaible when it comes to raw map files it should work just fine.

How can anybody claim Java is slow?
spergs vocal about java are the same ones who are vocal about PHP. they're unemployable smell sperg cs dropouts who only got into programming because it allows them to be infinitely different from "normies" using mainstream and easy languages. these are the type of pieces of shit who spend years making some esoteric hello world in an ironic dead 80s lang. they have their dick in their hand as they "program" while the "normies" go and start making $100K a year before they're 25.
>>57307775
The startup is slow as fuck, making it unusable on the desktops. Great for servers though.
Also lel at node

Try any application creating / reallocating millions of objects per second.
>In Java, you will be forced to write your own memory management and force JVM to disable GC, thus completely defeating the concept of Java in the first place.
Try any application doing some simple mathematics like Fast Fourier transform.
>In the end, you will use some library which calls low abstraction code written in C to speed up.
Try any application which must be real time.
>Java just can't do this.
Try writing your own simple app in C and in Java. Compare run times and memory use.
>Until you find gcc (or better) compiler for java, it will be bad.
As we are now, C is in 99% the best you can get out of your hardware.
On the other hand, writing C code without errors can be slow and hard.
And once you try to port your application from win <-> nix <-> osx <-> android
you will go mad.
