When I got my first smartphone I was shocked how fast the battery drains. I miss having a phone that only needs a charge twice a month, but I love having GPS and maps and shit.

Do you like math? Like solving discrete problems such as determining the run time of an algorithm or determining thread safety of an algorithm? Perhaps even some calculus in the case of solving recurrence relations?

Or do you like trade skills? Finding the solution by using preexisting tools and flow charts. Diagnostics and maintenance of complex infrastructure similar to a mechanic or a HVAC technician sound good to you?

Both have their place. CS majors learn more about how Red Hat's kernel works but not how to deploy it as an enterprise web server. As far as trades go, IT, from a good school and well rounded certifications, is just as useful to a company as a programmer.
