I'm having a hard time finding a Linux environment to settle down with. Basically, most of them suck in different ways. Nothing is coming together as a good whole. I'll give you a rundown on what I think of the main ones. I'm focusing on both desktop and laptop use.
>Gnome 3
Definition of bloat and adding abstraction to what should be kept simple. Focusing development towards tablets? Frequent breakage. I don't like it for either of my purposes.
>KDE
The other big popular one. Seems better than above now, but is polarizing and even more "bloated". I don't like it's look. It doesn't seem to get out of my way and let me work normally. Can anyone tell me how to make it look good?
>Unity
>>>Oobontoo and Canonjew
Memes aside it looks like it has improved a lot. Again, it doesn't "get out of the way" and let me just do my work. It defines the entire experience of using vanilla Ubuntu for me. I'm in the group that is massively turned off by its look and taskbars.
>Cinnamon
Best alternative for me. Just works. Biggest problem would be the way it does workspaces now. I had it break once so I know where the consistency people are coming from. I'm iffy about how the mint team is forking and patching a bunch of "Xapps" with it.
>MATE
It's still a Gnome continuation. Their philosophy in itself is destructive, see what happened to Gnome 3. It does get out of the way and look nice with just a little bit of effort at least. Longtime mate user experiences?
>XFCE
I like it. Simple and customizable. Seems like the best option when you want to play around with different file managers and so on. This being said I'm shit at ricing it as well. Guides on customizing it would be appreciated.
>LXDE, LXQT and so on
K DEs, I think there is a market for them. I don't work on ancient hardware tho. And at that point WMs get even more attractive.
>New hipster DEs
Teach me about them pls
Reaching post limit, will discuss WMs if thread gets interest.
>>57398354
DEs are garbage senpai.
use a wm
>>57398354
>Definition of bloat and adding abstraction to what should be kept simple.
Explain yourself.
Linux is trash.
Install Aqua + BSD + Mach
as for DEs there, Pantheon looked quite nice.

Can we at least get a bing automated random object searcher software for easy points?
Too bad most of those are either fake or way too much time consuming.
hey /g/, have you ever paid for your pc to get repired?
I use mostly use my pc for my small business but a little gaming/streaming stuff too.
Is it worth paying a pro to sort shit out?
Our stupid lady in south carolina, her computer was fucked up, she took it in, she doesn't know computers by the way, she took it in to some guy to get it fixed, he wasn't even a professional, just some guy she knew, and it wasn't even fixed when she got it back, he claimed he added RAM or something, and then I think she wanted it to be fixed so bad that she would be like "Oh yeah it's running so great now!" but she kept complaining about not being able to do basic shit like open PDF files and whatnot
>>57398211
It depends on the sort of trouble you're having Senpai. Most problems can be fixed yourself with little to no headache in my experience.
>>57398252
>Senpai
haha im 25 but thanks.
Im not dumb but I have tried to fix little issues with my pc with no success. my problem are:
low gaming fps on modern games like doom with a gtx 970.
Sound drop outs whilst gaming, streaming (even youtube) and playing music.
Pop ups and slow downs
fuck your mother

Can I get a better price/performance on what I buy by buying on Black Friday/Cyber Monday or by waiting three months?
>>57397879
There are no actually good deals on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
>>57397907
How so?
>>57397879
Hahahaha depends on what you think your good deal is, if you want an inferior product for a lower price, then yes. If you want the same product for q lower price, then no(generally speaking, my experience is limited to best buy though and may not be representative of the market where you will be purchasing your devices)

What is /g/'s preferred Android Emulator?
Bluestacks is shit bloatware!
android x86 over kvm/hyperv
Nox went to shit and filled up with more ads, I'm using koplayer now but that's just for ffrk
install remix OS on a separate partition and will dual boot alongside with windows. No android emulator can compete with this android OS on PC.
I can't seem to find any bandwidth monitors for Windows that are any good, any suggestions? If I could I'd just rely on custom router firmware monitoring but I'm in a situation where I can't utilize that.
I use networx
>>57397636
http://www.solarwinds.com/free-tools/free-network-tools
Though seeing as you don't have the ability to modify router settings (and likely don't have an enterprise-grade router) you won't be able to use netflow.
Borrowing thread a little…
Is there anything like this https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html for Windows?
