Seriously, fuck all messengers apps. They became victim of their own success.
When smartphones were just taking off, it was all good. Everyone had one or two apps for communication over the internet and it was all good.
Nowadays:
>Viber - For group of friends nr 1
>WhatsApp - For group of friends nr 2
>Skype - To contact grandparents
>Skype for Business - For work
>Telegram and XMPP - for GF
>GG - For my Polish friends living in the past
Fuck this all. I swapped my PAYG card for £5 a month plan with unlimited texts and enough free minutes so I don't have to deal with this shit any more.

I plan on buying an e-reader for recreational reading and putting school text books onto. So it must be able to import e-pubs and the like, and not be only restricted to DRM books.

Textbooks are typically large format and image heavy. Scrolling is gonna be annoying.
I want to get a large format eink reader, but those are expensive.
You should look into a tablet, its what i did, and i hate reading off a tablet, but it was way better than when i tried to load a textbook on my simple touch.
