How could BOINC be used to improve Linux and FOSS ecosystem in general?

I want to donate my processing power for some good cause

Also, are there any other similar or even better distributed computing projects?

How does it compare to ZeroNet? I started downloading the installer but got bored and cancelled it halfway through, figuring it must be at least as shit as ZN.

pls explain

If you were to put all the resources used by one of the largest BBS systems, Rusty and Edie's, in to one machine you would end up with a computer with a 3.1 GHz (single core) CPU, 16GB of storage, 375 MB of RAM, and 128 lines, and would pull 140 amps, as well as dehumidifiers and air conditioning.

Today that system could be replaced with a single-board computer powered by solar panels.

But now major websites (the modern BBS) consume entire warehouses and gobble up as much power as a small town, and it's estimated at 'the internet' and all associated technologies consume at least 15% of the entire world's electricity.

And with a move to an image and video heavy consumption of entertainment, and script-heavy interactive pages, it looks only set to grow once 4K becomes the accepted standard definition and people stream over 4G (uses 20x the power as wi-fi).

What's /g/'s opinion on this?

We're consumers; we don't deserve one.

It has to stop. Seriously, the state of the web is cancer right now. HTML5 plus a bit of css would be ok, but the massiv amount of js and tracking is horrendous.
>>
>>57524017
OP wasn't talking about JS or tracking.

Apparently real coding isn't for me.
I'm being formed into domotics and automation as an electrician.
Do you know any simple sofware that let's you program arduino through PLC languages such is ladder or sfc?

Look into PIC Logic Boards. Has a basic input put control and are programmed with flow chart type software. No real code involved.

No, i don't. Now install Solus

I start my browser once per computer usage session. Roughly like 2-3 times per day. Startup times are negligible.

Why don't people build their own variations of distros?

Why don't people build their own firefox?

Find a variation you like and add and remove to suit it more to your liking. This is one of the best things about open source.

It can't be that hard?

>Why don't people build their own variations of distros?
it's a ton of work for very little purpose. You try keeping up with new releases, security bulletins, relations with upstream, compatibility, and bugs for a few thousand packages.

People do it regardless though. Look at Mint. It's a poorly-run distro that's essentially just a broken Ubuntu with a different DE. They shouldn't run a distro, they should be a DE project.
>>
they do.

look at waterfox, cyberfox, palemoon, even just build configs like tete's atelier: http://www1.plala.or.jp/tete009/en-US/software.html

it is a lot of work to do it and to maintain it if you significantly fork from central trunk, though
>>
>Why don't people build their own variations of distros?

Because we use our computer to do our work, not to have our computer be our work like you aspie-asshats do

>Why don't people build their own Firefox?

Because that's retarded

Razer Blade (2016 v2) vs Macbook Pro (2016)

Both are sleek as hell, good battery life, thin.
Razer has 1060 GTX inside. Mac has .. trash.

Any reasons to select Mac over Razer?

Mac has a good enough card. You should save gaming anyway for an eGPU for the Razer Blade or a desktop.

Privacy implies encryption, which immediatly draws attention to your communications unless everyone encrypts.
>>

Not as private and secure as they want you to believe.
A lit more private and secure than most competitors and with nice features.

you got fooled by the silicon valley hype machine.

Reality is most projects are failures, especially on the appstores, which are just fucking endless waves of the same shit.
