If the windows explorer DE looks nice and wine can run windows programs on linux, then why not just use explorer in wine?
All your DE problems would be solved that easily
>>57592737
I actually do this
>>57592737
wine can't run windows program on linux, you're misinfomed

For what purpose? KDE plasma is better in every way.

I'm looking for a lossless video format in ffmpeg that isn't H.264 with lossless mode enabled.
Trouble is I can't find one that isn't both larger AND slower than H.264. I want to find one that is larger but faster...
Anyone here that use ffmpeg for lossless video encoding?
Should mention that YUV4MPEG is a bit too lossless for me, with 100 GB per 10 minutes of 1080p video...
But I'm surprised both ffv1 and huffyuv failed me.
>>57592478
>Trouble is I can't find one that isn't both larger AND slower than H.264.
Welcome to lossless video formats.

Basically "free" is open source but much more socialist

Now it's Ruby's turn to have an appreciation thread

ruby is python done right.
ruby is deprecated. use python for scripts, node.js for meme webdev
Ruby is fantastic, what books do you guys like?
What's /g/'s opinion on using this for retarded family members? I don't have much use for a pw manager but I was thinking of getting my parents and sister to start using 1Password, they reuse really unsafe passwords on multiple sites.
The family plan pricing doesn't seem unreasonable and it looks like I could manage everything for them remotely. Basically, I want them to start using a pw manager, it's not the best solution but I know they won't bother making unique safe pw for all their logins. 1Password seem pretty idiot proof and has a nice UI. I want something that will be the least amount of work for me to setup and manage on their behalf.
Thoughts?
Common Sense 2016 comes with a nice password manager called Memory
>>57592288
Seems better than using insecure passwords.
>>57592950
The only way to remember secure passwords is using some kind of mnemonic. For normies, "memory" means "[firstname]1234" or "passw0rd".
How do normies react when you tell them you're a freetard and what the free software philosophy means?
We don't. What the fuck is wrong with you?
Letting regular people who don't spend every waking hour ricing their desktop in desktop threads like us our power level is extremely humiliating.
>>57592268
Actually just the other night I was talking to this guy who works for microsoft but not as a programmer (i didn't know this) he helps with when they purchase a smaller company some confusing shit or soemthing.
Anwyays I'm like blah blah open source != free but then he was like 'oh i was at this party with some people who did groundbreaking work recently on some freesoftware stuff.'
Them guys he was referencing were as developers at microsfot.

I believe we call that field Mergers and Acquisitions.
Let me give you my card.
Redpill me on Displayport
is it better than both DVI and HDMI? pros? cons?
>>57592252
The D in HDMI stands for DRM.

It radiates estrogen when you plug it in

Is there any point in dual-booting Linux when you can just use a virtual machine anyway?

Why would I ever want to use them when keyboard shortcuts exist?
Is it still viable today? Will Volta be worth the wait? I own MSI flavor of pic related and was thinking about holding off until Volta to upgrade.
>>57592013
>Is it still viable today?
What are you using it for? I personally think so but I'm not into all of the latest games
>Will Volta be worth the wait?
It depends on what kind of GPU changes we'll see. While HBM is really cool, having only 8GB of it won't provide a huge advantage over the current Titan X which already offers 480GB/s of memory bandwidth with GDDR5X. AMD using GDDR5X on their typical 512-bit memory interface would have 640GB/s of memory bandwidth.
I'd hold off if you can still get enjoyment out of your 780Ti
>>57592013
yeah as long as its an aftermarket 780 ti. the stock reference ones run like shit and perform like shit in recent benchmarks but the aftermarket ones still hold strong and compete with the 480/1060.
>>57592098
>>57592119
I'm using it mostly for 720P gaming, but recently in more modern games I've noticed a huge drop in performance, sometimes not even getting 60FPS at max. It's paired with a 2500k @ 3.3, so I've been thinking about upgrading when Volta comes out; but if Volta turns out to be intel-tier marginal performance increase, I might just wait even longer.
how do you install mesa dri intel ivy bridge driver after you install a linux distro? i have never been able to figure this out which is why i use fedora because it comes pre-installed.
ever time i try to install it, lightdm fails to start and i can't get to the desktop
