I just built this need to manage my cables better.
Well a friend asks me to install a "fresh" XP on her dad's laptop. I pick the laptop up, some old HP with Celeron, proceed with the installation from CD and ~40 minutes later it prints out "???o" on screen and I'm greeted with corrupted menu for disk formatting. Selection for disk partitions is a heart sign it seems...
I've never seen something like this happen, does this mean CD is corrupted or hard drive lived it's days?
I don't think it has anything to do with the hard drive. Looks like either the laptop's memory or motherboard is faulty, or the CD is corrupted somehow. I'd propose to run Memtest86 on it for some time, and if possible boot some live CD to see if it's going to work or also be problematic.
Btw did it take 40 minutes to just get to the basic text-mode partition selection/format etc. menu? What was happening in the meantime?

>???o
Lel. It's still way more classy than Microsoft's recent stupid :( bluescreens or "something happened" messages.

Well she's never going to talk to you again after you bricked her dads laptop.
Good job
>replaced windows 10 with Arch Linux
>started using duckduckgo instead of google
>using firefox instead of chrome
>installed adblock, noscript, decentraleyes, privacy badger, https everywhere, better privacy and self-destructing cookies (all on firefox)
>only using open source software that's been reviewed (e.g. anything from GNU, transmission, thunderbird, vlc etc.)
>deleted facebook, twitter, snapchat, whatsapp, google, apple and more accounts (never used them anyway inb4 normie accusations)
>turned router firewall security settings up to maximum (whatever the fuck that means/actually does)
>using a VPN for everything (PIA for those wondering)
>use tor/i2p for non interactive web browsing
>no webcam or mic
>use a password format for which there are about 80^16 different combinations - every account has a different password, I change them regularly
>I don't appear on any search engine results, I've removed 90% of pictures of myself from the internet
>encrypted hard drive
I was thinking of buying one of those open source routers and setting up GPG. What else can I do to escape the watchful eye of these authoritarian turds?
Use Qubes OS instead of Arch for more streamlined and easier security.
Here is a overview and demo of the capabilities. Also separates your workflow.

Replace duckduckgo with startpage (owner of duckduckgo sells your data, see /g/ wiki), and then don't select the US servers in the settings page. Not sure where the EU servers are located, so it's probably safest to use the Asian ones.

i had to switch from noscript to umatrix, too much fucking clicking and waiting for the page to refresh with noscript desu senpai

Are video games the single most important driver of technology development?
Is there anything more important than video games?
>>57622730
There are lots of scientific research applications that benefit from technological advancement, rarely in the GPU sector but faster CPUs are always welcome.
We might reach a point where CPUs are so fast and so cheap we can just cure cancer like it's nothing. Shit like folding@home will save our race, so um yeah I suppose.

You have a good point.
Hi guys, I started the same thread in /sci/ and I was told to ask it here, so I hope you can help:
Hi guys do you know any online course or do you have tips for getting good at programming with Java?
I have always been good with maths, but I don't get programming at all. It belongs to one of my courses for my study. I'm afraid I won't pass it, because it is not intuitive for me at all and I don't have a good professor
So guys, how can I get good at programming (preferably at Java or Pytyon right now)?
I learned the basics here: http://mooc.fi/courses/2013/programming-part-1/
>>57622677
No. Go away. Programming is not something you learn in between coffee breaks from an online course. Technically you can but your skills will be shit. Stop making a mockery of the field by thinking your bootcamp memes churn out proper programmers.
This website has lots of links:
http://programming-motherfucker.com
Otherwise, look at free online courses at websites like codecademy and Coursera.
And if you only need to know basic shit, learn Python instead. Python is basically designed to be My First Programming Language, so there are tons of resources for it.

Build 5 micro robots who are communicating which eatch other over a simple wireless protokoll and a controll software on your pc with a machine learning algo. Then you have a small but intelligent robot swarm.

I guess that won't fit into 1kB

samsung make their own panels, only LG make their own as well (proprietary OLED)
the rest of the TV brands you see buy their panels from them

You'd be surprised at the amount of BOE/Hydis, AU Optronics and LG panels one would find inside Samsung monitors and/or TVs... Maybe for the top-tier models they use their own, but for the 22-24 inch range it's quite the potluck.

Nothing, because the UK doesn't control the internet. The US controls the internet and American laws apply to the whole internet.
Are you still wasting lifetime by typing admin passwords all day? Picture very much related.
Separating privileges, i.e using a non-admin account and escalating only when needed, seems to be something everyone agrees on. I can roughly understand why it's important on every system : prevent an attacker from modifying the system and taking complete control of the machine, and on shared systems, prevent a user's mistake from propagating to the others.
However, on a personal computer, all the data I care about is in my user folder, which is accessible without admin rights by every program running on the computer. Basically, if a malware runs, I've lost, be it with admin rights or not. All the damage can be done without admin rights.
