hey /g/ please help me decide on a new notebook.

Currently I still have a Dell Latitude 6420 and while it is still plenty of fast for productivity, I love the keyboard, I love the super convenient docking station, but it weighs a ton. Like an actual ton (2,4kg or 5.3 lbs). Also it can't even run League of Legends.

Now I will have to go on business trips twice a year for a couple months and I will be staying in a hotel room in a questionable country, so I will be taking the laptop with me pretty much all the time and would really like to play some Rocket League and occasionally League of Legends in the evenings.

I'm sure a GTX 960M will be plenty so I figured I'd go with Dell XPS 15 (9550), since I could also get the thunderbolt dock and have a very similar experience to my aging Latitude.
Originally I liked the Asus Zenbook (UX501), but I don't think I'd like the glossy screen.

But now with the advent of desktop GPUs in notebooks, I could even play demanding games on something like the Asus RoG Strix GL502.

TL:DR: is it wasteful to get a 960m, when you could have a desktop 1060 instead? Asus GL502, Asus UX501 or Dell XPS 15? Which would you get and why?

So I'm a landlord right?

Just allowed for a Sysadmin to sublet one my rooms

Now get this, I use a VPN but don't really turn it on because all the IPs are usually blocked on here.

Is there anything else I should be worried about?

Seems like bullshit, if you have a 6700k and GTX 1080, no 4k netflix for you. You MUST have a kabylake CPU.

Sure but most people pay for netflix anyway, would be nice if I could watch 4k content with my GTX 1080 and 6700k since I dont plan on upgrading anytime soon.

Now im forced to pirate.

Because in the IT area, freedom wise, he is the man.
How do you not get this, OP? Do you live under a rock?

Does /g/ agree that this is the only proper way to learn programming? I quote a post from stackexchange:

>
accepted
I usually prescribe the same sequence for anyone who wants to learn programming. It's very theoretical, but it lays a good foundation. It should take three or four months of fulltime study, but programming isn't something you learn overnight.

>If you can't get through this sequence, you're not going to be able to program, so you might as well give up now.

>Code, by Charles Petzold.

>The C Programming Language, K&R

>The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, Abelson and Sussman.

The full post is here: http://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/96504/how-can-i-teach-a-bright-person-with-no-programming-experience-how-to-program

Is this really the best or the only way to learn?

Right now I'm learning C# directly, making small projects, basically learning by "trial and error"... but I'm thinking to stop it and follow this guy's advice.

Thoughts?

No.

I'm gonna get a thinkpad and I'm wondering if i should get the X220 or the T420. Which one would be the most bang for my buck?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Used T420 off ebay. So cheap
>>
>>57633218
x220 for god tier battery life and portability, you can use m sata drive and standard hdd or ssd. Look for IPS screens only
t420 it's not bigger but makes up for a really nice/cheap desktop replacement and you can have two hdds. Also check on the screens. Both cases avoid TN panels like the fucking plague.
Both machines let you use eGPU if you need/want to.
>>
>>57633390
Not op but what is considered a decent price range for T420 with i5 and 1600x900 screen on ebay?

Don't think so.

Why do they keep pushing their SSD performance into the extreme? Their new SSDs can do 3.1GB/s read and 2.2GB/s write, a lot faster in both read and write than the previously leading Samsung 950 Pro M.2 drive. That's really overkill. Are they laying groundwork for something? They had to make their own custom controller for these SSDs too to achieve those speeds, which is why they may as well solder them simplifying manufacturing in because no one is making anything else compatible anyway. Why though, whats the point in these super fast SSD speeds?

Computer hard drives have always been the bottleneck ( at least for me ). I am just now starting to get interested in the new NVMe Samsung 960. I have an 840 Pro that I have had for a couple years now, and that 1 part just makes my entire computer run so much smoother. I can't wait for a new build with a PCIx SSD.

So why is gentoo or solus better than arch linux?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Gentoo has USE flags. Solus has KevinNet.
>>
>>57632775
Gentoo is amazing. I can have multiple conflicting versions of packages, or 64 and 32 bit libraries at once. And it's all fine because the programs that depend on specific architectures or specific versions of programs are compiled from source, so portage just links them with the version it knows it depends on.

See https://devmanual.gentoo.org/general-concepts/slotting/ and https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2015-03-28-true-multilib.html

If you've ever had to deal with dependency issues with packages you'll know why this is awesome.

Also being able to manually include (or exclude) certain features from any package or your kernel is extremely useful. For example, I was able to simply remove the SSL heartbeat extension and recompile my packages when the heartbleed vuln came out.

Did I even mention Portage?
>Portage works without any external repo.
>Portage supports using llvm icc etc to build with.
>Portage supports distcc.
>Portage supports slotting of dependencies.(multiple versions of python ruby gtk etc)
>Portage supports multiple kernels BSD Fedora debian etc.
>Portage can thread package installs and downloads

Meanwhile, with Arch
>overzealous autistic fan boys
>"you'll learn how Linux REALLY works!" When it's literally just configuring a package manager and letting scripts do the rest
>offers nothing that minimal net installs already offered for other distros don't
>muh bleeding edge packages!! when you can just install directly from the upstream source in any distro
>only reason to use it is the aur, which is full of broken and unmaintained packages and isn't monitored at all, most "packages" are just a bash script to download the package and it's install script from GitHub
>aur is far worse than Open Build Service, which actually lets you package binaries and programs for multiple distros
It's not the worst distro, but there's nothing it offers that makes it worth using over any other distros and it has the worst fucking user base.
>>
