Hey /g/ I want to learn how to program so my question here is what languages should i learn first. Python or Visual Basic? any other advice would be great also thanks!

Honestly just learn C. It's not a scary language. The only people who say "hurrrr C is too hard 4 beginers" are retarded college dropouts. The same type of people who would drop out of engineering school because "OMG calculus is soooo difficult!" Just install Linux and read some good books. If you have even a modicum of intelligence, and you don't give up at the slightest sign of difficulty, you'll survive.
>>
>>57680647
Thanks for the advise, i will do that but currently all i have is a laptop so i doubt it can do alot
>>
>>57680590
Mostly it doesn't matter what you learn first, but vb, even vb.net, is pretty awful.

Learn lua, python, ruby, c, or c#, if you have no taste. There are literally dozens of other languages in common use, and hundreds of obscure ones. You should learn more than one, even if You never use it. Learning more languages exercises the thinking necessary to write good code.

Monks wear hair-shirts so the constant discomfort distracts them from earthly pleasures, much like some CS people program in lisp. Weight lifters use their muscles to the point of failure, by doing something in the most isolating, difficult way possible. Also, this is why some people program in brainfuck.

You won't become a great programmer by only doing things one way.

Again, there was one of that annoying Firefox hate threads. Let's look at the positive side now. Stuff like Full themes and Ricing will finally disappear with killing XUL extensions and XUL as a whole.

Let's be honest.. if you love to constantly rearrange buttons or pick month for month a nice fjll theme... you are... a gay pussie!

Thanks god Mozilla, god may forever protect you of all that worthless haters here and everywhere!

Yeah, For once Mozilla does the right thing. Can't wait for a clean, fast and stable browser which is not slowed down by old code from the past decades!
>>
XUL is the only reason I still use Firefox. If they drop it, so do I.

Why are gentooman so elitist?

>>57680525
We're not. You're just to dumb to realize that.
>>
All Linux users are generally very elitist about their made up knowledge and programming skills or whatever it is. Linux is still the opposite of a user friendly OS. You need to know code to keep it updated or install it properly. And even when you don't, there's no one to help you.
Being complicated is not the point of a computer, the idea is to make it simple for everyone, programmers, techies, gamers, grandpas or people with disabilities.

The three big corporations Linux users call evil (Apple. Microsoft and now Google) have so far did a LOT to make the computer simple and easy for everybody, and hires a wide diversity of programmers, analysts, sociologists regardless of their skin color, gender or class.

Now look at who develops Linux versions.... Bearded white guys who does it as a hobby, talking about code all day and rarely meet real people.

That's the Linux problem and this is why no one will ever use Linux. It's zero social.

Why can't these guys just make back ups and have someone else restore it?

Seems like a waste to create a whole new site/database when shutdowns happen.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
People are already starting to realize that private trackers are an absolute joke for this very reason. Many ex-what.cd users are migrating their torrents to rutracker
>>
I mean more broadly, weren't there off-site backups for WhatCD / OiNK / etc.? Or did they just run it at a single host and assume there would never be a takedown?

And if there are, why not just hand it over to new ownership?
>>
>>57680394
Private tracker admins and users are literally retarded.

Should I buy a Laser Printer? If so, which one. Toner costs like a mother fucker and but I don't want some $99 job that will break in 6 months.

Looking to print around 400+ pages per month. Color is a nice to have, but not required.

Advice?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>57680089
that's not many pages, color still seems to be inkjet while B&W is toner, heck we use those cheap 1102w HP's and I have users that do 500 pages a day and they've work for years. (think 1109w is new version, same toner etc)
>>
>>57680089
I would say get ink tank printers, they are cheap to refill and print quite quickly after warming up.
>>
>>57680534

OP HERE

Thanks for the comment. I am looking at those right now. I never thought about ink tank printers.

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/24/firefox-will-only-support-web-extensions-by-the-end-of-2017 - it is a real hilarious to read that comments of Parker Lewis... performance and Webextensions are everything, customization, features and themes are nothin

Parker Lewis.... hidden Mozilla employee who tries to persuade others that simplicity and minimalism is more worthy than features...

What for a hilarious guy :D

Posting those comments anyway:

>I don't know that for a fact but I doubt Tab Mix Plus will not be WebExtensions-ready in a year. I'd be surprised if any of the popular add-ons was not ported over.

>You don't appear to have the full picture. The move to WebExtensions isn't about Chrome. If anything, compatibility with Chrome extensions is a nice side benefit. The real reasons have been discussed at leeeeeength with article and comments here

>Actually I'm rather amazed by Mozilla engineers and the developer community. They really manage to pick the best of the best of routes in situations where (like anything in life) there is no perfect path. I wish native.js was the winning proposal though, because it was this close to being perfect. I hope some people are pushing for it and poking Giorgio Maone because currently it's another proposal that is being implemented because of Andy McKay, which is less good in terms of having your cake and eating it.

>You got it wrong. What strikes me is how clearly it shows that you are missing a number of key information points that should change your conclusion completely, would you be aware of them.

>Just re-read yourself: All your statement is based on a unidimensional reading that was produced by one single key information point. So of course you go on and conclude what you do.

>See my earlier comment to you that point to an article with comments that have more insight. You can also check project Quantum, which hasn't been addressed in the linked article. (Only indirectly whenever Servo is mentioned)

>Firefox is definitely not Chrome, nor is it going towards Chrome. That conclusion is a mistake not due to stupidity but lack of information.

>I kind of worry for Palemoon. What will happen to them when all main browsers are on the performance level of Firefox post-Quantum ? Ten years from now, the web should have adapted to these extremely fast and concurrent browsers, so Palemoon and similar browsers should have trouble running many sites smoothly. They will have to either switch their engine or (doubtful) implement their own version of "Quantum". Which in the case of Palemoon, will break all deep-hooking add-ons. WebExtensions won't break.

>I guess we'll see.

After that comment he posted a wall of text.

I'm learning C, just started two days ago. Got my old Dell D160 up and going because I'm poorer than shit. Got Hilbert's book on C for one dollar from a thrift shop a few days ago, now i'm well on my way to become as awesome as some here. It'll take probably a year before I get good but be encouraged OP. I'm a always depressed and I'm constantly battling with mental issues but It's the first time I've sat for any amount of time and written something. So be encouraged. if a loony like me can do it, so can you. And i'm 43 by the way with a history of mental problems But this is the first time I've been able to finally accomplish something that I see for myself. And I'm unhealthier than most because of a life time of drug abuse. But all that's in the past. I can see myself getting married in three years if all goes well.

What are some of your favourite programming/computing novels and textbooks?

Subjects:
- Languages
- Networking & Security
- Computer Engineering
- Logic & Arithmetic
- Hacking
- Fiction (i.e. cyberpunk)

Been reading pic related for learning C and it's pretty gud. Very brief and concise.

Thats it? lmao there are like 73 more books as important as those that you shoukd own, kid.

Anyway back to novels:

Hackers and painters
Masters of doom
Mythical man month

Also theres like a 280 pages pdf book floating around with nothing but John Carmack interviews from 1993-2002, really fun to read.

Also "programmers at work", not to be confused with "coders at work" wich is fucking shit.

Why not list those 73 books, "kid"?

Have been feeling pain in the upper side of my right wrist for some days now.
I've started using the mouse with the left but I have shit accuracy with it.

So...
what's the best way to navigate 4chan without the mouse?

What about general web browsing?

Does anyone here live a keyboard-only life or is close to that?

Actually yes, but it's pretty expensive and I wanted to see if I manage to solve the problem without having to buy one.

Also I've been wanting to use the keyboard more for every task for a while, browsing is one of the few things that still relies to much on the mouse, especially for clicking links/selecting text.

Let's install Gentoo together /g/
