the reason the culture has gone to shit since then is because we have all those powerful, modern things. Computing power, network access, bandwidth, storage space, the reason why the masses invaded is because these things stopped being scarce.

Why is screentearing such a problem in Linux? Is it because Xorg and Xconfig are antiquated now?

Also Compiz or Compton?

Explain to me why the GPL is evil, /g/.

The GPL has saved code time and again from being sacked by corporations. The GPL gives you the possibility to defend yourself if someone takes your code without publishing their own. That is something that BSD does not provide - there are so many projects out there that use BSD code, and the programmers are not even given feedback about it. They are being ripped off while the FreeBSD-Foundation has to ask for donations.

Some two-bit company wants to use your GPL code, but does not want to negotiate with you for re-licensing it. They can tell you to suck dick, and they can just go ahead and develop their own code. Apple did that with Samba, which is GPL3. And now we can all laugh at Apple and the idiots who keep buying Apple products because their code base is a train wreck filled with security holes (and don't even try to deny that; just take a look at their track record: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202253).

So, please explain to me why you think that the GPL is evil. Because I do not understand it.

Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Once again what do you think of this for my SSD will the higher read and write speeds be worth it or would I be better off with something slower with higher capacity?

Will Android ever be able to compete with iOS? What it looks like right now, they cannot cope with the device fragmentation and the operating system lacks thereof.

if there is no suction between 3 and 4, then 3. if there is suction between 3 and 4, then 4.

now regarding your other question: there are different reasons for someone to use the one or the other. i used to be an iOS user, but the filesharing between programs and over networks was so minimal that i could not use it, so i went with android.

android fragmentation is not really an issue, from kitkat on most system stuff became 'dynamic'

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Reposting my comment from the last thread before we got moved here :)

Is anything in the current ThinkPad lineup worth buying? I'm looking specifically at the T460, T560, or X260.

Would be used primarily for working from home (Excel, Adobe, online databases etc.) and possibly some light gaming (Skyrim, TF2, WoW etc.)

Post your favorite radio and radio accessories!

Also, Is the Baofeng UV-5R an overhyped radio, or does it promise what people have said about it? I need a radio for going hiking as well as communicating with my friends on the go.
41 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>57715960
It broadcasts on harmonics quite a bit.
Included antenna is a piece of shit, but the NA-771 or NA-701 are a cheap decent improvement.
Programming in a repeater offset and tone is a pain in the ass because the menus suck.
If the price is right though.

Also, are you a ham? If not the value of the radio goes down a significantly because aren't a lot of frequencies you can legally use this guy on.
Using it on frs/gmrs frequencies won't piss anyone off enough to start trying to locate you.
Spoilers: Hams with nothing better to do hide and locate transmitters for fun.
>>
>>57715960
>Is the Baofeng UV-5R an overhyped radio

The hype is not because they're good.

The hype is because they're cheap and often good enough.
>>
So let me get this straight, I can't just tune into frequencies and listen in without being a licensed operator? How do they find me if I do t say anything, does their hardware show how many connected users or something.

t. Bought a baofend for 50 dollarydoos

That's nice buddy, but single-threaded performance is still the name of the game.
Kaby Lake is gonna set new records in single-threaded benchmarks, while it matches a 6-core in multi-threaded with only 4 cores.
