Hey /g/ ents I'm about to head off to college next year and I'm wanting to have a decent PC when I head off, and sense today is cyber Monday is today I was hoping someone would maybe give me some say $400 builds on new egg. I'm not very knowledgeable about what's good and what not in computers so I was hoping you all could help me out thanks!

What's the best /g/adget to receive for Christmas 2016 (no greater than $450)? I was going to ask for a drone but realistically I might as well buy it with my own money.
A dragon dildo
A gun to shoot yourself
a rope
I'm considering buying some studio monitors. I'd like to also get stands for them but I'm working with a budget. If one of you kind anons could talk me through some shopping points I'd be much appreciative!
>inb4 not your personal review site
I'm not asking for a review, I just wanna know what sort of things I should be looking for. For example, I always search for earbuds with a frequency response of 5hz or 8hz to 24khz because even though people claim you can't hear anything below 20hz or above 20khz, I swear earbuds with a wider frequency response sound better.
So, what should I look for?
>>57741455
Frequency range means nothing, you could say it does 1hz-30000hz and you wouldn't be wrong, it's the frequency RESPONSE graph you want to look at, where the low end drops off, where the high end drops off, and how flat things are in between those points.
But looking at graphs isn't the way to shop if you don't know what you want, look up what people like (Yamaha HSwhatevers, KRK rokit whatevers, mackie MRwhatevers, just look some things up) and then try to narrow things down after that.
I have mackie MR5 mk2s, they're good, great sound but the low end rolls off quick and at the highest volumes (like playing for a house party) the frequencies seem to crowd each other, probably due to being only 5inch cones; I'd recommend a 6 or even 8 inch pair of monitors so you have ample lows. I'd recommend big monitors over small monitors + subwoofer ANY day.
Get a good DAC or audio interface or USB mixer, and those triangular-base-shaped monitor stands for $70 a pair

Thanks do much anon!

how about these?
This is my first time building a PC. I'll probably use it for:
Light gaming (Mainly LOL, Starcraft, and emulators)
Web Dev. & coding.
Ratings/comments please.

Alright, so what do you /g/tards actually think about solus? I know there's plenty of shitposts about this distro but how do you think it'll shape up to be in the future? It seems to do well in a few aspects and struggle in others. I personally think it might turn out to be a really good distro if they can get their shit together. Future looks bright though, what would it take to make Solus a top tier distro like Ubuntu or Fedora?
The good
>Independent Distro
>new package manager
>seemingly great performance optimizations
>budgie (can be a con as well but they have support for other DEs)
>rolling release
The bad
>piss poor package availability
>Small team of developers
>no wayland
>rolling release
is this Windows 10?
>>57741109
just another linux distro
i don't see why /g/ is so obsessed with shilling distributions. they are all the same shit just managed differently
Pros: it exists
Cons: so does lost of stuff that is better documented
Neutral: its the same shit
>>57741109
It's semi-rolling and that's a good thing. No outdated as shit packages holding you back when you're developing, while less chance of it breaking on you. Still, Solus is a meme distro as it stands.
Just got some interest from an IT Manager for a Network Admin position,
how do I not fuck this up?
No Certs / Degree.
tell him if he hires you, you'll pay him 20 thousand dollars
suck his dick
google everything
Are there any risks to overclocking a 144hz monitor?
Google says that it can reduce the lifespan of the monitor slightly and void the warranty, but since the overclock is done with software I don't even see how a monitor company could detect it.
I just want to try it for shits and giggles. I know it is completely unnecessary.

I think your bread is slightly stale.
>>57742370
That's a fruitcake, fruitcake.
>>57741064
would have been better as shrooms
But sure op, you could break the monitor.

heading to college this spring and wanted to buy a laptop to take to class with me. Main reason for buying the laptop is to email, take notes, bring around campus, complete assignments. I was thinking the ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54. any advice would be appreciated.
For handwritten notes, a Surface with OneNote is a bliss.
>>57740784
Don't use a laptop to take notes it's proven to be worse than handwriting them.
>>57740784
Isn't that overkill if you only want to do that sort of stuff?
What are you getting from Santa-san this year /g/?
Shut up bitch

http://www.techworm.net/2016/05/tor-vpn-users-labeled-criminals-hacked-spied-fbi-new-law.html
So the US is introducing a new law that will allow the FBI to hack and search any computer found using a VPN or Tor.
>The newly approved rule change by the U.S. Supreme Court will allow FBI to search and seize any computer around the world, found to be using privacy tools like VPN or Tor. The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday quietly approved a rule change to Rule No.41, that would allow a federal magistrate judge to issue a search and seizure warrant for any target using anonymity software like Tor to browse the internet.
>Rule 41 will become a law in December if the U.S. Congress doesnt take any legislative action against it. As said in our previous article, the new ruling bestows enormous powers to FBI to be able to search computers remotely—even if the bureau doesn’t know where that computer is located—if a user has anonymity software installed on it.
>The rule changes, which the FBI said were necessary to combat cyber crime, come amid escalating tensions between the intelligence community and technology and privacy advocates, and just a day after the U.S. House of Representatives advanced a bill that would require the government to obtain a probable cause warrant from a judge before seizing data stored with tech companies such as Facebook, Google, and Dropbox.
Only criminals need that shit anyways
How will they do it? Will they make ISPs flag certain IPs that are known to be Tor exit nodes or VPNs? Will they analyze the traffic for Tor/(Open)VPN traffic?
>>57740692
All the hacks they used on Tor users already depend on those Tor users being stupid and leaving JS enabled
