Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

how can I tell whether a given T400 has a CCFL or a LED backlight screen?
I need to install windows on my x230, should I go win7 or 10? Got 10 EDU working on my main machine dualbooted and its pretty fucking great, but its running on a 16gb 6700k. what do?
I have an x230. Theoretically, would one be able to wire a second internal mSATA connector to the SATA pins on the dock connector? Is there enough room anywhere to store an mSATA SSD connected this way?
>>58098266
7. I had nothing but problems with 10. So, so many problems. Primary thing that made me go back to 8.1 was a broken fucking taskbar (it would crash very, very frequently).

Has anyone had a professor that made them dumber?
>>58097690
No but I think this post did
>>58097690
Yes our professor had us extend java classes to be nodes in a linked list instead of writing a generic list for all types we had to extend each class and add a next and prev pointer. What kind of faggotry is this 80's style c programming practices?
>>58097690
I read that as 'the art of a programming'
Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.
Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

/g/, I've been using Appchan X on Firefox for years, and I can't take the high memory usage anymore. It jumps to over 1gb after just a few minutes of casual browsing. I know the problem is mostly Appchan since it's not nearly that bad without it. However, I'm very dependent on it for browsing by now. I technically have more than enough ram to deal with this, but the problem is that Firefox gets really slugging and buggy as memory usage increases, even affecting unrelated sites like youtube.
Is there a similar extension that doesn't leak memory all over the place? And alternatively, is there a Firefox fork that can deal with memory properly?
>>58097458
4chan X
>>58097609
But before making this thread, I tried looking for info on google, and I've seen many people using 4chanX report the same problem that I have. Is there any specific fork of 4chanX that doesn't leak as much?

Looking for new headphones as I'd like to avoid gaming headsets.
What's /g/'s opinion on the Phillips SHP9500?
I'd be pairing it with one of those Vmoda BoomPro mics that attach to it.

I take it you have not mastered the art of installing a flash player plugin on Linux, or just getting Chrome (which has the player baked into it)?
>html5 is garbage
HTML5+JS is better than any sort of browser plugin for doing video, animations, etc... The problem is that many porn videos are still encoded as flash.

hi /g/, I've never programmed before, but am taking a class on PLC's.
I took a course in motor logic, and it's really my first experience with this type of thinking (desu never really looked at math this way, just plug&chug)
Anyway, when I finish my PLC course will I be fucked on learning how to code for a PC? Thx
Going to college to learn any computer related degree is literally a scam.
>>58097438
plc isn't a computer
and i'm not paying for anything so those high up jobs requiring a bachelors well I'm doing a token degree
Don't you use GRAFCET for that?
So visiting my sister in Brit-Bong Island, went to watch some porn and..
I can't view things because the ISPs, who, pressured from the government, say I'm not allowed to? I have to give them either:
-my credit info
Or
-a picture of my fucking ID
What the fuck England? You crazy Orwellian-ass country. How long until this is extended to any websites that voice opinions considered "bad" by the establishment?
Will things become like this in the US when trump does away with Net Neutrality?
>>58097219

>>58097219
>Will things become like this in the US when trump does away with Net Neutrality?
yeah, duh
I still can't fathom how anyone could possibly be against rules that forbid ISPs from hindering you in consuming whatever network usage they deem bad. I mean wtf. That's like if tomorrow people voted the red cross should be forced to drop its stance of neutrality and just ignore one side or the other when they help in warzones. Only executive pricks looking to make a buck profit from that, nobody else.
You're full of shit OP, no UK ISP does that.

Except that it isn't.
So I wish developers would just support all three major platforms with any software that they create natively so we didn't need it? Yes.
Do I think developers are going to do that or would I rather not have a client at all for a specific tool than have an Electron based one? No.
Get over yourself.

Torrents download faster if you watch them
>>58096983
yeah, grass grows faster if you look at it too
>>58096983
>Torrents download faster if you watch them- 0 post shown.
Don't think so.
But here's a mindfuck! Torrents that are stalled tend to download faster if you have another torrent that's being downloaded and it's going faster.
I've observed the above SO MANY TIMES! Something is definitely going on.
I believe that this is because ISP deep packet inspection (and maybe throttling??) is the cause of the slow-down in the first place and when you have a faster torrent, something changes in their algorithm.
>>58097049
holy fuck i'm not crazy, definitely noticed this, seems to happen on some trackers more than on others though
