Anybody else disappointed in Oculus?
Ok I'm not too disappointed in using it in fact some games are totally amazing in VR but I do have a problem.
It costs quite a lot for the headset which I plug into my PC and discover my video card is way under powered to be used.
As such what is the Rift actually doing for the money I spent on it? It's a couple of little displays and a set of headphones rammed into a plastic headset with a motion sensor added.
It's my video card doing all the work is it not?
To be honest I can afford it all easily but I feel disappointed with the hype given how little the hardware itself actually does for the money outlay.
Thoughts?

Ah shaddap
VR is a meme right now. Give it 10 years to become more cheaper. Its pointless to buy a VR headset aside from muh google cardboard unless you got plenty of money to throw.

you're paying for:
software support
ergonomics
relatively high DPI screens with fast response times and "Low persistence"
that said, it's still Gen 1 for retail units. the screen door effect is still present and early adopters are paying for future development
I have $400ish to spend on a new monitor. I got a 1080 and i've been stuck with my old asus 1080p 60hz monitor for 5 years now
Do I go with 144hz, 4k, 1440p. I have no idea what is worth investing in.
Depends what your rig is and what you'll be doing. Unfortunately they're aren't any 144hz 4K IPS monitors yet (fingers crossed for CES), so maybe just hold on to your money for a couple months.
If you want something now, I think ASUS has a 1440p 1ms IPS 144hz monitor.
144hz plus 1440p plus gsync
Asus PG278Q, refurbished for $500
4K/60fps maxed is unrealistic even with a 1080
>>58125251
Can't rember the model but dell has a 1440p 144hz monitor in the 500s $ I believe, Asus is more expensive.
And yes it's worth it
>use laptop on lap
>watch twitch & few other tabs on chrome
>CPU&MB temp hits 75 C
why do we call them laptops?
first for me
also anime sucks
You're probably using windows 10 and google chrome on a shitty toshiba satellite right?
Switch to gentoo with --march=native, browser to palemoon and you'll be much cooler.

after the "dell laptop set rich business man's pants on fire, army of lawyers came to aid" in the 2000s, many brands technically call them "notebooks"
What is the best OS for older laptops. My laptop is HP 6930p. Its Core 2 Duo, 4gb ram, 4500mhd. I installed Windows 7 but it really lags alot.
I've been trying out debian netinst with lxde on a atom n270 with 2gb of ram, otherwise windows xp works.

Decided to try out Firefucks again after a 3 or so year break
>fonts finally don't look like jaggy arse
>multicore support
>not a laggy piece of shit like I remember it
The stupid animations here and there are annoying, but they are in areas rarely used anyway (ie, entering Fullscreen has this super slow retarded animation).
At first thought it was shit, but realised no Ad blocker or Ghostery - actually amazing how laggy websites can be without these.

full-screen-api.transition-duration.leave
Change both of these to 0 0

You don't need Ghostery. Just get uBlock Origin and enable tracking filters (if they aren't already).

So, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I have searched google for days, tried everything I could find but have come up empty as far as answers.
I got a Raspberry Pi 3 starter kit for my kid for christmas, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to make the sound work via the HDMI connection (also no sount from the headphone jack either really). I have tried several terminal commands, but not luck.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to get this thing up and running. Any help would be greatly appreciated
are you installing osmc?
>>58125161
Should i be? I'm honestly a bit of a noob with linux
>>58125161
Just looked into it, it looks like that's a media player, I've been testing audio using youtube videos Sould I be installing that instead?
I want to write my own encrypted messaging app(something similar to signal and whatsapp). I have a little programming experience but nothing major. How long should this take?
This question is way too technical for /g/. If it's not gaymen or shilling your prefered smartphone this board is essentially useless.
>>58125610
His question is too fucking ambiguous for even the smartest engineer on earth.
"How long should this take?"
Seriously? SERIOUSLY?
There are books written about project schedule estimation, companies spend millions and years in order to improve their time estimation accuracy.
And you think that someone could answer OP?
Asking how long is a software project going to take is probably the hardest question when it comes to software engineering.
And guess what, at the initial stage of a project, even the best companies understand they can be wrong by a factor of 2. And that's with all the system requirements taken care of.
And OP is asking how "an encrypted messaging app(something similar to signal and whatsapp)" is going to take? Seriously? Never mind the fact that one of the best cryptographers on earth did both Signal and WhatsApp's encryption.
Jesus you're an absolute retard. Fuck off.

What can you even do on Linux aside from ricing your desktop and pretending that you're a programmer?

Hey goys. I saw a good thread a few days ago about microphones and recording equipment. A lot of people in the threads were bashing on Blue microphones as being the Apple of the microphone world. Average tier product with great advertising. My Blue snowball just crapped out so I'm looking for something to replace it with. I Mainly use it for VoIP and voice overs on game videos I record for my dumb friends. Any recommendations? Also general microphone/recording thread I suppose.
BM 800
>>58125095
I've heard the BM800 needs spooky energy. Are there any recommended low cost phantom power supplies to go along with it? Assuming the BM800/arm/phantom power cost around 50USD, are there any microphones in that price range that are better?
I recently bought the SF-920, it's a $15 microphone, if you use it with an USB sound adapter it just works
How hard would it be to put a Raspberry Pi 3 inside of a DS Lite case?

very easy
>take case

Look for yourself. He had to enlarge the top portion to fit the top screen in the build.
Clamshell cases, an rpi do not make.
Apparntly zeros fit nice in original GBA cases and Gameboys... especially gameboys, being nice and roomy.

Do what I did, go to community college. I had zero income so the Pell Grant paid for my entire tuition each year.
I got a internship between semesters at one of the Big 4 because they feel bad for community college students (SJW shit) and recruit a decent amount out of them now.
Obviously only got my associates, but with that and my CCNA, Security+, A+, etc. I got whole doing the course I got hired quick. Won't make as much as the CS grads do, but you won't be poor either.
Can anyone tell me who this is?
