god damn right!

I thought that systemd was supposed to speed up boot times?
How do you explain my boot time (counting from grub to slim/lightdm) to be 57 seconds on Xubuntu - systemd,
and just 27 seconds with Gentoo - OpenRC, on my Lenovo B575e Craptop?

Is systemd just a meme botnet?

That's funny. On Solus it boots in only 5 seconds.

Maybe your distro is just a piece of shit.

Maybe come back when you have a meaningful desktop with actual stuff installed instead of some super minimal autsm garbage you call "software"

Hey /g/eeks
Im a pretty young person looking to become a system adminstrator in a few years. I havent started education program for that yet since i cant yet. My question is would it be possible for a person like me to learn how to do the job so well that i could practicly work as an system admin without ever having done the education program? Not that i want to do the job but i i just want to learn how to do it so i am ready and ahead of athors whenever i do start the education in a year or 2.

There's no such thing as 'sysadmin' anymore, they are called "Site Reliability Engineers" because we cloud bullshit now.

You want:
- K&R
- The Unix Programming Environment (old book, teaches you awk/sed/grep yes this is still used)
- The Go Programming Language by Kernigham because all 'SRE' is done in Golang now
- Go on libgen.io and get any Devops book, there's plenty of recent ones.
- Get Google's "Site Reliability Engineering" book that just came out a few months ago.

Everything is Heroku, AWS (garbage), ect cloud based bullshit so stringing together Ubuntu Servers for the most part, running Docker images, running Kubernetes to string together images, shit like NixOS or GuixSD so you can have predictable builds on a server and do rollbacks, ect.

Start with NoStarchPress books on Linux
https://www.nostarch.com/howlinuxworks2

Then do Zed Shaw's Python the Hard way (free)
https://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/

Then get K&R (libgen.io)
Then get The Unix Programming Environment
Then get The Go Programming Language (gopl.io)
Then get Devops books, Docker books, Google's SRE book.

Congrat's you're SRE (hint, apply to compose.io)
>>
>>58159468
Hey thanks for the informative comply but you left me a bit confused. So i should start with the howlinuxworks2 and follow all the chapters till done and then zed shaws python? and get those athor thing u listed under there and learn from those. And are u sure there is no such thing as a system admin no more? The education program i want to sign up for is called system administrator and Site Reliability Engineers just seems much different. But then again im a retard at this so please correct me on anything i say wrong.
>>
>>58159530
Yes you should do exactly that. Load up a VM, install Debian or Ubuntu server and read that book (libgen.io is your friend, all free).

There are a few sysadmins still left around but they expect you to know systems level programming esp Python and Golang. You can learn this. K&R = The C Programming Language Second Edition by Kernighan and Ritchie. Zed Shaw's python book assumes you know nothing

How is the t420s in 2016? Is $500CAD too much?

I'm considering getting this model:
http://www.laptopcloseout.ca/lenovo-thinkpad-t420s

Right now I have a C720 running arch and I like it but the keyboard is a little cramped and I run out of memory a little too quickly.

I bought my t520 for $430 a couple years ago. So yes, $500 seems like too much.
>>
>>58159859

This. The t420s holds up well with an SSD and 8gb+ of ram. I wouldn't spend more than 200usd on one though.

FleaBay is a much better place to buy any ThinkPads.

all i can speak on is chromecast, but even with a smart tv, it allows you to project your phone or computer to the tv which is as useful as you can find applications for

remember like 3 months ago when AMD "totally owned the PC reasonable 1080p60 any game benchmark purchasing market" cause they had a "$200" (MSRP that was always $50 over) GPU RX400

then Nvidia put out the 1060 within the same exact price

and now the 1050 and 1050ti is half that and can also max any game at 1080p60

now they're left gloating about (only posting a few stats) beating a 1333 socket Intel CPU which is literally 4 socket generations old now

>people literally praising them for 95TPD in 2017 because they're showing specs compared to a 2011 intel PC socket design

So according to you:
>6900K is 4 generations old
>1060 3GB isn't overpriced compared to the 470 (matches its performance) or the 480 4GB (trashes its performance)
>1060 6GB isn't matched with 480 8GB in Dx11, or beat in Dx12
Topkek :^)

Also, please show me the 1050Ti maxing AAA games at 1080p60. Must be a solid 60 too.

So I'm building a PC for work, and I'm wondering whether to get the 3GB or 6GB gtx1060?

It will run 2x 1080p screens and 1x1600p screen.

It will be just work stuff (programming, etc), however I'd love to get in a bit of gaming on the 1440p every now and again. Obviously I'm not going to be playing bf1 at max graphics settings or anything, probably some older games or some games like buttcraft at low settings.

So within the context of that, I'm wondering what difference double the VRAM will do?

Please consider to upgrade to 1070 or even 1080.
3 monitors, with one > HD resolution are a heavy load.
Ideally, you need a Quadro class for multi monitor, but since you are not into a rendering work or CAD, it is not a good choice for you.
