I have a garbage Alienware x51 r1 desktop. I want to change the gt 640 graphics card thats inside to a gigabyte gtx 1050 ti. It can fit properly, but I'm not too sure if the 19.5w x 12.3w external power brick will handle it.
>inb4 buy a new computer
Got this graphics card for free, I would like to keep it and see if it can work. The processor isn't bad at all, iirc it's a i5 6600 or something like that. It's just the graphics card that needs replacing.
>>58202416
19.5w x 12.3w
I mean V but whatever
>>58202458
The card has a 150 W tdp, and since it's already working your power supply should handle most cards with something in that range.

May I have this thread? I have promises I intend to keep (see pic related).
If you are new to /g/, get your Steam URL ready.
6600k or 6700k or 6850k or wait for ryzen
I am gonna upgrade my CPU and Mobo pretty soon, I am trying to make a pc that will last me a long time before I need upgrading again.
Which CPU do you think will last the longest and give me the best performance?
I got a 6700K because if I waited for next gen they'd try to shove Windows 10 down my throat even harder than they already are. They can pry Windows 7 from my cold, dead fingers.
If you don't already have a compatible mobo, I'd wait to see what Intel and AMD have cooking next year. It's not like you'll waiting that long, anyway.
Zen is looking pretty good, and the rumored i3-3750k is pretty neat too. Personally I'm gonna wait for the Zen cause either way it's going to make Intel drop their prices

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Was gonna ask about this in the SQT but since this thread is right here...
What the fuck is is.4chan.org? Why do images sometimes load from there and sometimes from good old i.4cdn.org? Especially given that is.4chan.org is dog slow for some reason?
Harlequin ichthyosis's a hell of a disease
This js fixes it for any posts that are already on the page:[].forEach.call(document.getElementsByTagName('a'), function(a) { a.href = a.href.replace('is.4chan.org', 'i.4cdn.org'); });
It won't affect any posts added by auto-update, you'll need to run it a second time for those.
Holy fuck, how did she write all of this code?

is each page like, multiple lines of code?
Or is each page a punch card or similar, so there's only 1 or 2 commands on each page?
Still impressive if it's just punch cards, it's just that if that's all lines it seems like _a lot_ for 60s computers.

But I don't get what's so funny.
Okay /g/ayboys let's see that one piece of technology that you miss more than any other. The one that was objectively perfect and no other has even held a candle to. This is mine. No product I've owned from Apple, RIM, Samsung, or LG has even been close.
This thing was comfy as FUCK.
>>58202058
That's what I'm talking about! Those great old phones or other gadgets that you would give up your current to have a up to date model in a heartbeat
I still have my 650 and I use PHEM on my Android phone to run my old Palm OS apps and I use it DAILY. My employees are also forced to use my old Palm OS software
Have an i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz with a GTX 1070.
I think it's holding back the GTX 1070 in games like GTA V and Witcher 3 where it's hitting close to 100% utilization.
What upgrade path should I follow? I can just put in a i7 3770k, but is it worth it?
A lot of games are more GPU dependent than CPU dependent. Best to upgrade the GPU
>>58202018
I already have a GTX 1070.
3770k is a beast CPU. Have one in one of my machines and it still competes with skylake CPUs without any oc. Put an 212 evo or liquid cooling and you're set.
Is there any sort of downside or negative impact of having a dual monitor setup with one connected through HDMI and the other VGA?
I've also been curious about this. Bump for a helpful answer
>>58201938
>VGA
>2016
There is absolutely no reason to use VGA.
This isn't even about Dual monitors. VGA is a fucking ancient standard, and is analogue, meaning that there will be image noise.
>>58201988
I definitely agree with you on that. Only reason is if I don't have a second HDMI cable lying around and I need to setup with VGA. This question is more just fueling my knowledge since I can take an HDMI out of something else.
How do I into electronics?
I've always been just a programmer but I see all those kool-kids do some hardware hacking with Arduinos and other microcontrollers and feel like I could learn something from that. I've always wanted to program a robot and you need to hook up some sensors and get data from that.
So, how do I learn electronics? Are there any good free video courses anyone can recommend?
>>58201877
What's a good electronics book?
I would truly mostly suggest you to start doing simple projects, since you already now how to program courses would bore you since they mostly are from the very basics of programing, as you do projects you start to learn, from how to make a H bridge to control motors to learn how you can use certain model of certain sensors since every of them has a datasheet, if you requiere a second voltage or a dc.dc converter for certains components, etc
Who knows the best online or app call spoofing service that doesn't charge
I do
So do I
>>58201875
I know a few, but I would not be so presumptuous as to suggest any are the best. Obviously, that is subjective.
Ideally, how fast should a CPU be?
>>58201842
fast
10^42 Hz
"Fast" isn't a very good way to describe CPU processing power. Depends on the task at hand as well considering what you wanted to do on the device.
I guess I would have to say as much power as you can pack into the device without it becoming redundant. Such as a processor in a TV on par with modern desktops would serve no purpose without it becoming a redundancy and waste of resources. It's more about the software limitations that can take power of the product.
