"So I see you're running GNOME... You know I'm actually on KDE myself, I know this desktop environment is supposed to be better but, you know what they say - old habits stay die hard."
"I know what you're thinking, I'm an executive, why am I even running Linux? Again, old habits."

B-but it's a hobby OS, made by commies!

I’d just like to interject for moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Hello /g/. I am in my senior year of high school and I have decided I will be learning computer science in college. The college requires a course of Python. However, I am willing to learn multiple languages. I want to learn C++ first. The thing is, I don't know where to start or what habits to build. How do I learn C++ or Python and consistently learn? What resources?
>>58205199
If you can't program in senior year of high school, studying CS is probably not the best idea
Learn C# first. C++ is too complex to start with
go for mis. you can boss around the cs and ee types without any stress.
I am almost definitely not buying this thing, however before I totally cross it off is there any macfag out there able to change my mind? BTW my last two laptops were Macs, I am typing this from a rMBP which will be sold this friday. I need a new laptop, a powerful work one however none of my software required OSX in years, some even requires me to use a Windows 7 WM. Can someone here recommend me anything that is better than this? Maybe something with a nice trackpad.
Budget is less than $3500 unfortunately nothing too crazy.
>>58205167
>Budget is less than $3500
If you're talking about that kind of money, there's far better options. Surface Book, hell even "GAMING!!!" laptops would be a better buy since they would pack more power than that puny Polaris 11 that they labelled as Radeon ""Pro"" because RX would be an insult apparently.
>>58205206
I don't really like the Surface line of laptop, looking for something with a similar keyboard/trackpad to the last rMBP. It doesn't have to be as thin, the major factor for me is the glorious Apple trackpad.
Bamp...
Thoughts on the Security Now podcast?
>>58205126
It's okay but seemingly the rest of TWiT's been going down the tube in a slow, circular fashion. Steve doesn't seem to realize that though.
Haven't listened to it or any other of Leo Laporte's netcasts in years, but I still follow some of his security teachings and I have an image of Spinrite burnt to a disc that I'd use if I had to recover data off of a corrupted harddrive.
>>58205290
I also have SpinRite but I haven't ever used it in the intended scenario of "oh shit drive's dying/not showing up WTF" yet but there were mounds of people that did and it worked so I figured what the hell.
Just found out the iPhone 6s doesn't even have image stabilisation for the camera.
Why do people pay premium price for these overhyped pieces of shit again?
>>58205053
It's called "Plus or GTFO" for a reason.
>>58205056
But isn't the point of iPhone that it's the last "good" sub 5" phone on the market?
>>58205103
Non-Plus doesn't cut it. If you're going compact, SE or GTFO.
poor Terry
>>58204788
god is perfectly just.
also get in here niggers https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdX4uJUwSFwiY3XBvu-F_-Q/live
Did Terry eventually get the mugs and shirts from that anon? Did he comment on it?
why are my idle temps so high? is this normal temps for air cooling?
>>58204731
What cpu cooling fan are you using?
>>58204731
It's a little high. Not terrible, but you could probably drop it by 10C with a better heat sink.
>>58204731
how big is your case? idling at 30-35c in an itx case.

my 1070 doesn't go higher than 65 under high load.
but then, it's a gigabyte one with 3 huge fans
I've got $2000 and I need some advice /g/. High powered laptop, craptop + desktop, or just a nice desktop?
>>58204390
$1500 on the desktop and $500 on a new ThinkPad T series
Do you need a laptop? Do you need a desktop?
Most people just use their phones nowadays.
Get a Razer Core pleb
>Buy brand new $400 phone, put case on it
>Put it in pocket
>Pull it out of pocket
>Scratch
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>58204380
What the fuck is wrong with you?
>>58204380
>$400 phone
Nigger you should gotten Oneplus X instead
My Xperia z3 seems good so far
My PSU is buzzing when the GPU is being stressed. Should I be concerned about it?
>>58204339
Just bees.
depends

On what?
How easily can someone hack your Skype account?
How easily can someone hack your last.fm account?
How easily can someone then hack your laptop / PC through these, if at all?
Was talking to some girl recently and she went mental out of the sudden, threatened to post my pics to some websites or whatever and post logs of our conversations she found ludicrous (apparently her political opinions are Tumblr enough to guarantee enough trigger for such a reaction). I have pics of her too. We don't have nudes of one another, she has a pic of me in my underwear, something I'm fine with (it's something I'd post in a bodybuilding site, so no stress), but I'd rather not go there.
If she shares the logs of our conversations, shares my personal info (my last.fm account, my Skype account), can someone hack them and consequently hack me and my other shit? Whenever I see Tumblr people "dox" someone they find their phone number, place of residence, etc.
How worried should I be?
hacking? probably not
it's easy to socially engineer your passwords for all websites if you trust someone and have lax security or are just stupid (phishing)
linkedin got hacked by sql injection, but i haven't heard of any database compromises from what you mentioned
Just make your password stupid difficult and change your information contained within those accounts to fake data.
>can someone hack them and consequently hack me and my other shit?
yes
you're in trouble
Does anyone else get the word 'calle' in the captcha all the time?
No.
Use a Web browser retard and you won't have that problem
wait is captcha not case sensitive holy shit
I've wasted so much time
you ever worry about dying in your sleep and having your family go through your hard drive?
>>58204103
thats why I encrypt everything, cant boot my pc without the disk password.
No, do you ever worry that your family will realize you're a faggot?
do you ever worry that when you're dead you won't have to worry anymore?
What is a good, patent-free video codec, ideally with compression? Theora is dead, Daala is unusable, and HEVC not only takes forever to encode, it's also debilitated by patents and royalty fees.
