This is the Giacometti Robotic Arm designed and built by researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology's Suzumori Endo Lab. The surprisingly precise arm stretches 65-feet, has a small camera attached at the end, and can be controlled using the ultra-lightweight artificial muscles connecting each segment. It weighs 2.5-pounds.

Jesus Christ. If we had only thought of or created this earlier, incidents like the Nutty Putty cave death could be avoided... or any situation where a person needs to be removed or saved from an irretrievable position.

It's still only just now being invented so it's still not available. Don't go getting stuck upside down in caves anytime soon.

For reference: Nutty Putty cave, guy slipped into a hole upside down in an irretrievable position, got stuck to the point that pulling him out was impossible.

With an inflatable robotic arm with a camera they would have been able to slip under his body and sort of scoop him out. They might need a heavier arm than the two pounds, but it would work.

That guy died because he put himself in this situation for a thrill and it horribly backfired. Though he did convince me and probably many others to never do such a thing.

I'm looking for HD recommendations on a RAID0 upgrade.

So years ago, right before the flooding in Taiwan, or wherever, before HD prices shoot through the roof, I drove all over town to pick up the last 2TB WD Green HDs at their old price of $59 each.

Ever since my PC has about 90% up time, I've been running 3x 2TB Greens in a RAID0 configuration with zero issues for about 6 years.

I am kinda getting low on space, and a bit worried about the drives being quite old, so I want to upgrade my storage.

Looking at Blackblaze data I found that HGST drives are the most reliable, but they are quire expensive.

I am looking to up my storage to 8TB or more.
What is the best option? 2x 4TB drives, or 4x 2TB drives?
2TB drives seem more reliable than their 4TB counterparts, but the failure rate with more drives in RAID0 doubles.
Hard drive prices never quite went down fast enough after the flooding, to overcome inflation. A 2TB drive right now is around $100. The same WD Green EARX is $105.

What do? wait for prices to drop? Buy a used Green to match mine? I have room for one more HD in the case.
I guess I can spend over $500 and get 12 months financing on Newegg.com, so if my goal is 8TB or more, what are the best drives to get?

Holy shit that's retarded. Do you not care about your data at all?
>>
>>58211245
>Do you not care about your data at all?
You're not the first person to comment on that. No, I dont care about my data. 90% of it are torrents. TV shows, movies, music, etc. I've been a member of private torrent groups for a long time, and I seed everything.

All other important data, pictures, music, and files are kept on 3 separate backups at all times.

I am not worried about data loss. I only care about performance, and low noise. Just this Monday I was backing up the data to 2 USB 3.0 externals simultaneously, and my RAID read speed was at a constant 200mb/s
>>
>>58211205
The failure rate of 4TB drives is higher than 2TB drives, but not by much. The increase in failure chance that you'll see with 4 drives instead of 2 significantly outweighs that in a RAID0, so go with 2x4TB

>>58211367
>200mb/s
This is a very poor sequential read speed for even a single mechanical HDD

Long story short, I got this phone as a present, but fucked up chinese UI won't let me operate properly with widgets (also no rooting is possible yet and let's face it, it will never be). Basically I want to flash a custom ROM on it, probably Cyanogen 13.

Do you know of another smartphone with the same/similar specs so the flashing will result not in bricking?

Hi /g/, I was wondering if my shitty R9 270x 4gb will be able to run shit on a 4k monitor. So far google is not turning up anything and Im basically computer illiterate. Is VRAM the only major factor in determining if a graphics card can run 4k? Sorry if it's a dumb question.

Yes, yes, I see it now. How about just a single file-format that can be ALL THREE?

I have a statement to make, /g/.

I deplore the unbridled temerity of the VLC programmer … he haughtily eschews opportunities to present the correct answer (as Venkat Eswarlu so graciously did here) … and he does that here and in other venues.

Today (in December 2016) I spent valuable time ascertaining the source of and getting rid of this undocumented non-pre-approved nonsense. I checked whether VLC had improperly accessed my net connection to do an unauthorized update. I learned that it had not done that, and then learned that the programmer had lied by omission.

He put in a functionality whereby my machine was directed to do something he wanted it to do that I did not want it to do . Nowhere in his documentation does he disclose that his program set will do that. Nowhere in the install process does he show any concern whatsoever about user preferences regarding the matter.

I will never again trust that programmer to not be nonchalantly self-indulgent and casually dismissive regarding the sovereignty of users over their machines.

A programmer who puts unauthorized non-pre-announced surprises in his code arrogantly violates the trust of the user and so casts programmers into disrepute.

I am grateful to the programmer for his excellent program; however, I am incensed at his high-handed contemptuous imperiousness in presenting an unannounced date-triggered behavioral change surreptitiously.

I am a programmer and I would NEVER deliberately insert a surprise behavior in a program. If its really so irrepressibly cute, give the installer an option to allow or disallow cutesy on-the-fly customizations sneaked in by the programmer. Programs are always inexorable commanders to the machine and so should always be absolutely abject servants to the user who owns the machine.

I still think VLC is the best program set of its kind but I detest the damnable disdain exhibited by the programmer for the authority over their machines of the persons using his programs.

Money isn't magic. The kind of investor they want doesn't have enough money to keep the lights on. Those who do have the money want to keep making it and even if they were welcomed, they wouldn't touch Voat with a 10 foot pole because your average Redditor/Digger/Stumbler/etc. wouldn't either.

On a more recent level, they're also dealing with the fundamental flaw behind voting systems: all "community curating" is really professional manipulation.
