Probably the most sperg idea of our lifetime in tech cycles is that 64bit processors must always run 64bit operating systems. Not only that is retarded, but it makes the system much slower in several cases. This is especially true on processors that could run 64bit instructions barely.

The RAM being no more than 4GB in those systems is not the most important reason, contrary to popular belief. It's just that the system does not run software usually that would take advantage of 64bit instructions in a way that makes the old system run faster. There''s more than that.

The problem is severely exacerbated by the fact the slow hard disks on those old systems struggle to load the extra size of the binaries. In case you haven't noticed, 64bit binaries are much larger than 32bit binaries. e.g. Win 10 32bit iso is 2.9GB vs 3.8GB.

Yeah but there is no Steam for 32 bit Linux OSs.

I did not notice such idea.

At least linux can be made to run with xfce or other retarded minimalist system that reduces the binary sizes significantly. Windows systems that must run for most people (because they have to run windows-only software for their job) get a severe hit in performance in several cases.

I recently had one of the first dual core intels on 64bit run 64bit windows and it has hell to even wait it load. Getting it on 32bit windows 10 made it about twice faster.

The fact they have shit hard disks as well makes it worse. Those binaries are about 50% larger.

Let me tell you about my dream last night /g/.

I was chilling at home when I was visited by an AMD graphics developer who looked like Ron Perlman. He told me AMD is planning to re-release the HD 5xxx series of graphics cards, but with DX12/Vulcan support and sell them for $100 or less.

Was it a vision? What does it mean?

Step 1 - stop shaving / generally caring about your appearance.
Step 2 - Whenever you meet up with people get your laptop out and always go on it, ignore everyone around you
Step 3 - Ensure that you regularly inform people about free software, and that you'd just like to interject for a moment
Step 4 - carry on like this for about 6 to 9 months, and anyone you used to hang out with will stop wanting to be seen with you
Step 5 - Develop a very strong viewpoint on your computing environment, remember any choice that you didn't make was the wrong one. Focus on those particular areas that will make you an expert in everything (vi vs. emacs, LILO vs. GRUB, grep vs. egrep, big endian vs. little endian (or even middle endian), mushroom on pizza vs. no mushroom on pizza)

That should be enough to get you started down the path to greatness

I've never used a trackpoint, how do they work? How precise are they? how different it is from using something like a gamepad analog stick for example?
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
They're good but only for short bursts of movements between typing. Way more precise than a controller stick but not great for fast movements back and forth.

You also have some slight drift which automatically corrects after a few seconds since the system doesn't know. Instead it resets it back based on the movement being the same direction whether short or long.

>>58420107
You place your finger in the middle, apply a bit of pressure and move your finger in the direction you want the cursor to move to.
You can control the velocity with the pressure you apply.
It is a "good enough" controller.
The strength lies in that it doesn't take up much space and you don't have to move your hands away from the keyboard to use it.
It is good enough for everyday use, but I wouldn't use it for something that requires a lot of cursor movement, such as games, drawing and stuff like that.

A very good property of the trackpoint is that you can perform mouse clicks without moving the cursor.

I have the thinkpad keyboard on my desktop as well, having the same keyboard everywhere has proved to be very useful.
On the desktop, I always have access to both a regular mouse and the trackpoint, and I have found that I use the mouse for most things.
>>
I find the clit to be more precise than the trackpad. Not for drawing and such, but for clicking around a UI, navigating menus and selecting text.

Hey /g/. Can someone explain to me why motherboards have fan connectors chaotically placed all over the board?
Can't the manufacturers just have one central fan control unit on the motherboard, and provide an additional mini-board with tons of fan connectors on it which can go anywhere in the case and connect to all the fans, while it is connected to the fan control on the mobo?
I know about fan controllers that come with some cases and 3rd party shit, but why don't mobo brands themselves adopt this and save space on the motherboards by centralizing shit?

>>
>>58419952
>additional mini-board
increased production costs is probably the biggest reason.
>>
>>58419988
I don't think it's that dramatic.
The fan control/connector doesn't exactly need updating once you have established a proper setup thanks to the simplicity of its function.
In the worst case scenario, they can rely on a 3rd party.
They'd also save up on reducing fan connector bloat on the motherboard itself.
>>
>>58419952
Connector near the top for top fan, connector near the rear for rear fan, connector near the front for front fan.

Come on, use the big organ between your ears.
