Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

So /g/ explain to me why hard drives """fail"""?
How do they randomly just stop working, and why do they only last 3-4 years on average?
>>58482687
>3-4 years average.
What's the power supply like where you are?
I still have a Quanum Fireball 3.2gig drive that I bought in September 1997. It's still going.
In my experience, they last a lot longer than that
The last hard drive that failed for me was a 500GB WD ide drive, and that was back when they were still current
Usually stress on the components weakens shit until it breaks. Also sudden jolts can cause the heads to crash.
How is Ryzen supposed to beat the i3 and i5 series? If a Ryzen processor goes for $400 and the newest i5 goes for $250.
>>58482593
from the shitposts i've read here, it's supposed to compete with intels $1000 cpus
i have no idea what the speculation/purposed performance of their low-mid tier chips are supposed to be priced at.
>>58482593
>How is Ryzen supposed to beat the i3 and i5 series?
It's not, it's supposed to at least match them at similar clock frequency yet cost like half as much. The 8-core zen in particular is what most people are eager about matching an i7-5960X yet cost like ~$500.
>>58482633
Is that one being released on February 28th? I've been waiting to build my fucking computer since December.
I'm using a garbage Intel core 2 that keeps overheating and I'm tired of waiting.
I know this is kind of a weird request but y'all know about your audio equipment (or at least pretend to) so show me.
Halp someone pls I need a preamp that has
1. Digital Input (so it can act as a DAC)
2. Volume Control
3. XLR output
And not like $300 or something
I have a Schiit Fulla 2, which I could use, but it doesn't have an SPDIF input. I'd really like to have an all-in-one unit that can output to some powered monitors.
thanks for your help
>>58482561
Good luck finding XLR for $300
I would tell you about the Emotiva pro dac, but it's $500
>>58482641
How's the emotiva XLD-1? I wouldn't mind picking one up used
>>58482693
I remember reading enough mediocre reviews to stay away from it(for me.) I would consider buying any of their other gear tho.

So..? I don't understand what you're trying to communicate..
64 is bigger than 32, do the math.
/g/ could you figure out a way to use windows as a kernal with GNU?
Sure np bro
>>58482503
>kernal
slap yourself in the face. It's a fucking KERNEL goddamnit.
So... GNU tools with NT kernel? Why?
do you have health related issues thanks to staring and sitting at computers during your day job / leisure time?
>legit question
do you have any routine/diet to keep your health in check?
>>58482490
I pretty much starve myself and only drink water and black coffee. If I start to get hungry I'll smoke a cigarette. My vision gets worse every year but I'm skinny.
>>58482490
I've got scoliosis, had a spine fusion in august. Sitting down for long periods of time sucks but it is what it is.
other than that I am Healthy.
>>58482490
Well I'm fat. But that's not because of the computers, that's just from sitting down all the time.
>do you have any routine/diet to keep your health in check?
Nah, fuck that. Who wants to live forever anyways
So I'm at this cafe right now trying to study and connected to the cafe's free wifi. I am quite worried the security and Avast even warned me that I am at risk with this public wifi. I know a VPN would help secure me but I don't know which one to choose. I am looking for a free one and I'm using the Hoxx VPN addon on my browser which works well but Im unsure if its entirely trustable. Any suggestions?
>>58482465
>Avast warned me that I am at risk with this public wifi
lol
>>58482465
Cheapest option is set one up on a home network.
Paid options vary. Look how it will have to connect to your computer. If it needs a custom piece of software in stead of OpenVPN it dosen't deserve your money.
if you want to connect back to your home network, and use it as VPN, go with a Raspberry Pi, cost 25 bucks. You can find load of how-to guides giving you details.
The hardest part is messing at home with port forwarding, firewall, dynamic DNS, etc. it can be a pain.
Slightly easier, is go with a cheap VPS by a hosting company.
its a little linux server you access on line, you set up VPN, google "low end VPS" 128MB is enough
/g/ horror

Has there been any solid alternative to Sansa Clip + in portable mp3 player department recently, or is the branch completely doomed?
I lost mine a month ago, and since the only way to get these bastards is to buy one via refurbished merchandise I started to wonder if there is anything esle to upgrade to
>inb4 get a cellphone, grandpa
I ain't into these faggotish things, son
Get a cellphone, sexually insecure grandpa
>>58482100
>Has there been any solid alternative to Sansa Clip + in portable mp3 player department recently, or is the branch completely doomed?
Nope. Nothing can beat the classic Clip+ in terms of sound quality and pricing. And sadly they retired the Clip+.
Nope. There are $2 chink players that do a pretty decent job until they die a half year in. I'm currently using a Ruizu X02. Bit bigger, but at least you can see some shit on the screen. Great battery life too.
Why are we still not able to block entire countries? I dont want to see anymore anything from these indian subhumans that keep spamming the comment section.
>>58482090
you're going to take this multiculturalism down your anus
and there's nothing yo ucan do about it.
>>58482090
I rather deal with indians than a single australian or especially canadians.
>>58482090
Because the server delivers you the content it received, you're not the one receiving it (and potentially blocking it) directly. The first website to allow users to filter this kind of content per country will be shamed publicly.

>>58481969
don't they have macbooks?
Well looks like I'm retarded and bought a motherboard (Asus Z170e) that needs to be flashed before it'll even work with my new cpu (7600k). Coming from AMD life (so I'm used to stuff not working) but I'm stuck without an older chip. What are the chances somewhere like Best Buy will flash the bios for me with their own older cpu despite not having bought the parts from them?
Chances that they will do it are 0 but you can buy a chip and then return it next or the same day.
>>58481903
>then return it next or the same day.
with a 15% restocking fee!
fucking aids i tell you hwut.
there's probably STILL am3+ motherboards which need an athlong or phenom II to flash before being able to put faildozer/vishera chip in them.
>>58481929
15% of $50 ain't that bad though, might end up just doing this with a g3900 or something
