Anon looking for a solid advice here.
I feel that as a coder I am not as successful as my talents allow for: I don't keep my skills up to date (I'd rather spend my reading time on fiction or history books and shit) and I am not dedicated enough to my work, judging by objective criteria of how much time I spend actually coding daily.
Some people seem to believe that motivation to do this stuff is innate, but I am not buying it; there were times in my life when I was much more involved with coding, I'm self-taught, after all.
What I think matters is surrounding. For one thing, I'm not friends with anyone who is passionate about what they do (it's worth mentioning that I work remotely) and I don't patronize any programming-related communities. Hackernews was great couple years back, now that it has shrunk to its present shitty self, I don't know where to turn to. I know a couple of telegram conferences though.
Do you think I'm on the right track? Any thoughts?
It's something you build for yourself as with all habits.
You will never be a successful as people with legit Asperger's who have the innate interest so it is only masochistic to use them as a yardstick to measure success. So long as you can do your job competently and you don't hate doing it then you're fine.
>>58529706
That's plenty generic answer.
>>58529711
I think most (all) people that I met who are very good at this are not socially awkward at all, it's these people that I measure myself against.
Conversely, people with terrible social skills that I've seen were pretty bad at coding as well (not Richard Stallman material at all).
Please help.
Someone with Debian (I'm using XFCE) and a two-monitor setup, can you show me your xorg.conf file? I can't figure it out.
When I configure it with "nvidia-settings" and save the file and restart the computer it doesn't work. It's driving me a bit insane, it seems like no one online has this problem.
Pic related: my xorg.conf file.
Thank you in advance.

What you're having trouble with isn't Debian GNU/Linux, but some proprietary software from NVIDIA.
We can't help. NVIDIA support might; I wish you luck.
Next time, think about AMD when considering video cards to buy.
In /csg/, we discuss the cheap shit you see on Gearbest, Taobao, AliExpress, Banggood, eBay and similar sites.

Any dinosaur computer experts here?
My old PC has a fairly decent Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz Dual CPU, 512 mb of DIMM DDR 400 RAM clocked at 166 MHz, an ATI Radeon 9200 SE Family edition (or something like that) with 128 mb of VRAM.
Now to my question.
Are there any normal Linux distros that even support this ancient hardware?
Planning to upgrade to 1.5 or 2 GB of RAM since the CPU has absolutely no trouble running XP and ""multitasking"" has been a problem in the last years.
tl;dr: I need a newer graphics card that'll support my Mobo (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/P4i65G/) and a Linux distro that works with my old hardware
And no, I won't buy a new one. It'll be my loonix tinkering computer
Most distros I would assume. Finding a newer graphics card for an old mobo would be harder.

you don't know what "ancient" really means

why do you have flash installed in 2017? do you enjoy malware?
i like flash, it's nice to develop things for.
why do you hate it so much? If you use common sense it's not that big of a problem
Javascript is worse than Flash ever was.

Are there any good techniques or resources available that help to visualise the abstract nature of code? I get that its mostly down to practice, especially as a beginner. But if there are any methods for visualising how exactly a program is interacting with the computer it would help speed the learning process up I think.
I learn best by being able to picture something visually. Reading from textbooks or simply following tutorials sometimes takes me quite a while to grasp a particular programming concept.
>>58529064
Yes, but it's for women, for obvious reasons
https://www.madewithcode.com/
Good luck
It's just a matter of practice OP, kind of like reading sheet music, or any other notation.
Start slow and read it to yourself like a story: "I'm declaring a function called main, which is where my program starts. It returns an integer", etc etc. Sounds goofy, but over time it will become second nature.
Don't use any "visualization" tools since they're a poor crutch that will prevent you from learning to do that visualization yourself, which you have to be able to do if you want to learn how to program.
