Is the new macbook pro 13" without the touch bar meme worth purchasing as a computer science student? I currently have a surface pro 3 but I'm finding in all of my classes this semester I'm using the command line for pretty much everything and as the professors are teaching these classes from a osx/linux perspective, it's a pain in the ass to get everything to work on windows. Literally 95% of the students in my classes already use macbooks but they all are the 2014 models that have the proper ports on them. My concern is that the new versions with thunderbolt 3 will just be a pain in the ass when I need to transfer a file from my desktop, or any other computer in general, to the macbook because I would have to purchase a separate dongle. Also in the curriculum is a class in handheld device programming for iOS which essentially requires osx use and I would basically have to make the purchase at that point, but I am just wanting to get through all this shit right now.

I bought the nonTB MBP. its godly and the best computer I've ever owned. screen is amazing and the build quality is like no other computer. I def recommended it for CS. i'm a CS sophomore at Dartmouth and 95% of people have some form of a MB or MBP.
>>58548667
>should i buy a MBP
No, unless your parents are paying for it.
>>58548667
Yeah, you're going to want a normal laptop that gives you the freedom to install linux or a mac. You can just buy a cheap $300 laptop and it will meet all your CS needs. I'm using a thinkpad yoga 14". It's basically just a laptop but it has the ability to act like a tablet with the touchscreen. I just use it as a laptop though and dual boot. The laptop also supports uefi and legacy bios.

How is /g/ liking the new malwarebytes? It now replaces your antivirus.
Common Sense 2017 still seems like a better choice to bh.
these trial versions of Mcaffe and stuff are shit. I can't believe they are allowed to run without actually working and don't set off the notifications that you have no antivirus if the trial expired.

if you need AV, get kaspersky. everything else is a joke and gives you a false sense of protection.
you're better off with no AV because at least then you'll be extra careful about what you download and run.

Just learnt Vim this morning and it's great!
I was just wondering how you guys do these certain things:
1. Select multiple lines and increase/decrease indent, and edit? See gif
I know I have to use v but how can I get multiple cursors?
2. How can you edit tab length?
3. Can I set shortcuts that will compile and run the current file within a new terminal window?
4. I want to place a ";" at the end automatically after I press "{". I am using delimiter plugin. Wat do?
5. Any plugins that remembers variable name so I can call them from pressing tab?

If it only took you a morning I'd spend the afternoon learning emacs. Emacs is better than Vim IMHO
>>58548299
Vimtutor is only 7 lessons, takes less than an hour though. But I have heard Emacs is terribly hard

Buy brand spanking new SAMSHIT "Smart" TV
>go to plug in my headphones
>no headphone jack
Im still baffled on how is this acceptable, even on a phone i think its pathetic but i can understand it for the saving space argument but a TV? really?
Who in their right mind would plug in their headphones to a TV?
I mean speakers I can understand but for headphones I see it very ridiculous.
>>58548023
Are you a special needs child? How close do you sit next to your tv that headphones can reach it? I hate these trumptards invading other boards.
>>58548091
are you actually retarded or is this a serious question?
Hello /g/
What things you bought that will serve your needs for a long time and you will never regret that you bought that thing ?
replacing stuff after 1 year is shit. Nothing is more satisfying as buying a keyboard that will last for 10 years or a router that will last nearly forever.
Spend money ONCE !
What is allowed:
>Memes
>Small things like Key-puller.
>Specific brands
i cant forbid you anything, everything is allowed
I have this thing..54mbps.
I also have a fiber optic line.
What is a good wireless router that can take advantage of fiber and is budget priced?

Nvidia gtx 660, 120fps in dota, cs and wow
Everything is bought day one and still no problems 3 to 4 years later.

Trying to learn programming
How the fuck is anyone supposed to understand this horseshit
You might want to pass on c++ as a beginner. Try to pick up a scripting language.
>not learning c before c++

Technical reading is difficult until you learn to associate the symbols presented (in this case abstract syntax) with concepts. It will come eventually. Just break it down and read it out loud substituting words when needed.
Many people will act like they never struggled a day in their life reading code or documentation, but it's something every programmer goes through at some point. Persistence is key.

Is it even worth it to write OpenGL code anymore or should I just switch to DirectX? Vulkan has too little documentation and is generally shitty.
It's generally pointless to do anything on your own anymore. 99% of big things are created by conglomerates and you can only be a small cog in them whatever you do, OpenGL or Direct3D or whatever new APIs AMD or NVIDIA promote. The 1% that will happen by individuals is not even worth aiming for.
If you have any self respect you write opengl

Arch Linux or Gentoo? I want to try GNU/Linux.
PCLinuxOS
Neither of those are a fully free distribution. However, Parabola GNU/Linux-libre, which is recognized by the FSF as being 100% free, is based off of Arch.
If you're just starting out, however, you should pick Trisquel instead.
Gnu+linux you mean?
