Should I finally upgrade from the i5 2500k? I am a """content creator""" so I play a lot of games but also render a lot of footage. However, upgrading to i7 6700k and a new mobo will cost at least $500.
>>58592257
well gee I don't know. Is the increase in speed worth $500 to you?
Make your own decisions for once in your life you fucking millennial
Get a 7700k it's faster than 6700k when the 6700k is oc'd to the same frequency and it will take ayymd 12 years to beat it.

>metric fuck ton of CPU's about to be released in Q'1

are you retarded?
I've scratched up my TV screen pretty badly.
Anyone know of a scratch remover that actually works well?

New tv.

I'd rather not really. It's only a small scratch.

So I am looking to overclock my CPU
I have the Gigabyte UDR3 mobo in OP picture with a i7 975 running a stock 980x cooler
Stock CPU speed is 3.33GHz, my goal for now is to hit stable 3.60GHz speeds.
Is that something I can do on a stock cooler?
So what do I do exactly. So far the only consistent information I found was:
-Leave CPU clock ratio as is
-Raise the Base Clock Frequency to desired number
-Set the Uncore ratio to half of the QPI on Auto
-Keep RAM stock, or downclock
-No info on voltage increase
Is that it? Do I just play around with these numbers until I can run stable?
>>58592357
Get a cheap replacement cooler like a Gammaax 400 that's compatible both with your antique shit and modern 1151 boards. Then when you upgrade you can keep the cooler.
You will almost certainly need a cooler if you're hitting 55+ at idle.
>>58592357
I have had a 24/7 overclocked i7 920 since I got it in 2009 and all I did was change the bus speed and memory dividers to keep the RAM near its rated frequency.
These CPUs run hot though and you will probably need a better HSF to overclock, especially if you need to raise the cpu voltage to get it stable.
Do you think Trump is going to stick to his word on net neutrality?
>>58592114
Trump says whatever he thinks the audience in front of him wants to hear and barely campaigned on specific promises at all. I don't think he has a word to keep.
It's not like USA ever had net neutrality, so you don't know what you are missing out
>>58592230
I'm not American (I live in the UK)
Hi /g/uys! Firewall thread. What do you think about firewall? Is it true that if you have a good firewall you don't really need an antivirus? Post your firewall rules. How can I make best firewall? I use iptables and I like it but I'd like to fully understand and know everything about firewall in general.
>block incoming connections
>????
>PROFIT!
just tried ufw on last vps i setup instead of the usual iptables setup tutorial
mfw might not need to manually setup iptables ever again

>enable ufw
>got kicked out because incoming connections are blocked by default
>had to contact support telling them I've locked myself out of my own vps

>For the first time in its ten-year history, the annual Pwn2Own hacking competition is taking direct aim at Linux. Pwn2Own in the past has typically focused mostly on web browsers, running on Windows and macOS. There is a $15,000 reward for security researchers that are able to get a local user kernel exploit on Ubuntu 16.10. The bigger prize though is a massive $200,000 award for exploiting Apache Web Server running on Ubuntu.

Wow, pretty intesting to see what will come of this.

good, they'll find bugs and the resulting patches for them will make Linux more secure

Does /g/ enjoy working in Tech? Every time I pass by our IT guys or wander through the tech offices most people either look kinda burned out or sad to be there
No. I worked in IT for 5 years and it was a complete fucking waste of time. I made $30k/yr in IT and I make closer to $50k/yr delivering fucking pizza because of tips

I have been programming in C++ for a couple of years now. What are some good books for a somewhat experienced programmer to improve their C++ specific skill and knowledge?
>>58591914
What programming language is that? Doesn't look like C to me.
>>58591914
I got recently hired as c++ dev and every senior(like 20 years of experience guys) i met so far there tells me to read Alexandrescu modern cpp.
I havent done this yet, so cant tell by myself, but these guys are more reliable than me anyway.

Is it true that it's harder to install Linux on Kaby Lake machines?
How can i make a Kali USB that can be used in any PC to boot Kali?
Are HDD caddies worth a try?
Yes.
Source: I have one.
>>58591646
if you make an ssd your main drive, and put use a caddy for a storage drive (2tb or something) its definitely worth it
Definitely, I picked one up for my T420 and it was the best decision I could've made.

Potential Linux switchers welcome. Ask questions, get answers, etc.
Why making /bsd/ threads ? It's away empty and it ends with license wars.
Don't you know that BSD users are too busy making good shit ?
We're not archfag shitposting about a nice colorscheme for flat wm.
If you want to install a BSD OS, go read FAQ and mans, we're too busy right now. Sorry.
If I use Linux and most likely won't potentially switch, am I still welcome?
Do you fund that using irc.rizon.net for your discussions lends an air of illegitimacy to your shitty threads?
>>58591415
You're welcome as long as you're going to have reasonable discussions and be open minded for criticism. No need to argue in any way, shape or form. They're just operating systems, and we're trying to make them better.
