Let's try something different, can we get a HWiNFO thread?
Okay, but I don't see how this is supposed to be different.

I guess it's a change of pace?
Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.
Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.
Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.https://pcpartpicker.com

>OUTDATED CPU RECOMMENDATIONS (no mention of Kaby Lake)
>Subsitute a G4560 with 2400MHz RAM for the i3-6100 in any build; same performance, half the price.
>Consider substituting an i5 7500 for the i3 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any i3 or locked i5 build without a Z mobo
>Consider a B150/B250 or H110 mobo for any i3 build
>Add a 240GB SSD to the "Great" tier build

Old Thread >>58709037
Kaby Lake has been released! Skylake is depreciated if corresponding chips are similarly priced (e.g., i5 7600K vs i5 6600K)!
>Some motherboards will have a one-click, 5GHz on air OC button that works for 80% of i5 7600Ks
>100 series chipsets (Z170, B150, ect) don't work out of the box with Kaby Lake
>Z series chipsets have an "Enhanced Turbo", which allows all cores to run at the highest single core boost clockspeed (works for Skylake CPUs as well)
>Pentiums now have hyperthreading, and are thus the new default budget / entry level gaming CPUs
>Pentium G4560 is the best price / perf four thread CPU on a modern platform
>All Kaby Lake CPUs work natively with 2400MHz DDR4 memory
>Do not underestimate the impact of fast (>2400, e.g, 3000MHz) RAM in conjunction with a Z series chipset, which often provides as much of a performance boost as a CPU overclock
>To install Win7 on a Kaby Lake system, use a board with a 100 series chipset that has been flashed with the Kaby Lake update. All the normal caveats for 100 series / Skylake Win7 installation apply.
>have 7.5 year old monitor and 3.5 year old monitor
>7.5 year old monitor croaks 2 days after 3.5 year old monitor starts acting up for the 4th time
Thankfully the 3.5 one always manages to fix itself after a few days, but damn I was starting to think the old Gateway 1680x1050 was gonna last forever. Poor thing.

Do you know any USB devices that don't work with Linux?
all of them
I used to have something for this
Maybe an iPhone or PS Vita
>>58729758
I'd be incredibly surprised if there were any recent USB devices that won't work with linux unless it's some obscure shit.
Let's keep up the Emacs kitchen sink technolo/g/y here. Feel free to share melpa packages and init.el configs.
Previous thread: >>58710956
Lately I've been experimenting with a non-modal configuration, since I've always used one in the past. I'll give it some more time, but I'm not sure that I'll stick with it.
>>58721004
Its just terminus
>>58729697
Can you post your init.el? I want to see how quelpa and use-package work together to get packages from GitHub.
Two questions:
Does anyone know how to remove the shading on emacs-mode-line to make it look flatter like these?
And why the fuck does nlinum shit on my performance? How can I profile framerates? Even my i7 can't do anything for Emacs at the point where nlinum is destroying my redraw calls.
So I was looking into protecting my data, and one thing I thought up was to just mirror everything using 2 internal HDDs in RAID1. While doing some research on this method, turns out everyone says it's a bad idea.
But, I'm not worried about having my computer stolen, viruses(I'm not a braindead monkey) or tornadoes.
Is it worth backing up manually on cumbersome and expensive external equipment or should I just go with RAID1? My only concern is keeping data safe from HDD malfunction.
why would you have to back up manually? do it automatically. get an old computer out of a dumpster and rsync to it every week. that's where your raid1 belongs, on the server.
RAID storage is fine as long as you still follow the 3-2-1 rule for backups.
>>58729623
If you care about your backups you would want to have 2 separate, unpowered backups going on different brands of external HDs.
I have 3x 4TB external drives that hold my valuables. 2 different brands, WD, and Seagate, 2 identical copies, and a 3rd old copy that I cycle in when I'm sure its good to clear.
RAID1 is nice for storage and shit, but bad for backups. Power goes out, or some encryption virus, or other damage and you are fucked.
I wanna make a point to my sysadmin.
LOIC or XOIC?
Which one will make him shit his pants?
Grow the fuck up, child.

Is rx480 worth its price? Or should i get a 1060 for $100 extra?
Im pretty bad on budget
>>58729404
Going with nvidia right now is literally like shooting yourself in the foot.
Either get the rx 480 right now or wait until nvidia released volta and pray it won't be a complete farce like pascal has been.
>>58729404
the 480 is the superior card, where in the world does a 1060 cost $100 more for the lowest end decent model card?
>>58729404
They literally cost the same.
WHY ARE THESE TINY MOTHERFUCKERS SO GOD DAMNED EXPENSIVE???!
You can literally find 240GB SSDs for around $60.
>>58729258
You ever think....maybe because they're tiny?
Extremely reliable and good write speed. I've been through four micro sd cards in two years. Should have just bought a good one like in the pic in the first place.
>>58729258
show me a 240GB SSD that can fit into a micro SD slot and maybe you'd have an argument there.
Is there a FOSS program out there that behaves like Skype or Discord? If not how hard could it be to create a p2p voice chat system?
>>58729196
You can install tox if you enjoy nonfunctional chat clients.

All of those daily threads that went on over and over a while back sure went to good use!

What Linux would you use as a systems engineer/administrator?
Windows 10 is killing me
>>58728942
Fedora kind of targets itself as being good for that. But really you can use any of the big-name distros. They can all compile shit, they can all use ssh, they can all run VMs.
Pick whatever distro you like best. Preferably a low-maintenance one, if you'll be using it for work.
>>58728967
I read that a lot too, never really understood why though. Is it just the quicker package releases or is there something deeper?
