I'm a lazy person, so when posting on 4chan I generally tend to look up pictures through Google Images to post and then copy the URL into the file select dialog. This downloads the image to the temp files directory, then inserts the file path automatically.

The problem is that the amount of time between clicking "open" and it actually doing all of that varies wildly, and doesn't seem to depend on file size or download speed. Sometimes I'll give it a 2 MB file and it will work instantly. Other times, it can take over two minutes for a 150 KB file, and I'd be better off saving the file and selecting it from the disk.

Is the dialog part of Firefox, or Windows? And why does the time it takes to load a file vary so much?

I'm using linux right now and while there's a few neat things about it, I miss hackintosh. I went in with the impression that it'd be faster, but that only seems to be the case with very lightweight desktops such as XFCE.

Firefox. You can get ad blocking with other browsers using the hosts file, but Firefox is the only way to disable it for some sites and run anti-adblock killer scripts.

Bad GNU/Linux experiances time! (I use GNU/Linux as my only OS, but we all have bad times)

>Want to use FDE with LUKS

>Breaks everything, literally everything. Ioctl can't find my wifi card to raise it.

Installed Devuan instead.

Because it doesn't use bridges and uses Adblock which regular Tor Browser does not.

oh my, I already knew it had package problems but that is discouraging

I'll stick with Devuan too, worked just fine for me

I want a new distro that's reliable (since my linux laptop will soon be my only and main work computer at least for a few months)
and won't break down since I wont be able to fix it easily (working overseas, internet spotty)

what's a good option?
I'm leaning towards some Ubuntu variant because of stability
preferably a non botnet
leaning towards Manjaro or Antergos but I'm wary about the stability of anything arch based.

also I'm dum and a scrub

Arch. Used it for years with testing repositories enabled and never had a problem that wasn't easily fixed. In case you can't find a solution online it's as easy as installing a previous version from the package cache.

I have an old machine I got for free, pentium 4 etc, and it's got XP on it, password locked though.

I haven't installed XP on a machine in ten years and can't find any of my old win xp pro corporate CD's from forever ago. This machine will not boot from USB which means I've gotta burn this shit to a CD-R.

What's the /g/ way to get XP on such a machine? Is there an official windows XP 'last and final updated edition' from M$?

Should I just use whatever modern version of NERO burning rom is out there?

I've got a week off work and I'd like to party like it's 2003 all over again.

there are ways to break the password.

Do you need Windows? I'd honestly just use a Linux distro with LXDE or Xfce.

I don't think there is any official Windows ISO with all of the updates. Just one with Service Pack 3 already installed.

for all intents and purposes, yes, and i want xp. not interested in putting linux on this machine.

Now that Microsoft Open Sourced to the MIT Licence the entirety of the core of .NET what is the next move?

Prediction: Windows Itself released to the MIT Licence in 2018 possibly in its entirety along with all APIs.

Result: Endless forks from incompetent freeturds that prove Microsoft is better at maintaining it.

Though if I ever get off my ass and get the perl script working I've written an Ncurses interface to launch and stream youtube videos straight to MPV so I don't have to browse that script ridden website.

Does /g/ use any backup software? I'm kind of wondering if it's even worth the trouble installing something to do such a simple task, but it would be nice for certain directories to be automatically copied to a separate drive. Is there any free/open source backup software that I can check out that any of you may recommend?
24 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>58817442
Nope just BD-R discs to backup the most important stuff.
>>
I use Pogoplug backup to keep certain folders backed up to my old NAS box that I got for peanuts.

A few people I know like Dropbox; don't know if it provides that kind of automation. It is one of the closest things you can get to a consumer off site backup.
>>
>>58817465
I've considered that, but I don't yet have a BD-RW drive. I've tried backing stuff up onto DVDs in the past but they barely hold anything and it gets so unorganized.
